A
Long before I could read on my own, my mother often read to me from the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey. My mother’s voice changed my world. And many years after that, the read aloud made me a reader.
All these years later, I was in a classroom reading aloud a picture book to a small boy who was troubled by poverty and loneliness. In that moment, in the joy of the read aloud, this boy had an idea that started something big. He said. “Mrs Allyn, let’s make sure everyone knows how good this feels. Let’s have a holiday for the read aloud.”
That led to my creation of World Read Aloud Day six years ago to honor this young boy’s wish for everyone to be able to have a read aloud every day. Since then, World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event reaching over one million people in more than 65 countries around the world, a number that is growing every day.
In the 21st century, the message that every child should have the right to read is urgent. There are 57 million children who are not in school and hundreds of millions more who are in school but are not learning. By age four, children from low-income families read far less than those in high-income families.
And yet, the good news is this: A six-year study of children’s reading habits found that reading aloud to kids every day will put them a year ahead of kids who are not read aloud to daily, no matter what kind of family kids are from.
The message is powerfully clear: Reading al oud to children can close the word gap. Children who grow up as readers become better citizens, and every child should have that right to read. So let’s just pay attention to the right to read until all children can do it. And yes, in this way, we can, we will, change the world together.
11. World Read Aloud Day was set up in order to ________.
A. show the use of read aloud B. sell more story books
C. show respect for a boy’s great wish D. celebrate a worldwide event
12. What can we know about the reading situation in the 21st century
A. Poor children don’t read enough. B. Children have no chance to read.
C. Children cannot read messages. D. Poor children don’t like learning.
13. What should we do according to the six-year study mentioned in the passage
A. Study children’s reading habits early. B. Read aloud to kids until they can read.
C Show children how to be better citizens. D. Give kids the task to change the world.
14. How does the writer prove t ne importance of reading
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By presenting research results. D. By giving reasons.

Antarctica is the most distant part of the world, but it is a center of scientific discovery and environmental change.
Early explorers were attracted there by the secret of Terra Australis. Others sought money from catching whales. Still others wanted to understand Earth’s pole in order to better sail the seas. I am a geologist (地质学家) who studies the timing and extent of past ice ages. I’ve been very lucky to conduct five season of research there under the protection of the Antarctic Treaty (条约), an international agreement that encourages scientific cooperation and environmental protection.
Antarctica is the only continent that was actually discovered, because it has no native human population. British explorer Sir James Cook sailed around the continent in 1772-1775, but saw only some outlying islands (离岛). Cook said that if there were any land, it would be “never to give way to the warmth of the sun.” But Cook also reported that Antarctic waters were rich with wildlife.
Today parts of the West Antarctica Ice Sheet are particularly close to collapse. Recent research show sea level could rise by I meter by 2100 and 15 meters by 2500 if the greenhouse effect continues and the ice sheet experiences a rapid collapse, as it has in the past. Despite the environmental disaster in Antarctica, the continent also shows that nations can cooperate to find solutions. “I believe the Antarctic Treaty System is the world’s most important example of peaceful and scientific international cooperation. Thanks to it, 10% of Earth’s land surface is protected for wildlife.”
Yet in these bad environments, life finds a way to survive—showing that there are solutions to even the most difficult challenges. If Antarctica has taught me anything in 200 years, it’s that we can work together to deal with problems. As Ernest Shackleton once said, “Difficulties are just things to solve, after all.”
15. What is the author’s purpose of going to Antarctica
A. To observe whales in Antarctic waters. B. To unlock the secret of Terra Australis.
C. To conduct his geological research. D. To sign an international agreement.
16. What did Cook want to tell us about Antarctica in paragraph 3
A. It includes some tiny islands. B. It is terribly cold all day long.
C. It provides good places to circumnavigate (环航). D. It is one of the remotest areas of the world.
17. What is the author’s attitude to the Antarctic Treaty System according to paragraph 4
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Shocked. D. Disappointed.
18. What has the author learned from the history of Antarctic exploration
A. Life should be given a purpose. B. It’s time to explore nature.
C. Cooperation matters. D. Science wins all.
C
More than half of the world’s oceans have changed significantly in color over the past 20 years, with human-caused climate change as the likely cause, according to the study published in the journal Nature. Oceans around the equator (赤道), in particular, have become greener, a trend that cannot be explained by natural, year-to-year variability alone, reflecting changes in their ecosystems.
The ocean’s color changes based on what’s found in its upper layers. Bluer oceans tend to have little life, while greener oceans have more phytoplankton Phytoplankton are the base of the ocean food web. In a balanced ecosystem, they serve as fuel for zooplankton and fish, which are eaten by larger fish, seabirds and marine mammals.
