When a woman bought a painting that appeared to bear the signature(签名) of N. C. Wyeth at a store in 2017, she joked that the 4-dollar item might actually be a real work by the Maine painter. Her joke was no laughing matter, and the painting is now estimated to fetch as much as $250,000 at auction(拍卖会) in September.
According to experts at Bonhams Skinner auction house, the seller unknowingly bought the work at a Savers store in Manchester, New Hampshire, while searching for frames to reuse. At that time, the Wyeth painting had been put against a wall along with mostly damaged posters and prints.
The woman took the piece home, and then made a quick Internet search but could not find any information about the work. After hanging the painting in her bedroom for several years, she eventually stored it in her study.
She rediscovered the painting this past May while doing cleaning, and this time posted images of the work on an online page titled "Things Found in Walls", which is devoted to "stories of things you have found in walls, dug up in your backyard, or in that spare house across the street from your grandma's", according to the group's description.
Comments on the post led her to contact Lauren Lewis, a former curator who worked with paintings by three generations of the Wyeths: N. C. Wyeth, his son Andrew Wyeth and his grandson Jamie Wyeth. So she did.
"After seeing the piece in person, Lewis was 99% certain it was authentic instead of a copy," she told The Boston Globe. "While it certainly had some small scratches(划痕), it was in remarkable condition considering none of us had any idea of its journey over the last 80 years."
Wyeth often produced cover art for publishers of periodicals and novels. The painting up for sale in September is one of four he completed for a 1939 edition of Helen Hunt Jackson's book Ramona, originally published in 1884. In it, Wyeth painted the young title character facing her elderly mother.
24. What was the woman's joke
A. The storekeep er was lazy and foolish.
B. The painting she bought might be valuable.
C. The signature of N. C. Wyeth was wrong.
D. The Maine painter would appear at auction.

A. She put it in her study. B. She sold it to Lauren Lewis.
C. She sent it to her friend. D. She searched online about it.
26. What does the underlined word "authentic" in paragraph 6 mean
A. Real. B. Damaged. C. Famous. D. Stolen.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. A world-famous artist in the US. B. A novel by Helen Hunt Jackson.
C. A painting getting its recognition. D. An expert going on a treasure hunt.
C
Retired Army Col. Farrell Patrick taught computer science at West Point during the 1970s and then at two private universities through the 1990s, so he isn't surprised by the progress technology has made over the decades. But when the 91-year-old got his first virtual reality(VR) experience recently, he was amazed.
Sitting in a conference room at John Knox Village, Patrick sat up straight as his eyes and ears experienced what it would be like to be in a Navy fighter j et flying off the Florida coast. John Knox Village was one of 17 senior communities around the country that participated in a recently published Stanford University study.
During the study, the seniors picked from seven-minute virtual experiences such as riding in a tank, watching stage performances, playing with dogs and cats or visiting places like Paris or Egypt. The participants wore headsets that gave them 360-degree views and sounds, making it seem like they had been all but dropped into the actual experience.
The study, working with the company Mynd Immersive, found that almost 80% of the seniors reported having a more positive attitude after their VR session and almost 60% said they felt less isolated socially. The enjoyment lessened somewhat for older respondents whose sight and hearing had deteriorated(恶化). Those who found VR less enjoyable were also more likely to dislike technology in general.
The company has worked on the biggest complaints the seniors in the study had about VR—the headsets were too heavy and the heat they generated made the seniors' foreheads sweat. The new headsets weigh about six ounces(189 grams) instead of a pound(454 grams). Besides, they have a built-in fan for cooling, and the videos aren't as jumpy.
Patrick says he hopes to live to 100 because he believes the next five years will see momentous changes in VR. Still a technology enthusiast, he believes the cost of systems will drop dramatically and become part of everyday living, even for seniors.
28. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To lead in the topic. B. To reach a conclusion.
C. To present an argument. D. To make a definition.
29. Why does the author mention "Paris or Egypt" in paragraph 3
A. To illustrate the two cities' support for VR.
B. To explain why seniors are crazy about traveling.
C. To compare the differences between the two cities.
D. To show the VR experiences the seniors can choose from.
30. What did the study find
A. Most seniors enjoyed VR.
B. Old people preferred socializing.
C. Seniors' sight and hearing became worse.
D. Most retired people disliked high-tech products.
31. What do the figures in paragraph 5 indicate about Mynd Immersive
A. Its products hardly appeal to seniors.
B. Its goal is to produce high-quality videos.
C. It has made improvements on the headsets.
D. It has got a lot of complaints from teenagers.
D
The heavy use of fossil fuels over the last 150 years has released massive amounts of greenhouse gases, which have caused Earth to warm up. Just planting trees and protecting forests won't solve the problem. When the plants and trees die, the carbon they've stored gets released again. That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture(捕获)(DAC).
A company called Heirloom has just opened the first DAC plant in the United States. Heirloom's process uses limestones, a kind of common rocks, to capture carbon dioxide(CO ). The company heats up the limestones to separate out the CO , which are then locked away in concrete. Heirloom uses renewable electricity to produce the heat, so the process doesn't produce more CO .
The process is extremely expensive, but many large polluting companies are paying Heirloom to share the credit for removing CO . The new plant can remove 1,000 tons of CO a year. That's a tiny amount compared to how much carbon needs to be removed from the atmosphere. But the company says it hopes to remove a billion tons per year by 2035.
Graphyte is another US company working on DAC. The company claims its carbon capture method is very cheap, mainly because Graphyte lets plants do the work of capturing CO . The company collects unwanted plants and wood products and dries them completely so they can't break down. Graphyte says its process doesn't use much energy and can work anywhere. The plant and tree material the process uses would release carbon if it weren't treated.
Not everyone is excited about carbon removal. Some people worry that focusing on removing carbon could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say even if people stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow, the climate crisis wouldn't go away. There are still many greenhouse gases, like CO , in our atmosphere. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air.
32. What can be learned from paragraph 2
A. How CO is captured. B. What Heirloom's history is.
C. Where CO should be released. D. Why Heirloom is established.
33. What is the large polluting companies' attitude to Heirloom
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Unconcerned. D. Supportive.
34. What advantage does Graphyte have over Heirloom in terms of capturing CO
A. It uses fewer limestones. B. It is less expensive.
C. It mainly depends on green energy. D. It builds the DAC plant earlier.
35. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. It is enough to plant more trees and plants in forests.
B. It is essential to capture carbon dioxide from the air.
C. People should focus their attention on climate adaption.
D. It is impractical to pull carbon out of the air at present.

