Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That's when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.
I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.
Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where What Nigeria I had no idea. But I was about to find out.
After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, food, and hearts as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me.
Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.
24. Why did the writer enter for the Lighthouse Project

C. Raising money for his students.
D. Inviting locals to enter his Project.
27. Which can be the best title of the text
A. A Life-changing Voluntary Experience
B. The Memorable and Rewarding life in Abuja
C. Lighthouse Project—The Promise of African Education
D. Lighthouse Project—a Volunteer Organization for New Graduates

Drought is an increasing problem in our warming world. All continents have been experiencing more extended periods without rain, leading to forest fires and poor crop growth. Consequently, people are looking at cloud seeding to solve the problem—a method of encouraging precipitation(降水) by sending small particles of certain chemicals into clouds.
Cloud-seeding expert Arlen Huggins has been studying its effectiveness. "My earliest experience was to use cloud seeding to reduce the amount of hail (冰雹) in northeast Colorado. We didn't have any luck with that, but we had success later on in increasing snowfall in Utah. Now, the focus is shifting towards increasing rainfall from summer clouds, which is far more unpredictable." said he.
The problem is that it's pretty hard to know whether precipitation resulted directly from cloud seeding. It might have rained or snowed anyway. Even if you practice cloud seeding in one place and don't in another, it's impossible to know for sure what caused the precipitation. "As cloud seeding is expensive and its effectiveness uncertain, its usefulness is still a matter of opinion," says Katja Friedrich, a researcher of University of Colorado.
Additionally, it's not during foggy and snowy conditions that people think of increasing the chance of rainfall. When a country is hit by drought, then cloud seeding isn't an option due to the lack of clouds. During drought, skies tend to be clear with few clouds. The best option to prevent drought is to seed at times of the year when rainfall levels are normal or higher.
There are also environmental issues regarding the impact of cloud seeding. At high levels, the chemicals sent into the clouds can harm humans and other animals, and some studies have found them slightly poisonous. Apart from that, some environmentalists are concerned about the long-term impacts, as there isn't data on how much those chemicals accumulate in the environment over 10 years.
28. What is the purpose of cloud seeding
A. To increase grain output.
B. To slow down global warming.
C. To reduce chemicals in the air.
D. To deal with dry and rain-free weather.
29. How is Arlen Huggins' earliest experience in Paragraph 2
A. It's effective. B. It's unsuccessful.
C. It's satisfying. D. It's fruitful.
30. What is Katja Friedrich's attitude towards cloud seeding
A. Favourable. B. Opposed.
C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
31. What can be inferred from the text
A. Drought currently poses the only t hreat to forests and crops.
B. Rainmaking in any weather will come true in the near future.
C. Researchers now can not tell if rainfall is brought by cloud seeding.
D. Chemicals sent into the clouds will become less poisonous over time.
D
What does it mean to be intelligent If it's defined by having the biggest brain, then sperm whales(抹香鲸)—whose brain is 20 pounds—would be the brightest creatures on Earth. But, more likely, it's how a brain is wired. Viewed in this way, intelligence is what gives an organism the best chance to survive in an environment. Language may be one of the best ways to demonstrate that kind of smarts.
"Language allowing humans to be a more advanced species is a hypothesis that somebody came up with one day without really trying to prove it," says Erich Jarvis, a professor who studies the neuro-biology of vocal learning. "The idea stuck around, but so have other common beliefs that are not really supported with evidence," he points out.
To get a better grasp of vocal learning and cognition, the study authors turned to songbirds. The team performed seven cognitive experiments on 214 songbirds from 23 different species. Of these, 21 species were caught from the wild. The rest two studied are domesticated(家养的). The behavioral tests examined the birds' problem solving, for instance, figuring out how to remove an object to access the food reward. The researchers also tested two other skills often associated with intelligence: learning by association, plus what's called reversal (倒转的) learning, in which an animal adjusts its behavior to get a reward. They then looked at whether being vocal learners helped develop the three skills, comparing 21 bird species to two others which were non-vocal learners.
Jarvis' new study provides some of the first evidence that vocal learning—one of the crucial components for a spoken language—is associated with problem solving. Vocal learning bird species could come up with innovative ideas, such as getting seeds, or catching a worm trapped under a cup by removing the obstacle or pulling it apart. All three abilities—problem solving, associative learning, and reversal learning—are typically considered "components of intelligence," he says.
"One question left unanswered is why there's such a strong relationship between problem-solving abilities and vocal learning. The brain areas in charge of vocal learning are not the same ones that get activated when we need to troubleshoot(分析解决) an issue," says Michael Goldstein, a professor of psychology at Cornell University who studies vocal learning in songbirds and humans but was not involved in the study.
32. Which can probably define intelligence according to Paragraph 1
