This unit includes the basic principles of fashion design, the factors affecting fashion design and the
sources of inspiration. By learning this unit, students can master the professional vocabulary and related expressions about fashion design, style, color, clothing culture and so on. The teaching contents of this unit can make students realize the source of inspiration for fashion design and the formation of design concepts, which can make students have a deeper understanding of fashion design.

Fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics, clothing structure and natural beauty to clothing and accessories. It is influenced by culture, environment and different events, and changes with time and place. Fashion designers design clothes according to the needs of consumers or their own creative wishes.
时装设计是将设计、美学、服装结构和自然美应用于服装和配饰的艺术。它受到文化、环境和不同事件的影响，并且随着时间和地点的变化而变化。时装设计师根据消费者的需求或他们自己的创意愿望来设计服装。

palette: the range of colours that a painter, photographer, film maker, etc. usually uses.
pastel: a colour that is pale and soft.

[1] It may be through trend forecasting provided by a fashion magazine, in which there are several examples of other designers using a focused area of information and inspiration. Interpretations of important colors, fabrics, textures and style details may be highlighted from several designers to show a common idea.
句首it指前文的二手资料；focused area指“流行预测所关注的热点领域”；interpretation原意为“演变；演绎”，这里意为“提炼”；common idea 指“当前普遍的设计趋势理念”。

[3] Some designers, such as Dries Van Noten and Marni, use simple shapes to support their color wizardry in textile and graphics design, others, such as Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein, use a more harmonious palette to pronounce construction and detailing.

[6] The elements that make period garments so suitable to designing for today’s market are the immediacy of the subject matter in material that may be extrapolated—such as color, fabric and silhouette—and how unrelated their context can be to today’s fashion, particularly those periods preceding the twentieth century.
