Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution to two of her country’s problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.
Chip waters drop off their empty bags from Doritos. Lays. and other favorites at two locations in Detroit:a print shop and a clothing store. where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding (衬垫) and liners (衬里) from old coats to line the insides.
It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof lightweight and easy to carry around”. Oleita told the Detroit News.
Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags. Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita — whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life —and her fellow volunteers. “We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,”she says.
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of rescuing bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental problem and poverty often go hand in hand. As Oleita told , “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”
24. What did Oleita ask the snack lovers to do with their empty chip bags
A. To turn them into sleeping bags.
B. To donate them to the homeless directly.

25. What do we know about the sleeping bag made by Chip Bag Project
A.It is convenient. B. It is only made of old coats.
C. It has the function of heating. D.Its size is adjustable.
26. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. The aim of the project is more than social issues.
B. Poverty results from environmental problems.
C. Oleita’s project made 110 sleeping bags per month.
D. Oleita started the project mainly to raise money.
27. Which words can best describe Oleita
A. Hardworking and loyal. B. Talented and brave.
C. Selfless and modest. D. Generous and creative.

You might think people all over the United States have Wi Fi—wireless Internet service—and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the US capital, Washington D. C. Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank, which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It is also home to the largest radio telescope in the world.
There is a ban on Wi Fi in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic (电磁的) waves. Officials say the waves could disturb the signals the telescope receives.
For many Americans a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s. To get there, you must read road signs because there is no GPS service in the town. People can connect with the Internet through telephones, but wireless service is not allowed.
The observatory (天文台) is one of the largest employers in the area. The National Science Foundation (NSF) spends about $8.2 million a year to operate the observatory, telescope and educational center.
Jonah Bauserman is a technician. If he supposes there is a signal that is not allowed in the zone, he drives to the house where the signal is coming from and checks it. But once a week, when the device is cleaned, some banned devices are allowed near it.
People in the town respect the work of the scientists. And they say they are happy to live without Wi Fi and mobile phones. “You know” instead of sitting here with our phones and other devices we’re out fishing, hunting and going to each other’s houses.” Everyone knows each other and communication is almost always face to face.
28. What will you see when you pay a visit to Green Bank
A. Guide signs. B.GPS service. C. Cellphone towers. D. Wi-Fi controlled toys.
29. What is Jonah Bauserman’s duty in his work
A. Following signals from cellphones.
B. Cleaning the telescope once a week.
C. Listening for signals from outer space.
D. Protecting the telescope from being affected.
30. What has the telescope brought to the local people
A. Great wealth. B. A healthier lifestyle.
C. Many job chances. D. Much difficulty in life.
31. What may be the best title for this text
A.A Better Life Without Wireless Devices.
B. Good Relationships Between People in an American Town.
C.The Largest Radio Telescope in the World.
D. An American Town Without Wi Fi and Mobile Phones.

