Born in Iris Barre l in 1921, Apfel was brought up in Queens, New York. As a daughter of a successful small business owner, she studied art and art history before working as a copywriter for Women’s Wear Daily.
With her husband Carl, Apfel started a textile and fabric (纺织及织物) reproduction business in 1950. Her firm managed White House restoration projects for nine presidents, ranging from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton.
Known for her charming personality and deep devotion to work, Apfel became a late-in-life fashion influence r through her unique style—featuring bushels of bracelets (手镯), piles of necklaces, and those unmistakably large, heavy-framed glasses.
Apfel’s star brightened as she aged. At 90, she was teaching at the University of Texas at Austin. At age 94, she was the subject of a well-reviewed documentary by Albert Maysles. At age 97, she became a professional fashion model, represented by a top agency, IMG. She modeled for Vogue Italia, Kate Spade and M. A. C, and at the time of her death, she held the record for being the oldest person to have a Barbie doll crafted in her likeness by Mattel. That year, her autobiography (自传), Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon, was published in 2018.
In a 2015 NPR story, Apfel told a reporter Ina Jaffe that she took pride in having inspired people over the years. She remembered meeting one woman who claimed that Apfe l had changed her life.
“She said ‘I learned that if I don’t have to dress like everybody else, I do not have to think like everybody else’,” the designer recalled with joy. “And I thought, boy, if I could do that for a few people, I achieved something.”
“She became an inspiration for so many people,” jewelry designer Alexis Bittar said in a statement. “Through living her life on her own terms, it messaged to women that they don’t need to hide in the shadows as they age; they actually can continue to glow and get better at what they do and look like.”
24. What was once Iris Apfel’s job before becoming a fashion influencer
A. An actress. B. A White House worker.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s longest reef, measuring 2,027 km. Running parallel(平行的) to the coast of Queensland, Australia, the reef is home to many species of fish.
The Great Barrier Reef took thousands of years to form, and has existed for thousands of years, but in just a few short decades we humans have made remarkable progress in killing it. The balance of this ecosystem is being destroyed. Poisonous coastal pollution, overfishing and unsustainable tourism all contribute to the damage done. However, the biggest threat of all is climate change, which causes coral bleaching (珊瑚白化) and other problems.
Coral bleaching is a process that causes coral to turn white in color when exposed to certain stressors, such as changes in temperature or light. As water temperatures rise due to climate change, the algae (海藻) living inside coral becomes poisonous and is expelled from the coral, causing it to lose its color and a major source of food. Not only do the algae produce coral’s color, they also provide 90%of the coral’s energy. Thus, without the algae, most corals will die.
Unfortunately, coral bleaching events are now occurring at an alarming rate. Mass coral bleaching events in the Great Barrier Reef have been recorded in 1998, 2002, 2006, 2016, 2017 and 2020, and they are now expected to become an annual occurrence. The Great Barrier Reef is believed to have lost over 50% of its corals since 1995 and as global warming continues, this number will continue to increase rapidly.
In 2015, the Australian government formed a plan for the protection and preservation of the Great Barrier Ree f until 2050. While the plan contains many great aims to improve water quality and restore the reef, there are no measures to deal with the root cause of the issue-climate change.
Solving the most important problem of our generation will require many solutions, such as supporting the use of renewable energy, keeping fossil fuels in the ground, protecting forests, reducing plastic production and preventing unsustainable business practices.
Repairing the damage done to the Great Barrier Reef—and other ecosystems around the world—will be no easy job, but we believe that individuals, businesses and governments will make a change and then there will be hope in the future.
28. What can we know about the Great Barrier Reef
A. It is a lifeless coral reef structure.
B. It has the most preserved ecosystem.
C. It is a threat to the survival of human.
D. It has been affected by various factors.
29. What does the underlined word “expelled” in paragraph 3 probably mean

30. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Coral reefs are experiencing growth.
