Iceland lies in the North Atlantic Ocean. It lies between 63°24’ and 66°33’ N and between 13°30’ and 24°2’ W. It is the second largest island in Europe. It is close to the Arctic Circle (北极圈) yet in fact only one of its northerly islands lies inside. The country has a total area of 103,000 square kilometers and a coastline of about 6,600 km. The island is 300 km wide from north to south, and 500 km across from west to east.
From 1262 to 1944 Iceland was ruled first by Norway and then by Denmark. Centuries of foreign rule, and such things as volcanoes (火山) and the weather, made life very difficult at times for the Icelanders, there was lots of hard work and little change. The situation began to improve during the nineteenth century. Then in 1944 Iceland became an independent republic (独立国家); since that time it has become a quite rich country where the people enjoy having cars, modern houses and lots of electrical equipment. If you look at the kind of products that Iceland sells to other countries today—fish, meat, wool and so on—it’s easy to see that both the sea and the land are important to Icelanders. This has been true in fact since the time of the first Icelanders—Vikings from Norway who arrived in AD 874.
Some things in the lives of the Icelanders have hardly changed—the Icelandic language, for example, 700 years ago the stories called Sagas were first written down, these can still be read in the old language without much difficulty by Icelandic speakers today.

You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard (胡须) and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman sits on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote (纸币) was based on him. Sadly, Huang died at the age of 94 on Feb 1, 2023.
Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit (精神) of Lijiang River—being positive and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape (风景) commented Guangming Daily.

For example on the back of the 5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times many emperors would go there and pray (祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuanto 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.

Reading makes a better me
Friends are not books, yet books are friends. I have read different kinds of books. But my favourite one is the English writer Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, which is a famous novel in the world. After reading the book, I learn many things from it. Especially, when we get tired of the life, we should remember that taking measures to face it is better than giving up. Reading good books can teach us a lot of knowledge. It can help us know a new world, and also can make us relaxed in our spare time.
Reading makes a better me and I hope you can find a better you some time in the future.
