I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer —I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician —but all that came to an end after 9/11. I live in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, I was addicted.
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only be playing golf otherwise

Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal especially if you are 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
“The top winners have exhibited boundless curiosity,” Maya Ajmera president and CEO of Society for Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors. and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shaya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal (热的) imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype(原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the programming, “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through.” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
23. What can we learn about Shanya from the first two paragraphs
A. She gained a lot of money in the award. B. She showed a curious nature as a schooler.
C. She set a big stage for young people her age. D. She was junior to other winners in performance.
24. What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system
A. Her desire to win the science award. B. Her experience of a destructive fire.
C. Her interest in computer programming. D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
25. What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention
A. It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.
B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
26. Which of the following can best describe Shanya
A. Reliable. B. Cooperative. C. Innovative. D. Generous.
D
Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. The project, supported by Facebook, hopes to help people who, because of medical conditions, are unable to communicate with others.
Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired (语言障碍) people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation. People find these things upsetting to use. This new way uses brain signals to change a person’s thoughts into text. When we want to speak, the brain sends signals to make the lips, jaw and tongue move in the right way to make an understandable sound. By discovering these brain signals, the new software is able to predict what a person want to say quickly enough to hold a conversation.
The brain-reading software was tested on three volunteers who could all speak like healthy people. They were being treated for epilepsy (癫痫). As part of their treatment for epilepsy, each patient had electrodes(电极) placed on to their brain. Edward Chang, whole d the study, used these electrodes to record the signals in the patients’ brains while they listened to a list of questions and answered them.
Chang and his team then built a computer program that learned to match the patients’ brain signals to the words the patients heard and the words the patients spoke. For the questions, the software matched the correct words 76%of the time. For the answers, it matched the correct words 61%of the time.
Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back. Chang said, “We as scientists should try our best to help people to bring that most important and basic human ability back.”
27. What is the disadvantage of previous technologies
A. They couldn’t read people’s minds correctly.
B. They couldn’t make communication understandable.
C. They couldn’t serve the purpose of natural conversation.
D. They couldn’t let medical conditions change for the better.
28. How does the software help people
A. By changing people’s mind into text. B. By sending signals to their lips.
C. By organizing conversations for them. D. By training them how to speak.
29. What can we know about the mind-reading software according to the last paragraph
A. It has been used on a wide scale.
B. It has restored the basic human ability.
C. It still has plenty of room for improvement.
D. It has enhanced human real-time conversation.
30. What is the attitude of the author towards the mind-reading software
A. Favorable. B. Objective.
C. Intolerant. D. Doubtful.

Are you interested in attracting good luck and experiencing more success in your life In this article, we’ll show you how to use positive thinking to create your opportunities and attract good fortune.

Work hard. Sow the seeds of luck with labor. If you’re working twice as hard at work, your work will be twice as good, and you’ll tend to feel twice as lucky for having it done. ____35____ For example, don’t worry about everything you’ve got to do for the rest of the week on Monday and just think about this moment.

What makes us happy
You probably know the type of personality in some people: they seem to be hopeful in almost everything. Are they simply born happy Is it the product of their environment Or does it come from their life decisions
If you are familiar with genetics research, you will have guessed that it is a ____61____ of all three. A 2018 study of 1516 Norwegian twins suggests that around 30% of the differences in people’s life satisfaction is ____62____. Much of this seems to be related to personality traits.
To put this in context, the heritability of IQ is thought to be around 80%, so ____63____ factors clearly play a role in our happiness. These include our physical health, the size and strength of our social network, job opportunities and income. It seems that the absolute value of our salary matters less than whether we feel richer than those around us, which may explain why the level of ____64____ predicts happiness better than GDP.
Interestingly, many important life ____65____ have only a little influence on our happiness. Consider marriage. A 2019 study found that, on average, life satisfaction does rise after the wedding, but the feeling of happiness tends to ____66____ over middle age.
Parenthood is even more complex. For decades, social scientists have found that people with children at home are significantly less happy than those without. More recent research, however, suggests that there are important regional differences.
Analyses show that these differences can be almost completely explained by variations in ____67____ parental leave, flexible working hours, affordable childcare and holiday leave, which together ____68____ the potential for work-family conflict. The effects of these policies may play out across generations. In addition to the legacy of their genes, parents’ own emotional well-being will influence the family vigour, which will, in turn, shape the ____69____ of their children.
Our life satisfaction, then, is shaped by our genes, health, economic prospects, relationships and the culture around us. While many of these things may be beyond your control, there is now good evidence that certain psychological strategies will help you to ____70____ to your circumstances in the happiest way possible.