Silk, which 56 (feel) very soft to the touch, has been present throughout Chinese history. Like almost all types of art on the vast land of China, the styles and qualities of silk are also diverse. Hangluo satin from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, is famous 57 its light and soft quality, while Yunjin brocade from Nanjing, Jiangsu province, a luxurious cloth often 58 (use) for royal clothes, represents China's silk weaving(编织)technique at that time.
Yunjin brocade is best made by hand in a complex procedure 59 comprises more than a hundred steps. Even the most skilled workers can only weave a few centimeters a day. Time, 60 (patient) and skills all play crucial roles in its heavenly beauty.
In the Western Han Dynasty(206 BC-AD 24), with diplomat and explorer Zhang Qian 61 (open) up the routes to the western regions, silk graced countries in Central Asia, later expanding its reach to other parts of Eurasia and beyond. Fittingly, its name marked China's major international trade routes, the ancient Silk Road and Maritime Silk Road.
In 62 hands of Chinese artists, the thinnest threads(线) can weave pictures of endless possibilities, 63 the softest material can travel through thousands of years. 第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My friend invited me to a trapeze(高空秋千) class. I was doubtful because of a lack of courage and a short of self-confidence, but her enthusiasm and assurances of strict safety rules won me over.
I had been fearful of heights since elementary school and avoiding my fear of heights became second nature. But here I was, at age twenty-six, facing my fear of heights in a rather extreme way. I had come around to the idea of trying trapeze. I figured it wasn't much different from swinging on the monkey bars as a kid. One difficulty I didn't expect was the ladder(梯子). In order to reach the trapeze, I had to climb up a twenty-two-foot ladder.
I could hear one of my classmates expressing her impatience with my slow climb up the ladder. "If she's afraid of heights, why did she sign up for a trapeze class " However, my friend was at the top of the ladder, trying to encourage me. Besides, his distraction techniques helped to take my mind off my dangerous task. I found a rhythm and kept going. With a slow and steady pace, I made it to the top. The cheers from my classmates rang out below.
An instructor told me to step to the edge of the platform. He reminded me of the safety rules, including the net below that would catch me at the bottom. He also asked me to listen to the directions while in the air, so I could perform a trick.
As the instructor counted down, I took a deep breath and pushed off the platform, swinging back and forth. At that moment, I lost awareness of time and space. Fortunately, the instructor's voice came over the loudspeaker, giving me step-by -step instructions for performing a trick. Instead of doubting my inability to perform the trick, I took his directions one step at a time.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
During my flight on the trapeze, my fear didn't completely leave me.________________________________

(Text 10)
M: Good afternoon! My name's Carl and I work for one of the major companies in the High Street. I've been with them for about 13 years. People often ask me why I decided to do this job. As a young man, I love d traveling and worked for a while as a salesman in Spain. When I came back to stay within the travel industry, my experience of working in tourist centres abroad helped me to get this job. I have to admit that one of the main reasons I wanted to be a travel agent was that we get cheap flights and holidays. It's a great advantage! Basically I'm a salesperson. I advise people on the holiday choices available to them. You know, different destinations, types of holiday, ways to get there, and so on. When a customer has decided what he wants, I book it for them and make any other arrangements they may need, such as car hi re or tours. My duty doesn't end there, though. If my customers are flying, I need to tell them what time they have to check in, and make sure they know what time they will be arriving. I also give information on likely weather conditions and anything else I think will be useful for them.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Frank,
I am Li Hua. I am writing to invite you to serve as a judge for the English drama contest.
As planned, the con test will be held in the school lecture hall at eight o'clock next Saturday morning. It aims to stimulate students' interest in English culture and popularize English drama. At the scene, several dramas, including "The Little Mermaid", "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Romeo and Juliet", will be performed by the students. Finally, the event will end with the presentation of awards.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
During my flight on the trapeze, my fear didn't completely leave me. My palms were clammy, my heart was racing, and my mouth was dry. But I turned down the dial of my fear so I could be present in the experience. I focused my thoughts on the instructor's voice instead of my internal dialogue about what could go wrong. In the end, I successfully completed the task. I couldn't believe I had actually done it!
This experience opened up a new way of seeing myself and approaching other challenges. I became more capable of overcoming my fear and learned to believe in myself. I became more open to try new things. After my trapeze flight, I took an archery class, went on my first kayaking trip, and hiked along a 200-foot cliff in Nova Scotia. While these experiences made my heart pound, I completed them, one step at a time. Whether my steps were small or big, on the ground or in midair, I wanted to keep stepping out of my comfort zone.