However, the change in color has indicated a change in the ecosystem. While some areas are likely to have less phytoplankton, others will have more. These kinds of shifts could have ripple effects throughout the entire ocean ecosystem.
To determine whether this trend was related to climate change, researchers compared two ocean-color models which simulated (模拟) how the oceans would respond under two conditions: one with added greenhouse gases and one without. The results predicted in the greenhouse gas model aligned (一致) almost exactly with what the researchers found from real-world data --within 20 years, about half of the oceans significantly shifted in color.
Dutkiewicz said she was not surprised at this finding. "But still I found the results very sobering; yet another wake-up call that human-caused climate change has significantly impacted the earth system," she said. "All changes are causing an imbalance in natural ecosystems. Such imbalances will only get worse over time if our oceans keep heating," she added.
19. What does the new study mainly show
A. The color of the oceans varies with the seasons.
B. Oceans are turning greener due to climate change.
C. Ocean ecosystems have become more and more fragile (脆弱的).
D. Human activities are the main cause of climate change.
20. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Greener oceans are more beneficial to fish than blue ones.
B. Phytoplankton play a significant role in ocean ecosystems.
C. The number of phytoplankton is in decline in most oceans.
D. Phytoplankton are vital for fighting against climate change.
21. How did researchers conduct their experiment
A. By exploring the waters covered by phytoplankton.
B. By referring to previous data about greenhouse gases.
C. By analyzing the source of greenhouse gas emissions.
D. By comparing ocean-color models in different conditions.
22. Why does the author mention Dutkiewicz in the last paragraph
A. To offer solutions to ocean heating.
B. To show the changes in natural ecosystems.
C. To stress the urgency of dealing with climate change.
D. To state the importance of the ocean to human beings.
23 → 24 → 25 → 26 → 27
A. Based on people’s grammar scores and information about their learning of English, the researchers developed models that predicted how long it takes to become fluent in a language and the best age to start learning.
B To find the answer, the research team turned to the Internet, to collect data on a person’s current age, language ability and time studying English.
C. The older you get the more difficult it is to learn to speak English like a British. But no one knows exactly at what age it becomes harder, to learn a new language.
D. They concluded that the ability to learn a new language is strongest until the age of 18. This is not to say that we cannot learn a new language if we are over 18, but most of us will not be able to master grammar like a native speaker.
E. They also created a short online grammar quiz that tested noun-verb agreement, pronouns, prepositions, and relative clauses, etc.
Sometimes we just can’t avoid a discussion turning into an argument. If you do start arguing with someone, it is important to keep things under control and there are ways to do this.
The most important thing: don’t raise your voice. That will just make the other person lose their temp er too. 28 Say “I’m sorry” and continue to talk calmly and quietly, and then your partner will be more ready to think about what you are saying.
29 Try to keep to the topic you are talking about. Just concentrate on solving the one problem you are having. For example, if you’re arguing about the housework, don’t start talking about mobile phone bills as well.
And my final tip is that, if necessary, you can call “Time out”, like in a sports match. If an argument is getting out of control, you can say to the other person, “listen, I’d rather talk about this tomorrow when we’ve both calmed down”. You can-then continue the discussion the next day when perhaps both of you are feeling less tense and angry. 30 . Also, you may find the problem much easier to solve when you’ve both had a good night’s sleep.
I want to say one last important thing. 31 This is not true. Conflict is a normal part of life, and dealing with it is an important part of any relationship. If you don’t learn to argue properly, then when a real problem comes along, you won’t be prepared to face it together. Think of the smaller arguments as training. Learn how to argue cleanly and fairly. 32
A. It is also very important to stick to the point.
B. Some people think that arguing is always bad.
C. You may believe that arguing is impossible to avoid.
D. The second thing is that you should find a good topic.
E It will help your relationship become stronger and last longer.
F. You are more likely to reach an agreement when you are both calm.
Q. if you find yourself doing this, stop for a moment and take a deep breath

How to Survive a Fire
In recent years, fire accidents have become a great concern in our country. Many fires have broken out in residential areas, factories, and public spaces leading to significant loss of life and property. It is crucial to enhance our awareness of fire safety and equip ourselves with essential self-rescue measures to effectively cope with such emergencies.
During a fire, quick thinking and immediate action make a difference between life and death. Firstly, it’s important to stay calm and call the fire department immediately to report the fire. If possible, escape through fire escape exits and use stair s instead of elevators. If trapped, seal off doors with wet towels to keep smoke out. Remember to cover your nose and mouth with wet cloth while crawling low beneath smoke to avoid breathing in poisonous gases.
It is our collective responsibility to prioritize the fire safety. Regular inspections, practicing fire drills, and ensuring the availability of functional fire extinguishers can make a significant difference. Only with joint efforts can we build a safer and safer community.