B. The loss of corals is expected to decrease.
C. Coral bleaching takes place more frequently.
D. The government has taken steps to stop coral bleaching.
31. What is the author’s attitude to the future of the Great Barrier Reef

New research from Barclays Life Skills found that 70% of the British noticed language changes at work over the last five years. Gen Z, people aged 18-24, appears to be leading the change. “Our research shows that the next generation are clearly going to make their mark on the workforce when it comes to how we communicate,” said Kirstie Mackey, head of Barclays Life Skills.
“Yours truly”, “Yours sincerely”, and “To whom it may concern” were the three phrases mostly likely to disappear from the workplace within the next ten years. “Compliments” and “Respects” at the end of an email were the fourth and fifth most likely to go extinct. While these phrases are behind the times in the eyes of the British, “thanks!” and “thanks so much” were found to be increasingly popular, with 46% and 50% of respondents (受访者) saying these were friendly responses.
Other more informal phrases, however, were considered to be more divisive—simply going with the short form for thank you, “ta!” was considered over-familiar by 29% of respondents, but friendly by 23%. And “hiya” was viewed as friendly by 42%, but as over-familiar by 26%.
The survey shows 49% of Gen Z often use immediate messaging platforms at work, but just 27%of those aged over 55 do so. That age group still prefers email, saying this method feels more professional.
Language expert Laura Bailey says the change toward a more informal way goes hand in hand with the appearance of workplace messaging platforms. “The generational differences can be explained by broader changes in what different age groups were familiar with,” Bailey said.
While traditional letter-writing styles translate into any form of written communication for older workers, younger ones have been influenced by changing language styles that spread quickly through social media, Bailey added.
Barclays Life Skills’ Mackey said that given office-proper language was changing, there were a few things to remember. Avoiding over-familiarity with co-workers and making sure your tone(语气) is considered as friendly were two of them, she said. Another important consideration was whether a short message or email would be enough to express what you want to say, and thinking about which choice the email receiver would favor, Mackey suggested.
32. What did the new research find about Gen Z
A. They prefer formal language in the workplace.
B. They show less interest in new style of communication.
C. They place higher importance on direct communication.
D. They drive the changes in communication styles at work.
33. What do the British think of phrases like “Yours sincerely” and “Respects”
A. They’re extinct. B. They’re friendly.
C. They’re over-familiar. D. They’re old-fashioned.
34. What does Bailey say about immediate messaging platforms
A. They may replace emails soon. B. They make office language informal.
C. They are more convenient than emails. D. They are destroying the English language.
35. Which of the following advice may Mackey give to people at the workplace
A. Use formal and proper language.
B. Consider the message receiver’s preference.
C. Keep their distance from senior co-workers.
D. Avoid sending short emails to familiar people.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With the pressure of exams, assignments (作业), college applications, athletics, and social situations, high school students today need to learn how to manage stress more than any generation before. 36
Put self-care first
As high school students, you’re at the age where you’re growing, and your brains are finishing developing, which means you need to get more sleep than you used to. However, sleep is just one part of self-care. 37 Take time out each day to exercise. It will make you happier and help you recharge (休整). You’ll notice better performance, increased focus, and less stress.
Think positively
Instead of losing your mind by assuming the worst, try picturing the best possible outcome. Rather than tell yourself “I can’t do this” or “I don’t have enough time”, repeat over and over in your mind “I can do this” and “I have plenty of time” until you believe it. 38 And you’ll notice yourself getting creative to make things happen.
Manage your time
39 Rather than have an endless to-do list that you’re constantly crossing off, learn the art of time blocking —assigning a certain amount of time to each task. You’ll find that time blocking increases your ability to focus, lowers your stress levels, and gives you something to look forward to rather than feeling like you’re working on the same thing for a whole day.
Lighten up and laugh a little
Even when you do your day-to-day activities, don’t take things too seriously-laugh a little. Laughter can deal with stress as well as exercise can. It’s another healthy escape. 40 For example, you can watch your favorite movies or cartoons, and read some funny books or magazines. Most importantly, you should be able to laugh at yourself even when things don’t go your way.
