Cold rains, icy sidewalks and gray skies can make winter travel a trial. But hot drinks, snowy slopes, frozen lakes and blue skies full of fresh air That’s the kind of winter we can all have a try. Here are some cities around the world that make for a great cold-weather destination.
Prague, Czech Republic
With its snow-capped towers and cobbled winding streets, Prague is a fairytale city that remains relatively tourist-free in winter. The unusual and impressive architecture looks even prettier under a sheet of snow. Gas street lamps throughout the city center add a romantic color to evenings. Cafes here are ideal for escaping the bitter cold. The fascinating Estates Theatre, where Mozart conducted the world premiere(首演) of “Don Giovanni” in 1787, is a must.
Tromso, Norway
Tromso, known as the capital of the Arctic, is great in winter. It’s widely regarded as Norway’s most beautiful city and is a base for spotting the northern lights. There are also fascinating museums, including the Polar Museum, which offers an insight into the history of Arctic expeditions, and the Tromso Museum, famous for its Sami exhibitions.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
In winter, Amsterdam’s museums are much less crowded, making it the time to visit attractions such as Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House. Built originally to house a circus, the Royal Carré Theatre is more than 130 years old. Children will love the spectacular performances.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Cobbled streets, a beautiful castle and lovely public gardens make Edinburgh a beautiful city any time of year, but in winter it’s breathtaking. Princes Street Gardens is transformed into a wonderland, with ice skating rinks, enormous Christmas trees and a Ferris wheel. On the edge of the city, Arthur’s Seat is the perfect location for a winter walk and the views from the top are second to none.

My grandmother moved into an old people’s home and I visited her there. She was sitting in the living room with other residents, half of them asleep. The room was clean and the care assistants were kind and cheerful. A general knowledge quiz show was on the television and the only other sounds were snoring (打呼噜). Grandma talked a lot about how much she missed her grandson but I hated going to visit her there and, to be honest, I couldn’t wait to get away myself.
So I was interested to read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionary—combining an old people’s home with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and share activities such as painting and gardening. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on. Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young. There are many reasons for this, but the result is the same: increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people having no contact with children, and more old people who feel lonely and useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. It’s a major problem in many societies.
That’s why intergenerational programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world. There are examples of successful initiatives. Young people teaching IT skills to older people is one obvious example. Old people working as volunteer assistants in schools is another, perhaps reading with children who need extra attention.
The advantages are enormous. The children are happy because they get more individual attention. They also see illness and death and learn to accept them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and more interested in life. There will be less conflict in a community if older people can understand the youth, and vice versa.
Now we need to rediscover what “community” really means. Then perhaps getting old won’t be such a depressing prospect after all.
4. Why did the author hate going to the old people’s home
A. The old people’s home was lifeless.
B. He didn’t love his grandmother that much.
C. He didn’t want to disturb the sleeping people.
D. The staff were so helpful that he wasn’t needed.

A. To present a possible solution.
B. To share his reading experience.
C. To introduce the topic for discussion.
D. To add some background information.