The Price of a Dream
I grew up poor in a family with little money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, they could still afford a dream.
My dream was sports. By the time I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything that moved on the football field. I was also lucky: My high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who taught me the difference between sticking to a dream and just showing determination. One particular incident with Coach Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket — cash for hanging out with friends, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect of a summer job was appealing, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing. I was fearing this, but I had to.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was as mad as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your playing days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment in me.
“How much are you going to make at this job, kid ” he demanded. “Three twenty-five an hour,” I replied. “Well,” he asked, “is $3.25 an hour the price of a dream ”

B
19. What made the writer take up comedy
A. She wanted to overcome her fears B. She wanted to brighten others’ lives
C. She was unwilling to quit performing D. She wanted to work out a routine
20. Why does the writer mention young men with beards in Paragraph 3
A. To show the challenge she was facing B. To explain her attraction to the job
C. To illustrate her special advantage D. To describe her new friends in comedy
21. How has the writer made progress since her first performance
A. She now performs before larger audiences
B. She no longer feels nervous before performances
C. She remains on the stage for a longer time
D. She has learned to make a joke of her age
22. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with
A. Age is just a number B. Old age brings greater wisdom
C. Old age means a chance to sit back D. Being elderly means you have to slow down
【答案】19. B 20. A 21. D 22. A

Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if you are 12 years old.
“Shanya saw a problem went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera.

A. Favorable. B. Objective.
C. Intolerant. D. Doubtful.
【答案】27. C 28. A 29. C 30. B

Are you interested in attracting good luck and experiencing more success in your life In this article, we’ll show you how to use positive thinking to create your opportunities and attract good fortune.
Define luck for yourself. Your desires serve as the roots of “luck”. One person might feel most lucky in passing an exam while another person in scoring her first hole. ____31____ If you feel unlucky, maybe it is because you have not identified what you want to be doing.
Be bold. The “unlucky” are often experts in making themselves comfortable and safe, but achieve little. ____32____ It takes courage to accept failure as a short-lived misfortune. Instead of wasting time avoiding tough situations, they would come up with reasons to act.
See challenges as opportunities to succeed. You’ve just been offered an exciting but strikingly new responsibility at work Take it with passion. You’ve been asked to speak in front of a huge crowd of people Write a great speech. ____33____
____34____ Unlucky people owe luck to accident, applying it as a chance to make excuses. Lucky people, however, build it into more good fortune. The only difference between the lucky and the unlucky, as reported, was that the former kept an eye out for luck, and the unlucky — given the exact same advantage — missed it.
Work hard. Sow the seeds of luck with labor. If you’re working twice as hard at work, your work will be twice as good, and you’ll tend to feel twice as lucky for having it done. ____35____ For example, don’t worry about everything you’ve got to do for the rest of the week on Monday and just think about this moment.
A. Take advantage of good fortune.
B. Don’t make excuses to deal with bad luck.
C. Feeling lucky is to recognize your deep desires.
D. They are not brave enough to concentrate on regular actions.

