A rooster(公鸡)is shown washing a mahjong tile(麻将牌)with the Chinese
character “Fa”. This work was created by Zhang Mingxiang, 26, also known on social
media as “Wo Shi Chao Ren CR”. It reminds people of the popular Chinese phrase
“gongxifacai”, through a clever use of homophony(谐音).
Zhang skillfully mixes traditional Chinese painting skills with the use of
homophony. His creativity has got him over 1 million followers on Bilibili. Different
from other artworks, he often creates and shares paintings and videos in a humorous
way. His unique style is deeply loved.
However, Zhang had a long journey to find his inspiration. “I grew up with
picture books,” Zhang said. “ The more I read, the more I want to draw by myself.”
Without any professional training, he used to draw by himself in the classroom
during his middle school years. The inspiration to focus on cute animals hit him in 2018 after he saw people selling
Chinese calligraphy(书法) on Douyin. “The black and white seemed a bit boring to me, ” Zhang said. “I
remembered the cartoon books I read as a child. Suddenly, images of cute animals came to mind, and that’s when I
found my inspiration.”
Once, he was trying to draw a Chinese story about Wu Song fighting a tiger. Then an idea hit him: Why not
draw five squirrel(s 松鼠), which could be referred to as “wu song” Since then, he has begun to use homophony in
his wordplay.
Now, Zhang also creates different kinds of cultural products showing his artwork including T-shirts. He hopes
that his style will go abroad and win the hearts of people around the world one day.
24. What do we know about Zhang Mingxiang
A. He is 25 years old.

Many scientists once believed that physical similarities between identical twins(同卵双胞胎) are genetic.
However, their personalities, intelligence, and other differences are an effect of their environment. But scientists are
now discovering that the boundaries(界限) between genetics and environment are not so clear after all.
Identical twins Jim Springer and Jim Lewis were raised by different couples. When the two Jims finally met at
age 39, they discovered they had a lot in common. Both were 182cm tall and weighed 82kg. They had the same
smile and the same voice. When psychologist(心理学家)Thomas Bouchard Jr. invited the Jim twins to his lab, his
coworkers found it very hard to tell them apart.
But the similarities didn’t stop at the physical. They both had dogs named Toy. They both married women
named Linda. They both enjoyed making things with wood and suffered headaches. They had so much in common
that it seemed unlikely these were just coincidences(巧合).
The Jim twins were just one of 137 sets of separated twins Bouchard and his team tested. They compared the
twins’ IQ scores and reached a surprising conclusion-- intelligence was mostly connected to genetics rather than to
training or education. It seemed the differences in family and environment had little effect.
However, genes can’t control everything, argues Danielle Reed, who also studies twins. Reed’s research shows
that, though nothing can truly change our DNA, environmental differences that a child experiences can sometimes
affect the way the DNA behaves. This can make even identical twins completely different.
28. In the past, scientists believed similar personalities between twins are mostly related to_________.
A. genetics B. environment C. DNA
29. What can we learn about the Jim twins
A. They are similar in many ways.
B. They grew up together.
C. It’s easy to tell them apart.
30. Who does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The Jim twins. B. Sets of twins. C. Bouchard and his team.
31. Which of the following statements is NOT true
A. Bouchard gave the Jim twins an IQ test.
B. Both Bouchard and Danielle Reed agreed that intelligence was mostly connected to genetics.
C. Danielle Reed’s research shows that environmental factors can make a difference to the way DNAworks.

Pace Melody from France has lived in China for 13 years. As the daughter-in-law of a family from Hunan,
Melody often visits her husband’s hometown in Yiyang, Hunan. It was there that she fell in love with the Chinese
countryside for its friendly villagers, local foods, and beautiful scenery.
With sweet air and fresh vegetables, the rural life in Hunan brought Melody a deep sense of comfort and
happiness. She is thankful to be welcomed by her Hunan family members, who are very close to her. “My
mother-in-law often tells me that I am like her daughter,” she said.
This love and acceptance touched her, as it was quite different from the customs in France. In her home
country, it was common to address one’s mother-in-law by name, but in Hunan, she was encouraged to call her
mother-in-law “mom”.
Working in the fields with her mother-in-law became one of Melody’s favorite activities. Her mother-in-law
took her to dig wild vegetables and taught her how to make tofu. Melody also learned Chinese square dancing from
her mother-in-law and they celebrated Spring Festival together.
Melody is amazed by how quickly the villages in China are developing. Before, there were no highways near
their village, but now there are good roads and buses that come regularly. The southern part of Dongping town has
changed a lot. It used to be a remote(偏远的)and mountainous area, but now it’s a busy place with lots of people.
Life in Hunan has given Melody rich experiences. “I have many surprises and learn a lot every day. I am very
happy and grateful(感恩的),” she said.