A. Language. B. Brain size.
C. Brain structure. D. Environment.
33. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Guarantee. B. Assumption.
C. Category. D. Distribution.
34. What are Paragraphs 3&4 mainly about
A. Habits of songbirds.
B. Methods of domesticating songbirds.
C. Outline of the study.
D. Three phases of displaying intelligence.
35. What may the text talk about next
A. The mechanism that bridges all the brain regions.
B. The functions of the brain areas that can troubleshoot issues.
C. The reasons why songbirds' intelligence can not deveplp further.
D. The reasons why vocal learning influence problem-solving abilities.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分 12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Reading is an exercise for the mind. It is good for our vocabulary and literacy skills, teaching us math or science concepts and helping us learn history. Apart from those, reading has another benefit. Have you read a story and felt tears well up because of a character's suffering If so, that is because you have empathy(共情) for the character. 36
Research shows that human brains react differently to stories and facts. 37 In addition, your brain thinks you are in the story, which means you experience the characters' thoughts as if they were real.
38 This skill, called emotional intelligence (EI), can make it easier to communicate and connect with people. Research shows that building this intelligence can lead to greater tolerance. One study found that people who read the Harry Potter novels, which tell stories about humans fighting against the evil, were less likely to behave unfairly towards powerless groups including refugees(难民).
This theory of EI has been put into practice in schools. After reading The Boy at the Back of the Class, a story about a boy who is a refugee escaping from the war, students in St Michael's High School were inspired to do a 10-mile walk for the non-profit organization—Refugee Action. 39
40 Not only are we more likely to engage in helpful behaviors when we feel empathy for other people, but others are also more likely to help us when they experience empathy. For society to develop, communicative and empathetic individuals really matter.
A. In a way, all this increases our ability to read well.
B. This permits people to limit their emotions that others are feeling.
C. Many more areas of your brain light up when you're enjoying a story.
D. It also stimulated them to raise 1,000 for the homeless caused by war.
E. Reading encourages us to empathize with others, which could be beneficial.
F. Empathy helps you to read people's emotions and work out the best way to respond.
G. It helps you see into other people's hearts and can be learned through various stories.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
July 1971, I was taking a summer class in Black-American literature on the campus of SUNY Oneonta in northern New York. Professor James walked into the classroom and announced that he had invited a special guest to class, but his guest was delayed. The class stirred with curiosity and anticipation.
"Who's coming " someone asked.
"All I will tell you is that he is the author of one of the books you have read for this class," he said. "I need a volunteer to meet him in the hall of the administration building and take him here."
To my amazement, my right hand shot up as though it had a mind of its own. "What am I doing " I thought. I never volunteered for anything. I was shy and uncomfortable meeting new people. In fact, I was absolutely the wrong person for this job. Realizing my mistake, I pulled my hand down quickly, but it was too late.
"Thank you, David," Professor James said. "You'd better leave now. He'll be arriving any minute."
Seeing no way to back out, I reluctantly got out of my seat and headed for the classroom door. When I reached it, I stopped.
"Umm," I said. "If I don't know who this person is, how will I recognize him I'd hate to bring back the wrong guy."
Professor James laughed. "Good point," he said. He pulled me aside and whispered a name in my ear. "Alex Haley," he said.
"Really " I said. I gave a thumbs-up to the class and left the room.
As I entered the empty hallway, I criticized myself for volunteering. "Why didn't you let someone else do this " Alex Haley was the author of The Autobiography(自传) of Malcolm X. He was also famous for his diligence, perseverance and in-depth thinking.
As I walked across the campus, my anxiety grew. I feared that I was about to embarrass myself in front of this famous gentleman by asking stupid questions, or worse, accompanying him in painful silence. I reached the front steps and climbed them slowly.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150 左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

W: OK, so our topic for the presentation is bees. How many main point s do we have
M: Three.
W: There's a lot of information, but we only have eight minutes.
M: I think we can organize the whole presentation around our three main points.
W: Should we start by showing that bees are an important natural resource They help plants reproduce. Without bees, a lot of crops would be more expensive to grow.
M: Let's make that clear so people understand why we all need bees.
W: Now, I found a report that says a lot of bees are dying right now. The report has a lot of statistics about population numbers. Should we use that
M: Well, I'm worried those statistics might be confusing. Mr. Lee said we have to make our presentation brief and to the point, and that's important for our grades.
W: OK. Maybe we could just put some of the statistics in a diagram.
M: Let's do that. And we could show some photos of bees.
W: Good idea.
M: So for the last part, we could make a list of what people can do to help bees.

Within two years, I published three stories in national children's magazines. Had I not volunteered to meet this extraordinary man, I would never have received the benefit of his wise advice and the rewards that followed.