F. Try to focus on doing one thing at a time and doing it extremely well.
G. But people who feel lucky put themselves in situations where they may fail.
【答案】31. C 32. G 33. E 34. A 35. F
【解析】
【导语】本文为一篇说明文。文章向读者展示如何用积极的思维来创造机会,吸引好运,最终获取更多的成功。
【31题详解】
上文“Your desires serve as the roots of ‘luck’. One person might feel most lucky in passing an exam while another person in scoring her first hole. (你的愿望是‘运气’的根源。一个人可能觉得通过考试是最幸运的,而另一个人可能是在高尔夫球的第一洞得分时觉得自己最幸运)”可知,能达成自己内心的愿望的时候,就觉得自己是幸运的,与C项“Feeling lucky is to recognize your deep desires. (感觉幸运就是认识到自己内心深处的渴望。)”语意相同,且desire为复现词;而下文“If you feel unlucky, maybe it is because you have not identified what you want to be doing. (如果你感到不幸运,也许是因为你还没有确定你想要做什么。)”中what you want to be doing意同上文的desire,下文解释了人们自觉运气不佳时,是因为自己还没确定自己的愿望,可见C项与下文为对比关系,C项符合语境。故选C项。
【32题详解】
本段的主题句为“Be bold. (大胆一点)”,上文“The ‘unlucky’ are often experts in making themselves comfortable and safe, but achieve little. (“不幸的人”往往是使自己舒适和安全的专家,但却收效甚微)”可知,“不幸的人”一直在舒适区内,所以成就很少,而G项“But people who feel lucky put themselves in situations where they may fail. (但那些感到幸运的人却把自己置于可能失败的境地。)”可知,G项与上文为转折关系,那些觉得幸运的人大胆的走出舒适区,即使会遭遇失败也不怕,下文“It takes courage to accept failure as a short-lived misfortune. Instead of wasting time avoiding tough situations, they would come up with reasons to act. (接受失败是短暂的不幸,是需要勇气的。他们会想出行动的理由,而不是浪费时间来避免困难的情况。)”,下文中提及“failure”,为复现词,G项在此处起了承上启下的作用,故选G项。
【33题详解】
本段的主题句为“See challenges as opportunities to succeed.(视挑战为成功的机会。)”,opportunities为关键词;上文“You’ve just been offered an exciting but strikingly new responsibility at work Take it with passion. You’ve been asked to speak in front of a huge crowd of people Write a great speech. (你刚刚在工作中被赋予了一项令人兴奋但又引人注目的新职责?充满激情地接受它。你被要求在一大群人面前讲话?写一篇精彩的演讲稿。)”可知,此处以“被赋予新职责”和“在公开场合演讲”为例,诠释本段主题句中的challenges;E项“Treat terrifying moments as chances, not as hopeless difficulties. (把可怕的时刻当作机会,而不是毫无希望的困难。)”可知,当你接受那些“挑战(challenges)”的时候,会觉得那就是“可怕的时刻(terrifying moments)”,但是应把它们是为“机会(chances)”,chances与主题句的opportunities同义,E项顺接上文,呼应了主题句,E项符合语境。故选E项。
【34题详解】
此处考查本段的主题句。根据下文“Unlucky people owe luck to accident, applying it as a chance to make excuses. Lucky people, however, build it into more good fortune. The only difference between the lucky and the unlucky, as reported, was that the former kept an eye out for luck, and the unlucky—given the exact same advantage—missed it. 故选A项。
【35题详解】
本段主题句为“Work hard. (努力工作) ”,下文“For example, don’t worry about everything you’ve got to do for the rest of the week on Monday and just think about this moment. (例如,不要在周一就担心这周剩下的时间你要做的所有事情,只考虑这一刻。)”可知,此处为举例说明如何工作,不管本周有多少活,只专注手头正在做的工作;F项“Try to focus on doing one thing at a time and doing it extremely well. (试着一次专注做一件事,并且把它做得非常好。)”可知,下文顺接F项,F项符合语境。故选F项。

六、书面表达(满分25分)
71. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】 That question struck me like a flash of lightning. I stood there, staring at my furious coach and noticing that the light in his eyes suddenly went out. Regret and shame overwhelmed me and I wished I had not told him the stupid idea. At that moment, I decided not to give up my sports dream and dedicated myself to regular training. That whole summer, I kept catching and pitching the ball on the court, participating in every baseball game. At the end of the summer season came the long-awaited award ceremony. Finally, Coach Jarvis announced that I was elected as the best baseball player.
I went on the stage to collect the prize for the best baseball player. My legs were trembling and my head was dizzy. Standing in the center of the stage, I heard the crowd was cheering and I saw Coach Jarvis was smiling. He passed the microphone to me and invited me to say a few words. “My fellows! Never give up your dream!” I exclaimed with tears shining in my eyes. “Devotion and persistence will help you realize your dream!” I added, grabbing my trophy tightly. Coach Jarvis came close to me, throwing his arms around me. “Thank you! It is you who let me understand the value of a dream.” I murmured by his ears, my eyes overflowed with tears.