A rooster(公鸡)is shown washing a mahjong tile(麻将牌)with the Chinese character “Fa”. This work was created by Zhang Mingxiang, 26, also known on social media as “Wo Shi Chao Ren CR”. It reminds people of the popular Chinese phrase “gongxifacai”, through a clever use of homophony(谐音).
Zhang skillfully mixes traditional Chinese painting skills with the use of homophony. His creativity has got him over 1 million followers on Bilibili. Different from other artworks, he often creates and shares paintings and videos in a humorous way. His unique style is deeply loved.
However, Zhang had a long journey to find his inspiration. “I grew up with picture books,” Zhang said. “ The more I read, the more I want to draw by myself.”
Without any professional training, he used to draw by himself in the classroom during his middle school years. The inspiration to focus on cute animals hit him in 2018 after he saw people selling Chinese calligraphy(书法)on Douyin. “The black and white seemed a bit boring to me,” Zhang said. “I remembered the cartoon books I read as a child. Suddenly, images of cute animals came to mind, and that’s when I found my inspiration.”
Once, he was trying to draw a Chinese story about Wu Song fighting a tiger. Then an idea hit him: Why not draw five squirrels(松鼠), which could be referred to as “wu song” Since then, he has begun to use homophony in his wordplay.
Now, Zhang also creates different kinds of cultural products showing his artwork including T-shirts. He hopes that his style will go abroad and win the hearts of people around the world one day.
What do we know about Zhang Mingxiang
He is 25 years old.
He is a professional artist.
He has a number of followers on Bilibili.
The underlined word “unique” probably means_________.
独特的 B. 受欢迎的 C. 奇怪的
The fourth paragraph mainly talks about____________.
why Zhang’s paintings are welcomed by young people
how Zhang came up with the idea of drawing animals
what Zhang used to do in his childhood

He hopes more people will like his works.

Many scientists once believed that physical similarities between identical twins(同卵双胞胎) are genetic. However, their personalities, intelligence, and other differences are an effect of their environment. But scientists are now discovering that the boundaries(界限) between genetics and environment are not so clear after all.
Identical twins Jim Springer and Jim Lewis were raised by different couples. When the two Jims finally met at age 39, they discovered they had a lot in common. Both were 182cm tall and weighed 82kg. They had the same smile and the same voice. When psychologist(心理学家)Thomas Bouchard Jr. invited the Jim twins to his lab, his coworkers found it very hard to tell them apart.
But the similarities didn’t stop at the physical. They both had dogs named Toy. They both married women named Linda. They both enjoyed making things with wood and suffered headaches. They had so much in common that it seemed unlikely these were just coincidences(巧合).
The Jim twins were just one of 137 sets of separated twins Bouchard and his team tested. They compared the twins’ IQ scores and reached a surprising conclusion-- intelligence was mostly connected to genetics rather than to training or education. It seemed the differences in family and environment had little effect.
However, genes can’t control everything, argues Danielle Reed, who also studies twins. Reed’s research shows that, though nothing can truly change our DNA, environmental differences that a child experiences can sometimes affect the way the DNA behaves. This can make even identical twins completely different.
In the past, scientists believed similar personalities between twins are mostly related to_________.
genetics B. environment C. DNA
What can we learn about the Jim twins
They are similar in many ways.
They grew up together.
It’s easy to tell them apart.
Who does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 refer to
The Jim twins. B. Sets of twins. C. Bouchard and his team.
Which of the following statements is NOT true
Bouchard gave the Jim twins an IQ test.
Both Bouchard and Danielle Reed agreed that intelligence was mostly connected to genetics.
Danielle Reed’s research shows that environmental factors can make a difference to the way DNA works.

Pace Melody from France has lived in China for 13 years. As the daughter-in-law of a family from Hunan, Melody often visits her husband’s hometown in Yiyang, Hunan. It was there that she fell in love with the Chinese countryside for its friendly villagers, local foods, and beautiful scenery.
With sweet air and fresh vegetables, the rural life in Hunan brought Melody a deep sense of comfort and happiness. She is thankful to be welcomed by her Hunan family members, who are very close to her. “My mother-in-law often tells me that I am like her daughter,” she said.
This love and acceptance touched her, as it was quite different from the customs in France. In her home country, it was common to address one’s mother-in-law by name, but in Hunan, she was encouraged to call her mother-in-law “mom”.
Working in the fields with her mother-in-law became one of Melody’s favorite activities. Her mother-in-law took her to dig wild vegetables and taught her how to make tofu. Melody also learned Chinese square dancing from her mother-in-law and they celebrated Spring Festival together.
Melody is amazed by how quickly the villages in China are developing. Before, there were no highways near their village, but now there are good roads and buses that come regularly. The southern part of Dongping town has changed a lot. It used to be a remote(偏远的)and mountainous area, but now it’s a busy place with lots of people. Life in Hunan has given Melody rich experiences. “I have many surprises and learn a lot every day. I am very happy and grateful(感恩的),” she said.
