Why We Should Record Travel Moments
On a rainy summer day, I took a train to Switzerland and trekked through the mud to a medieval fortress high atop a cliff. After twisting through its dimly lit corridors, I finally 21 (arrive) at the main viewpoint of Cave of the Fairies: a plunging 77m waterfall that shoots from underground into a sparkling pool. As the waterfall wet my jacket, I closed my eyes and took out my phone 22 (record) the rush of dreamy reality before me.
I had come in search of a sound, not a sight.
Throughout my travels, I’ve found myself 23 (collect) sound recordings the way other people collect souvenirs. Just as some travellers take photos of landscapes or their food, I started doing this as an artistic way to help me remember some of the most interesting details of my trips.
Environmental scientist Lauren Kuehne said, “I think that once you start to listen, once you actually start to listen, you start to appreciate how much 24 (big) the world is.”
This attitude 25 (echo) by Samara Kester, a retired emergency medicine physician who now serves on QPI’s board. “A photograph is two dimensions. 26 you are looking at something you’re seeing, it’s maybe 180 degrees, maybe 270 degrees. Sound is 360 degrees. You hear it all around you.” Kester explained 27 teaching herself to be a better listener has not only expanded her sense of travel, but helped her relive her travels once she’s back home. “You immerse 28 in that place again. You recreate those memories and therefore recreate the feelings you had, 29 are very hard to express clearly. You can re-experience that and that will send you to where you were before.”
Months later back in my L.A.home, I find myself popping on my headphones and listening back to the rush of falling water inside Cave of the Fairies. When I close my eyes, I 30 feel the spray of water against my skin, the sense of letting my ears lead me on a faraway adventure. Mentally, I’m right back there — if only for a moment.

