Rick was one of my third-grade students.35 students were well behaved(表现好), but he was
one in one million. Rick liked talking in class, so he was a real chatterbox. I had to remind him
repeatedly that talking without permission( 允 许 ) was not allowed. However, he politely
apologized(道歉 ) to me every time I told him not to do it again,“Thank you for telling me,
Madam!”But I was used to hearing it many times a day.
One Friday, after working hard on a new idea all week, I felt that the students were edgy(烦躁

the paper.
That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student on a piece of paper and listed what
everyone else had said about that person. On Monday, I gave each student his or her list. Some of
them ran two pages. After reading them, each student was smiling.“I didn't know others liked me
so much!”Rick said.
Many years later, I got a call from Rick's parents and learned of his death. And then I received

In a few hours Sam would fly to Germany. We looked at each other but no sound broke the
silence(寂静) of our beach-side house.
Such a moment(时刻) was not the first time for us. I hardly found a quiet moment to tell him
what he meant to me, or what he might face in the future.
Sam was weak when he was born(出生) but grew into a strong boy. Then he became the best
baseball player in high school. I was sorry he gave up his sports talent, but proud that later he chose
English literature(文学). One day, I told Sam I regretted(后悔) never traveling to other countries to
know better about the world before working. Sam decided to learn German in Berlin, even though
his friends thought it meaningless.
What does it matter if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him But when I stood
before Sam, I knew it did matter. My father and I loved each other. However, I always regretted
never hearing him put his feelings into words.
“Sam, if I could pick, I would pick you.” I said, and that was all I could say. I wasn't sure if he
understood what I meant. Sam came over to me and threw his arms around me, saying“Thank you.”
My eyes misted over(模糊). Then, the moment ended, and Sam left home.
Thousands of miles away Sam might be busy walking in the street of Berlin.
What I said to Sam was clumsy(笨拙的)and not new. It was nothing. But, it was everything.

What's the difference between a fear(恐惧) and a phobia(恐惧症) You might have a fear of
dogs if you were hurt by one. However, if you try not to walk down streets where you think there
might be a dog, you may have a phobia. Phobia is a strong unnatural fear. If the fear starts to
change a person's life, he or she probably has a phobia. It's reported that about 80 percent of us
have at least one phobia.
Let's talk about what the most“popular”phobias are. Flying may be the safest way to travel,
but many people are afraid of doing it. Fear of heights is also very common. For example, the
Spiderman actor Tobey Maquire can't stand high places. However, he is not afraid of spiders.
Rupert Grint, who acts in the Harry Potters movies, is afraid of spiders.“In one scene of the movie,
we come into the large spider’s home, and there we meet a spider as big as an elephant. It's really
scary because it has hairs!”he said.
_________. For example, cats are very cute for most of us, but not for some famous people in
history such as Napolean(拿破仑). Actor Nicole Kidman says,“I'm not afraid of snakes or spiders,
but I'm afraid of butterflies. Sometimes when I came home from school, a big butterfly would sit
on our front gate. I would climb over the front gate, move slowly to the side of the house, or do
anything just not to go through the front gate.”Clowns(小丑) are not funny for actor Johnny Depp.
He thinks the“painted faces are scary smiles”he saw in his childhood still make him scared. Some
other strange phobias, such as caddies, old doors or windows and footsteps, also make some
famous people scared.

These days, “Citywalk” is becoming popular among young people. It’s about walking around
a city on foot and finding unusual things that people might not have noticed before. Such walks
take you to places where you can communicate with local people, eat at small but authentic (正宗
的) restaurants, and have a better understanding of the city’s history and culture.
Xu Yun, who these days moved from Beijing to Shanghai, said “I think Shanghai is a city
perfect for Citywalk. There are big trees along the streets and shops selling different products,
which is perfect for couples (情侣 ) and friends to walk together and take photos.” After several
Citywalk experiences, she signed up for a two-hour Citywalk priced at 88 yuan per person. A tour
guide introduced the history of the buildings and streets along the way. “If it were me walking
alone, I would simply find the streets beautiful, but the tour guide helped me have a better
understanding of the local culture in Shanghai,” she said. What’s more, she has made friends with
two other walkers.
Lin Yi, a manager of a company, thought Citywalk can help travelers learn about local culture
and live as local people do. “People participate (参加) in Citywalks usually have similar tastes, and
can have in-depth discussions with each other,” he said.