If carbon dioxide(CO2) were a politician, it would be worried about its bad comments. This greenhouse gas is the primary pollutant responsible for global warming. Scientists, leaders, and activists are trying to stop its production. This gas, however, also plays a key role in life on Earth.
Carbon helps form the protein and DNA found in living things. In the atmosphere, it combines with two oxygen atoms (原子) to form carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis (光合作用) . In the process, plants use energy from the sun to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar. In return, plants give off oxygen. As carbon dioxide concentrations increase in the atmosphere, scientists are trying to employ photosynthesis to promote plant growth. Laboratory studies show a higher concentration of the gas is making some plants grow more quickly in certain conditions, but in the wild and on outdoor farms the overall benefit is unclear. In the Netherlands, some commercial greenhouses are experimenting with ways to send carbon dioxide released from industry into greenhouses along a particular way where plants use the extra gas as fertilizer (肥料).
The first person to assume the existence of carbon dioxide was 16th-century Belgian scientist Jan Baptist van Helmont. After coal was burned, he noted, the weight of the remains was lower than the coal’s initial weight, which means some mass had been lost in the process. He was the first scientist to recognize different gases present in the air we breathe. It wasn’t until 1896 that Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius linked the carbon dioxide released from burning coal and oil to atmospheric warming.
Yet, despite its being plentiful in the atmosphere, we have been light on commercially produced carbon dioxide because of rising energy costs. As a result, carbonated drink (碳酸饮料) companies have had to raise prices or reduce production.
32.What can we infer about carbon dioxide from paragraph two
A.It helps form protein and DNA.
B.It plays a necessary role in photosynthesis.
C.It supercharges plant growth in any condition.
D.It makes crops on outdoor farms more productive.
33.Why is Jan Baptist van Helmont mentioned
A.To compare him with the Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius.
B.To show an early discovery of carbon dioxide .
C.To explain the applications of CO2.
D.To tell an unknown story.
34.What problem do carbonated drink companies face
A.It’s difficult to increase their production.
B.Sales of their drinks are extremely poor.
C.Commercial CO2 is in short supply.
D.There’s too much CO2 in the atmosphere.
35.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Climate Change: Affected by CO2.
B.Greenhouse Gas:an Enemy to Nature.
C.CO2: Both an Enemy and Friend.
D.Carbon: Misunderstood Substance.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
Niesha could not forget the way she froze in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today was Niesha’s turn. However, her hands shook so violently that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she did clearly not finish. He also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage ” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha ”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class ” Momma asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-- I was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
注意:(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
(2)续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Dear Peter,
I hope this letter finds you well. It’s my pleasure to contribute to the 3rd anniversary edition of the Students’ Space by sharing a few thoughts on how we can improve the newspaper.
Firstly, I believe the content of the paper could be more diverse. Secondly, I suggest improving the readability of the paper. Lastly, I propose that we increase the frequency of the paper to twice a month.
Thank you for considering my suggestions. I look forward to reading a more diverse, readable, and informative Students’ Space in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She pictured the scene where her mom tried her best to overcome her fears and gathered all her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. And Momma, aware of Neisha’s inner confusion and anxiety, reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a sweet smile, saying she would be with her all the time. Greatly touched and determined to find her courage, Neisha stood in front of the mirror, constantly practicing from pronunciation to tone and even each gesture. “Try harder, and I can make it!” she kept cheering herself up.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Still shy and nervous, she customarily lowered her head to avoid making eye contact with others, numb there for seconds. But shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, straightened her shoulders and then got started, “Dear fellow students, ...” While presenting herself, Niesha glanced at Mr. Roberts smiling at her and listening attentively. A spark of joy flashing across her eyes, she knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.

W: Harry, let's play some ping-pong today.
M: I'd love to play a set or two, but my right arm hurts. I've decided to stop playing ping-pong until it feels better.
W: Well, how about going skating
M: I'd like to, but my knee hurts, too.
W: Harry, stop making excuses! You're just lazy.
M: No, I'm not! You know, there's a basketball match on TV today. Let's just stay home and watch it.
W: OK. You stay, and I'll play with Helen.

W: What do you want to do tonight
M: How about going to the cinema I should be home from work at 5:45. Then we can go out and eat before we see a film.
W: What do you want to see
M: There's a good art film at the Green House Cinema.
W: Let's see…it starts at 6:15. I don't think we can get there in time to see the beginning. How about the action film at the New State Cinema It starts at 6:50. Perhaps the 7:00 one at the UME Cinema is even better. It stars Jackie Chan.
M: OK, that's fine. I like him, too.

M: Hey, Lucy. Do you have some time to talk about next week's trip with me
W: Sure, Dave.
M: OK. So, we're leaving on Monday from Hartsfield International Airport, and returning on Friday. Do we take ourselves to the airport Maybe we need to book a taxi, or just go by bus.
W: No, we don't have to. The company car will pick us up and take us there.
M: Oh, that's good. When
W: Our flight leaves at 11:00 a.m., so they should pick us up between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. Besides, the company pays for our trip, including hotel and food.
M: How much will that be
W: Well, New York is a pretty expensive city. So, each of us will get $200 a day.
M: Oh, OK. Thanks for telling me that.
W: You're welcome.

W: Please sit down. Let's see…you're Mr. Smith. Is that correct
M: Yes. John Smith.
W: And you're interested in this job
M: Yes, I am. I'll graduate from college the coming June. My major is Chinese.
W: I see. Have you ever done any work in this field
M: Yes, I used to be a tour guide for Chinese travellers.
W: Good. Now, how much money do you expect to have for a year
M: From what I've read, it seems that a starting pay would be around $12,000 a year.
W: Here, you would start at $10,500 for the first year…a kind of training period. Then you would go to $15,000.
M: That sounds fair enough. What do you think are the chances for me to get a job here
W: Well, I'm talking to three people today and four tomorrow. We'll be hiring two people. You'll hear from us sometime next month. Good luck! And thanks for coming in today.

M: Well, I'd love to share with you my personal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can't imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can't get around without one because there isn't any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don't have a car, you'd better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that's one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.