“Dealing with money is a basic life skill”
Why financial transactions are about relationships and why the
quality of the relationship is more important than the transaction itself.
British psychologist, William Bloom, has long argued that society would benefit if money flowed more freely-if, for example, people regularly give part of their salaries or profits to charity.
When you say, “Money should flow more freely,” what do you mean
“There are two metaphors that I like to use for money. One is the energy of the environment and human nature. Money represents a(n) 31 of these energies; it’s a materialized form of energy. The other metaphor is water. If you look at water, it can be still and polluted or, once the dams are opened, it has the ability to 32 itself. Healthy energy flows in the way rich people should allow their money to flow. If they are good, they will know how to give.”
Money still isn’t flowing freely.
A lot of it is dammed up in banks and in the hands of a small percentage of extremely wealthy individuals. “We have to build a society in which we are not threatened by each other. The gap between the rich and the poor 33 social connection and harmony. The Baby Boomers (婴儿潮一代) are too comfortable for too long. Now they have to ask themselves what their politics are, because life is political. This is the time for all of us to 34 politically.”
How can we deal with money in a healthier way
“When it comes to money, there is a lot of naiveté. Children need to be taught in school that dealing with money is a basic life skill. They need to be able to read a bank statement in a(n) 35 way. When a transaction takes place, this means 36 pausing to say, ‘This exchange affects me in this and this way.’ We are often in too much of a hurry to realize that. We also forget that transactions are first and foremost about relationships. The quality of that relationship is more important than the transaction itself. That’s why Bedouins (游牧民族贝都因人) always share a cup of tea when they do business together. They understand the need to 37 their relationship with others.”
Another form of flow is giving. Can that be a kind of spiritual practice
“Humans are paradoxical beings. It is possible to have pure 38 and to get satisfaction as a by-product from your actions. There is the classic idea that giving away money brings a sense of safety and satisfaction. And it does. Being alive in this universe comes from the 39 that you’re part of a flow in the universe. People think highly of altruism (舍己为人), giving away money to someone who cannot see you. Donating money to charity is not just about the material effect but it also allows you to pay attention to what causes you’re supporting. It’s healthy to give without thinking of the material 40 . Money is neutral, like language. It’s all about the way in which it is used.”
III.Reading Comprehension (共45分。 41-55每题1分;56-70每题2分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
In Favour of Simple Writing
Do you edit text messages carefully before sending them If so, you may be the kind of person who takes pride in 41 even the simplest message. If you do not, you may see yourself as a go-getter, one who values excitement and speed over 42 : get it done decently now rather than perfectly later.
People are constantly receiving messages, from the mailbox to the inbox to the text-message alert. What to read, what to skim (略读) and what to ignore are decisions that nearly everyone has to make dozens of times a day. A new book titled All Readers are Busy Nowadays makes the argument for being the careful kind of 43 , even in informal lines. The authors also present well-established 44 that have long been prized in guides to writing.
Take “less is more”. Most books on writing well advocate the advice to 45 needless words. The authors, however, have 46 the idea. In an email to thousands of school-board members asking them to take a survey, cutting the count from127 to 49 words almost 47 the response rate.
Keeping messages to a 48 idea—or as few as absolutely needed—helps ensure that they will be read, remembered and acted on. 49 the number of the available options has the same effect, too. A link in an email, 50 , attracted 50% more clicks when presented alone than when it was sent alongside a second additional link.
Syntax (句法) and 51 matter, too. It is more 52 to adopt short and active sentences, with common words familiar to everyone. From Facebook posts to online-travel reviews, even brief, informal pieces of writing that follow these rules get more likes and shares.
If everyone is a busy reader, everyone is a busy writer, too. That may make it tempting to sent as many messages as 53 as possible and hope for the best. But from essays to text messages organizing dinner plans, devoting time to the needs of readers has provable 54 . If you are so busy that you write an undisciplined message which readers scan, ignore and delete, then you might as well have not 55 it at all.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Flinging brightly coloured objects around a screen at high speed is not what computers’ central processing units were designed for. So manufacturers of arcade machines invented the graphics-processing unit (GPU), a set of circuits to handle video games’ visuals in parallel to the work done by the central processor. The GPU’s ability to speed up complex tasks has since found wider uses: video editing, cryptocurrency mining and most recently, the training of artificial intelligence.
AI is now disrupting the industry that helped bring it into being. Every part of entertainment stands to be affected by generative AI, which digests inputs of text, image, audio or video to create new outputs of the same. But the games business will change the most, argues Andreessen Horowitz, a venture-capital (VC) firm. Games interactivity requires them to be stuffed with laboriously designed content: consider the 30 square miles of landscape or 60 hours of music in “Red Dead Redemption 2”, a recent cowboy adventure. Enlisting AI assistants to churn it out could drastically shrink timescales and budgets.
AI represents an “explosion of opportunity” and could drastically change the landscape of game development. Making a game is already easier than it was: nearly 13,000 titles were published last year on Steam, a games platform, almost double the number in 2017. Gaming may soon resemble the music and video industries in which most new content on Spotify or YouTube is user-generated. One games executive predicts that small firms will be the quickest to work out what new genres are made possible by AI. Last month Raja Koduri, an executive at Intel, left the chip maker to found an AI-gaming startup.
Don’t count the big studios out, though. If they can release half a dozen high-quality titles a year instead of a couple, it might chip away at the hit-driven nature of their business, says Josh Chapman of Konvoy, a gaming focused VC firm. A world of more choices also favors those with big marketing budgets. And the giants may have better answers to the mounting copyright questions around AI. If generative models have to be trained on data to which the developer has the rights, those with big back-catalogues will be better placed than startups. Trent Kaniuga, an artist who has worked on games like “Fortnite”, said last month that several clients had updated their contracts to ban AI-generated art.
If the lawyers don’t intervene, unions might. Studios diplomatically refer to AI assistants as “co-pilots”, not replacements for humans.
56.The original purpose behind the invention of the graphics-processing unit (GPU) was to ________.
A.speed up complex tasks in video editing and cryptocurrency mining
B.assist in the developing and training of artificial intelligence
C.disrupt the industry and create new outputs using generative AI
D.offload game visual tasks from the central processor