A. Stay organized and schedule your time wisely.
B. Here are some ideas that can help you deal with high school.
C. There are things you can do to promote a light-hearted nature.
D. The more you believe these thoughts, the true r they will become.
E. Make sure you are paying attention to your overall physical health.
F. Humor is a powerful stress reliever that’s comparable to physical exercise.
G. Apart from physical and mental growth, you’re also dealing with the challenges of high school.

第二节(共10小题,每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Why chopsticks created: The tool for cooking
Taking food with fingers 56 (be) originally a common way of eating for humans, but then East Asia and Western Europe developed different tableware (餐具) to meet social and cultural etiquette (礼节). Why did the Chinese invent and use chopsticks instead of 57 (knife) and forks like the Westerners
The reason is probably related 58 Chinese living habits. 59 (compare) with other regions’ food culture, Chinese food prefers thoroughly cooked vegetables, meat, and grains. In ancient times, there were generally two methods of cooking food: roasting and boiling.
Since China had advanced pottery culture, it was natural that boiling became the traditional and fundamental cooking method. Boiling food in a pottery container required much water, and the cooking process often needed small wood sticks 60 (stir).
Chopsticks’ original name in Chinese is “Zhu”, 61 has the same origin as “boiling”. It suggests that chopsticks are the tool for cooking at very first. Since the Chinese were used to using pottery and 62 (prefer) boiled food, and China had plentiful bamboo and wood, these factors together made up the basic conditions for 63 invention of chopsticks.
The 64 (early) known chopsticks are copper (铜) chopsticks from the late Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 BC). But as bamboo and wooden chopsticks are easy to rot, 65 is believed that the chopsticks existed early.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mrs. Johnson was an elderly woman who loved nothing more than sitting by the window and watching the world go by. She had lived in the same house for over 50 years and knew almost everyone in the neighborhood. She especially liked the teenagers who lived next door, a group of kids who always seemed to be up to something.
One day, Mrs. Johnson noticed that the kids seemed to be going through a tough time. They were skipping school, getting into trouble, and seemed lost and directionless. Mrs. Johnson knew that something needed to be done to help these kids, so she decided to take action.
The first thing she did was to invite the kids over for cookies and drinks. They were hesitant at first, but Mrs. Johnson’s warm smile and kind words quickly put them at ease. Over the course of the afternoon, she listened carefully as the kids shared their hopes and dreams, their fears and frustrations. She didn’t judge them or lecture them, but simply offered a listening ea r and a shoulder to lean on.
As the weeks went by, Mrs. Johnson continued to reach out to the kids. She would invite them over for dinner or take them on outings to the park, the library, or the movies. She would encourage them to talk about their interests and talents, and help them find their passions, set goals, and pursue their dreams. Mrs. Johnson became a guiding light for the neighborhood kids.
One of the kids, a boy named David, was particularly talented in music. He had a natural gift for playing the guitar and writing songs, but had never been given the chance to pursue his passion. Mrs. Johnson knew that David’s genius for music was too great to go unnoticed, so she took it upon herself to help David find a way to share his talent with the world.

小作文:
One possible version:
As students, we often try to find ways to make the best use of our free time. Whether to participate in non-academic extracurricular training is a topic worth exploring.
In my opinion, engaging in non-academic extracurricular training is a favorable choice. It allows us to cultivate our interests and passions. While compulsory school courses are essential, our free time provides an opportunity to pursue activities such as music, sports, and art, which not only add joy to our lives but also foster our creativity and self-confidence.
Therefore, spending our spare time on non-academic extracurricular training can be highly beneficial.
读后续写:
One possible version:
Mrs. Johnson contacted the community center and arranged for David to perform at a show. David was excited but nervous about performing in front of an audience. He had always loved to play the guitar, but he had never done it in public before. Mrs. Johnson encouraged him, helped him write and practice his songs, and even made him a new shirt to wear on stage. On the night of the show, David took the stage and played his heart out, and the audience was blown away by his talent.
After the show, David was full of joy and excitement. He ran to Mrs. Johnson and said, “Thank you for everything you have done, Mrs. Johnson. With your encouragement and help, I have found my purpose in life.” With a big smile on her face, Mrs. Johnson hugged David and said, “You have done all the hard work yourself. All I have done is help you believe in yourself.” She was also happy to realize that one person, no matter how old or how ordinary, could make a difference in the lives of others.
