To: All Staff
From: Jackie Mock, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programmer was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwan Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $ 10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr, Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $ 10 per visit.

Lisa was running late. Lisa, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform, Lisa felt weak and tired-maybe it hadn’t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.
Several yards away, Frank, 43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying.
But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling, “Oh, my God, she fell in!” Frank didn’t hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. “No! Not you!” his girlfriend screamed after him.
She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa, he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station.
It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the platform so that bystanders could hold her by the arms and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.
Lisa thought she’d been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn’t, and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.
Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40-minute train ride downtown—just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which made her think about her reaction at the time. “I saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to die,” she explained.
41. What was the most probable cause for Lisa’s weakness
A. She had run a long way. B. She felt hot in the subway.
C. She had done a lot of work. D. She had donated blood the night before.
42. Why did Jennifer try to stop her boyfriend
A. Because they would miss their train.
B. Because he didn’t see the train coming.
C. Because she was sure Lisa was hard to lift.
D. Because she was afraid the train would kill him.
43. How did Frank save Lisa
A. By lifting her to the platform. B. By helping her rise to her feet.
C. By pulling her along the ground. D. By dragging her away from the edge.
44. When did Lisa become conscious again
A. When the train was leaving. B. After she was back on the platform.
C. After the police and fire officials came. D. When a man was cleaning the blood from her head.
45. The passage is intended to ________.
A. warn us of the danger in the subway B. show us how to save people in the subway
C. tell us about a subway rescue D. report a traffic accident

After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to re-create images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US, which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI,功能性磁共振成像).
The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the FMRI data - when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, AI learned how human brains would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry (模糊的) airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to “decipher (解码) the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality.
46. What do we know about Stable Diffusion
A. It can help train people’s minds. B. It can fully present people’s dreams.
C. It was created to draw people’s brains. D. It can produce pictures from people’s thoughts.
47. How did the AI system learn about human brain activities
A. By analyzing descriptions of human thoughts.
B. By studying patterns of blood flow in the brain.
C. By recording brain scans from four participants.
D. By examining 10,000 photos about human brains.
48. How did the AI system improve the quality of the final images
A. By integrating additional brain scans. B. By adjusting various visual elements.
C. By employing a “text-to-image” model. D. By inputting text from human observers.
49. What is the potential use of this technology according to scientists
A. To improve text-to-image models. B. To create more accurate brain scans.
C. To learn how animals view the world. D. To help people interpret their dreams.
50. What makes the best title for the passage
A. The Research on AI System B. The Power of Science Magazine
C, The Forms of Dreams D. The Study for Brain Activities

Many of us are quick to blame others for how we feel: “He makes me so mad!” or “She really hurt my feelings.” But did someone really “make me angry” or are we feeling the anger in us getting kicked up in response to the way someone behaved towards us
The difference between the two is in who the responsible part is for the way we feel. If we blame others for our feelings we will eventually feel reasonable at whatever our retaliation (报复) may be, and we will explain that it was their fault, not ours. “They were driving me mad”.
When we blame others for the way we feel we have in fact given power to others for the state of our emotional well-being. The truth is, no one controls our feelings but us. If we are finding that people in our lives really know how to “push our buttons” then we are not doing a good enough job at protecting our “buttons”. We are the ones leaving our buttons out in the open so that other people can “push them”. Ultimately, the switch for our buttons is inside us—not on the outside.
While there are some things in life that are clearly out of our control, like the weather or a flight that’s two hours late, how we act and respond to other people’s behavior is not among them. Our responses to others are well within our control.
If someone is “making us” so mad, for example, that we get angry, we are not doing enough to learn about what drives our anger and how to properly cope with it. My suggestion is taking time before you get angry, and putting some work into taking an inventory (清单) of the past. An inventory can show you how much of your past experiences influence your feeling reactions in the current moment.
When we finally realize that so much of our present feelings and reactions are driven from within ourselves and our own past experiences, we will be ready to make the changes in our lives that will better secure our buttons so that they are no longer left out in public for everyone to push at will.
51. According to the author, if we blame others, most of us always consider ________.
A. others to be correct B. ourselves to be correct
C. we were driving ourselves mad D. they were driving themselves mad
52. What’s the author’s attitude towards feelings
A. We should blame others for the way we feel.
B. We should enable others to control our feelings.
C. We should let others know our daily life clearly.
D. We should control personal feelings ourselves.
53. What does the underlined phrase “push our buttons” probably mean in Paragraph 3
A. Force us to do a good job. B. Make us angry.
C. Take off our buttons. D. Let us down.
54. Which can always be under our control according to the author
A. The weather conditions. B. The delay of a flight.
C. Other people’s feelings. D. Our own behavior.
55. What does the author’s advice mean in Paragraph 5
A. A burden of one’s choice is not felt. B. A friend is easier lost than found.
C. Think twice before acting. D. A good beginning is half done.

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I still remember the days when I was a youthful student in an engineering school. I lived a casual life, without caring about the future. I smoked, drank with friends and made girlfriends. Little did I realized that casualness would certainly lead to loss.
Two years had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted FAIL in more than half the subjects. I didn’t care, at least not till my dad found out about it. You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expected to finance their own education, my dad financed me.
Then came the day when my dad found out my habit of smoking. He lost his temper but he just told me, “son, your allowance is cut in half from this moment on.” It hit me like a roundhouse kick from Bruce Lee. I was jolted (震摇) out of my bones! I couldn’t comprehend how to pay off the debts that I had accumulated in college. I owed everybody money: the grocery store, the bars, the restaurants, and my friends. I was living a life filled with credit.
When I came back to college, I knew if I didn’t change the way I live my life I wouldn’t be able to pay everybody off. So I decided to make some changes, drastic changes. I quitted smoking, cut off from my friends who led me down the wrong road, starting hanging out in libraries and reading my engineering books.
One year later, I went from a miserable failure to a Cum Laude(优等成绩). Life was never the same again. This incident made me know that anything is possible if you take action and do something about it, however small or large. Even today it still motivates me when I feel that I’m about to lose or give up. It reminds me that I can do it!