A.It contributes to the growth of user-generated content.
B.It facilitates blockbuster dependency on big studios.
C.It decreases collaboration between different stakeholders in the industry.
D.It may help to consolidate the gaming market under major corporations.
58.What can be inferred about the role of artificial intelligence in gaming
A.AI favors the businesses with small marketing budgets.
B.AI is expected to simplify game development processes.
C.AI allows startups to gain an edge over big firms with authorized data.
D.AI assistants may serve as human substitutes for studios.
59.What is this passage mainly about
A.The evolution of graphics-processing units (GPUs).
B.The impact of generative AI on the gaming industry.
C.The societal significance of graphics-processing units (GPUs).
D.The challenges generative AI presents to gaming studios.

A-Z OF COACHING
Welcome to Barefoot Coaching’s A-Z series. We aim to simplify what might otherwise be complex psychological theories and models and talk about them in a way that anybody can understand. We believe that everybody benefits from learning about and practising coaching skills - and it’s catching! Coaching spreads into other areas of our life and work and the positive effects are felt far beyond just ourselves. Each issue we will be focusing on a different element of coaching. Last month we explored Happiness, this month we will focus on Intuition.
‘I’ IS FOR INTUITION
“There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen.” Rumi
If you have ever followed a “hunch”, gone with your gut, listened to your inner voice, or felt “I just know”, then you have accessed your intuition. We don’t have to reject logic or intellect to embrace intuition -good decisions are often the result of instinct and intellect working together. Here are 3 ways to improve your intuition:
● Wild writing. Every day for a week, sit quietly and write for 5 minutes without thinking. Just let the words appear on the page. Then notice what you learn from your untamed thoughts.
● Walking without purpose. Go for a walk (without your phone or others distractions). Take notice if you find your attention being drawn to any particular sights or sounds. Identify what feelings, thoughts or meaning they have for you.
● When faced with a decision, ask yourself “What does my head, heart and gut say ”

C
In recent years, the International Space Field set off a new round of exploration craze, hoping to further master the space secrets and resources. Countries are busy developing rockets and satellites, developing manned space technology, formulating plans to explore the moon and Mars, and conquering space “One step ahead ”.
When engineers develop a spacecraft, they ask a few key questions that guide their process, says David Klaus, a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, who studies risk assessment and human spaceflight. They are, he explains, “What do we want to do What does it take to do it What can go wrong And what can we do to reduce the chance of the bad things going wrong ” These questions seem simple enough, but the answers are essential.
When NASA, SpaceX, Blue Origin or anyone else considers sending humans into space, the vehicle they build must do three things. First, it has to accommodate the crew members by meeting their basic needs such as oxygen, food and water. Second, it should allow them to accomplish mission objectives. Lastly, it must protect the people onboard and on the ground from the risks of spaceflight and reentry. Sometimes meeting one need introduces new risks. The crew needs to breathe, of course, but it was high-pressure tanks of liquid oxygen that caused an explosion on Apollo 13, and it was the fuel powering an oxygen generator that sparked a fire onboard the Mir space station in 1997.
Not only do astronauts float through a near vacuum (真空) filled with radiation, but in low-Earth orbit, where the International Space Station (ISS) operates, crews have to deal with a growing cloud of debris (碎片) circling Earth, which are usually from old satellites. The ISS’s debris protective covering can absorb impacts from particles smaller than half an inch, but between 1999 and 2022, the station had to fire pushers 32 times to avoid contact with larger objects. A single hit would be dangerous; at speeds of 17,500 miles per hour, even something the size of a softball can cause severe damage.
What is the point of looking decades into space and struggling to explore the vastness of the universe The development of the space industry has brought humans many benefits, the most important of which is the spread of information. The cell phone signal and TV signal people use now are all benefiting from the development of the space industry. The ultimate goal of mankind is to go deeper into space, and to explore more unknown worlds, that is, the Moon, Mars and beyond, and what humanity is eager to achieve is a common home of freedom and equality.
63.Why did the writer mention the explosion on Apollo 13 in Paragraph 3 and the fire onboard the Mir space station
A.To explain the high risks of the space industry.
B.To show the disadvantages of the space travel.
C.To prove the unexpected risks of the spaceflight process.
D.To describe the new risks involved in meeting the requirements.
64.What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph
A.The space environment itself piles on danger.
B.Any misstep on a space mission is fatal.
C.It is very difficult to complete the space mission.
D.Space engineers work hard to clean up space debris.
65.What is the ultimate goal of human exploration of space
A.More unknown planets and stars. B.Freedom and equality of human beings.
C.More protection against human diseases. D.Space secrets and endless resources.
66.What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean
A.Studying space for countless years. B.Living in space for many years.
C.Exploring space for some ten years. D.Observing space for several ten years.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Have you ever wondered what you would look like as a cartoon character or a marvel superhero With the power of artificial intelligence (AI) text-to-image generators, you can create images just like that - without any art skills. 67
How does it work
AI text-to-image generators are trained through a process called machine learning. In this process, the generator’s “brain” is fed massive numbers of images and learns to distinguish what they are. But the generator doesn’t just learn to tell the difference between a banana and a balloon.
68 These pixel-level details are then stored in a mathematical space. When someone gives the generator a text passage such as “Doraemon riding a white horse,” the program uses algorithms (算法) to “think.” Moments later, the program will create an entirely unique image that you requested.
Some artists worry that they are being replaced by this technology. But other artists like to cooperate with the generator, using its power for ideas and inspiration.
This powerful tool is now available to anyone through generators like Stable Diffusion and DALL-E. You can use them to create all kinds of imaginative images. 69
The dark side
Generators like Stable Diffusion are trained using images that are gathered from all over the internet. But the training process doesn’t exclude (排除) images that are violent or inappropriate, so the generators “learn” those as well. The DALL-E program comes with built-in filters that prevent it from generating perverse (变态的) images. But Stable Diffusion is an open-source technology, meaning that people can modify its code and remove the content filters. Despite this, Stable Diffusion’s founder Emad Mostaque remains optimistic about how people will use his generator. He says, “The bad stuff that people create ... will be a very, very small percentage of the total use.”
For better or for worse, 70 But don’t generate anything you’d be ashamed to show your mother!
A.But this technology can be dangerous as well.
B.You just need to have some experience with technology as well as a proper computer.
C.Therefore, AI technology will be used more and more wildly in the future.
D.AI text-to-image generators will become as common and easy to use as Google image search.
E.Rather, it will categorize every possible detail.
F.Meanwhile, the generator can help people to recognize various information accurately.
IV. Summary Writing(共10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Drawing High Schoolers to Science
A group of educators and plant scientists at Michigan State University (MSU) are connecting to reshape science classes. And this particular partnership isn’t just helping students get a better understanding of biology; it’s turning them into young scientists, even if only during class.
It doesn’t take long to see that the curriculum born from this collaboration makes for a much different experience than the traditional high school biology classes. For starters, it has a comic book for a workbook. Secondly, students are getting their hands dirty growing plants. MSU researchers are also studying the plant. The high schoolers are asking some of the same questions professional plant scientists are trying to answer.
“We’re getting them engaged with science in science practices, not just having them learn about science,” says Hildah Makori, a researcher at MSU. “They learn to look at things differently. That’s a life-time impact.”
The main characters of the comic book are a pair of young field scientists. They invite the high school students to help with plant research inspired by a real project at MSU. By growing their own plants, the students learn about genetics, evolution and how these interact with the environment.
The team has seen how this practice could keep students in the driver’s seat of their learning. To help the characters out, students set up different experiments to test their ideas.
The program is working. “This comic personally gave me a click that sparked my curiosity,” reads one student’s survey response. “The comic book put a lot of creative atmosphere into the story instead of just looking at words, instead of just listening to the teacher talk,” says another.
Teachers also had positive reviews. In a survey, one remarked how helpful it was to have the comic to refer to. The students could see the comic’s characters doing something in the lab and realize, “I’m able to do this right here at my table and I can do the same thing,” the teacher says.

【原文】
Flag football is a special form of American football. The essential rules of the flag football are the same as regular American football. However, rough contact, like pushing or tackling, is not allowed. In a flag football game, as its name suggests, players score by pulling a flag off their opponents belt instead of tackling the ball.
Flag football started out as a means of recreation for American soldiers during World War II who then brought the game back home with them. Today, it has become a favorite for youth players and, increasingly, female players, who have fewer opportunities to showcase their football talents. Millions of players across the US already count it as part of their lives, and games and matches between colleges have provided a robust foundation for the sport to grow.
And at higher levels, flag football is increasingly becoming an opportunity for talented female athletes to make their mark. Professionals involved in the sport hope it will eventually be seen as a common alternative to regular football. With the backing of the US National Football League, the International Olympic Committee recently announced that flag football will be played as an Olympic sport for the very first time in the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
Now listen again.

39.考查动名词。句意:生活在这个宇宙中源于你理解自己是宇宙中的一部分,是宇宙洪流中的一部分。根据下文“you’re part of a flow in the universe(你是宇宙洪流中的一部分)”可推理出此处说的是一种对自己的理解,空白处填表示“理解”含义的表达,故选F。
40.考查名词。句意:不考虑物质回报的付出是健康的。根据上文“It’s healthy to give without thinking of the material(不考虑物质……的付出是健康的)”以及下文“Money is neutral, like language. It’s all about the way in which it is used(金钱是中性的,就像语言一样。这完全取决于它的使用方式)”可知,此处上下文说的是不考虑……的给予行为是健康的,结合下文,这里将金钱比作语言,暗示金钱本身并没有好坏之分,关键在于人们如何使用它。因此,前文提到的“不考虑物质回报”与后文对金钱使用方式的讨论在逻辑上是连贯的,可推理出空白处应填表示“回报”含义的名词,故选I。

D.offload game visual tasks from the central processor
57.How might the rise of AI-gaming startups affect the development of the gaming industry

64.主旨大意题。根据第四段“Not only do astronauts float through a near vacuum (真空) filled with radiation, but in low-Earth orbit, where the International Space Station (ISS) operates, crews have to deal with a growing cloud of debris (碎片) circling Earth, which are usually from old satellites. The ISS’s debris protective covering can absorb impacts from particles smaller than half an inch, but between 1999 and 2022, the station had to fire pushers 32 times to avoid contact with larger objects. 65.细节理解题。根据最后一段“The ultimate goal of mankind is to go deeper into space, and to explore more unknown worlds, that is, the Moon, Mars and beyond, and what humanity is eager to achieve is a common home of freedom and equality.(人类的终极目标是向更深的空间发展,探索更多未知的世界,即月球、火星和更远的地方,人类渴望实现的是一个自由和平等的共同家园)”可知,人类探索太空的最终目的是实现人类的自由和平等。故选B。
66.词句猜测题。根据划线词组所在句“What is the point of looking decades into space and struggling to explore the vastness of the universe (放眼太空数十年,努力探索浩瀚宇宙的意义何在?)”可知,“放眼太空数十年”的意思是“对太空进行了几十年的观测”。故选D。

Li Ming
【参考答案】
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Li Ming from Class 1, Senior 3 of Haiping Middle School. I’m writing to apply for the position to help the primary school students in our community.
I am very good at mathematics, and I often make some micro-courses for primary school students. I plan to set up a micro-course, the name of which is “Mathematics in our daily life”. This course mainly introduces how to use math in everyday life so that primary school students can have a deeper understanding of the importance of mathematics through examples.
The reason why this micro-course is set up is that many students are not interested in learning mathematics. What’s more, mathematics is rarely used in real life, so many people think that learning mathematics is meaningless. I hope this course can help more primary school students, and I also hope to get this opportunity to improve myself.
Yours,
Li Ming