C. Support for children. D. Intergenerational contact.
7. What’s an advantage of bringing the old and the young together

C. Children learn more modern skills. D. The old can better understand aging.
C
For many people, having children can force them to choose between career and family. Sometimes it comes down to finances — sending a child to nursery or hiring a nanny can be a huge financial burden, while others may feel it’s better to be a hands-on parent. These days, more and more men are choosing to stay at home to look after the kids. So why are more dads choosing to put their careers on hold, and what does the job involve
With more women working outside the home than 70 years ago, if the need is there for one parent to stay at home, it could simply come down to who earns more — the biggest breadwinner. And with attitudes changing towards a man’s role in the family, it seems to be easier for them to enter full-time parenthood. Sadly, though, many men still feel shamed by choosing to raise their child. A study in the US by the Pews Research Center found that 51% of people thought children were better off if a mother stayed at home. But what do parents have to do when they choose to stay with their kids
In the early stages, a baby is totally dependent on a carer. The changing of nappies(尿布), burping after milk and making sure they feed on time are just some of the vital 24 -7 activities a baby relies on. During this period, many parents take paternity and maternity leave from work. But as a child gets older, it can become less about necessity and more about choice. Rather than choose a creche(日托中心), which can prove expensive, either parent may remain at home to educate, protect and play with their children to help them develop and grow.
It’s a difficult job, with a demanding boss, but it can also be incredibly rewarding for those willing to do it. And with attitudes changing towards who should stay at home, maybe more and more fathers will choose to become stay-at-home dads.
8. When may a man choose to stay at home for the child
A. When he is more needed by his child.
B. When he is tired of doing a full-time job.
C. When his wife earns more money than him.
D. When he wants to change his role in the family.
9. As the kid gets older, what does full-time parenting mean
A. It seems less expensive.
B. It is more time-consuming.
C. It is more important to kids.
D. It becomes more complicated.
10. What does “a demanding boss” in the last paragraph refer to
A. A kid. B. A carer. C. A parent. D. A manager.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Full-time Parenting is Rewarding.
B. More Men Become Full-time Dads.
C. Full-time Dads —Biggest Breadwinner.
D. Full-time parents Benefit Children’s Growth.
D
Few businesses can run without computers, giving keyboard shortcuts an incredible importance. Schools view typing courses as necessary. But what are we giving up as handwriting loses its significance
Brain power, according to science. Researchers from Princeton University and the University of California conducted a series of studies to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed them. Study participants took notes on a lecture using one of the two methods and were tested 30 minutes after the lecture, and again a week later.
The results showed both types of notetakers did well on the first test. The longhand notetakers had a stronger grasp of the overall concept. Students with the handwritten notes were also able to better remember and understand the concept of the lecture a week later, and were more open to understanding new ideas.
According to Pam Mueller, lead author of the study, “Our findings suggest even when laptops are used as intended, they may still be harming academic performance.” Part of the reason is that it was faster to take notes on the laptop, using exactly the same words meant they weren’t truly engaged in the content. But notetakers using pen and paper tended to digest the material better and could rephrase it in their own words.
Although typing notes using exactly the same words can help in recalling facts in the short term, it takes the focus away from the main points of the lesson. “Ironically, the feature that makes their laptop notetaking so attractive— the ability to take notes more quickly —was what weakened learning,” educational psychologist Dr. Kenneth Kiewra told the Wall Street Journal.
Computers aren’t going away soon, but that doesn’t mean paper notebooks become outdated. In fact, it is best to start using them at an early age. University of Indiana researchers compared brain scans of five-year-olds -some who practiced the printing letters, and some who just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the letters had more enhanced and adult-like brain activity.
12. In the study, what were the participants asked to do
A. Compare typing and handwriting.
B. Take notes by typing or handwriting and take tests.
C. Take two tests right after taking notes on the lecture.
D. Take notes using exactly the same words on the lecture.
13. What does the underlined word ”longhand“ in paragraph 3 mean
A. Fast. B. Flexible. C. Typing. D. Handwriting.
14. What contributes to better learning in note-taking
A. Using the exact words. B. Introducing modern tools.
C. Writing as quickly as possible. D. Rephrasing the learning material.
15. What would be the best title for the text
A. Typing matters in a way. B. A Pen is better than a keyboard.
C. Handwriting builds your brain power. D. Handwriting or typing is a question.

I think Luca and I live in different universes. Like yesterday. One of our division problems had the number 9, 999. She said, “All those nines. They feel so. . . so purple!” Purple I see numbers as logical and orderly. Not as colors.
However, our teacher assigned us two for a class project. We had to do a report on the rose willow (红柳). No way could I work with someone who said nines felt purple.
At our first meeting, we came up with a plan. Luca would make a 1. 5-meter tall tree, and I would write the report. But on Monday, just one week before the due, Luca said she was leaving to visit her grandfather but there was no room for a tree in the car. That means I, the one who can’t even draw a stick figure, would have to make the tree. And she, the one who doesn’t like to think logically, would have to write the report.
I reminded her of some things she should include in the report, such as its characteristics, distribution and function. “Please be at my house at 2:00 on Sunday,” I said. While she’d gone, I made the tree according to some directions online.
Sunday arrived. Luca turned up carrying only a digital recorder. “What’s that for ” I asked. “Where’s the report ” She said, “A written report doesn’t feel right, so I use feelings.” I tried to keep my voice calm, “Rose willows don’t have feelings.” “But my grandfather does,” Luca said. “I interviewed my grandfather about how he planted trees in the desert. Listen.”
A scratchy(沙哑的) voice came on. “The dry, hot weather makes it difficult for anything to survive. For five years, the seedlings we planted were all dead.” I looked sideways at Luca. Her nose was scrunched up(吱嘎作响). So was mine. He continued.
“We felt hopeless. Suddenly a young life swaying in the wind caught our eye. All of us cried—such joy. All my life, I remember that feeling, of seeing the little tree.” Luca turned off the recording and said, “He talks more, about living there and working there.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2, 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Looking at Luca, I was lost in thought.

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B

【10题详解】
词句猜测题题。根据划线单词上一段内容“In the early stages, a baby is totally dependent on a carer. The changing of nappies(尿布), burping after milk and making sure they feed on time are just some of the vital 24 -7 activities a baby relies on. During this period, many parents take paternity and maternity leave from work. But as a child gets older, it can become less about necessity and more about choice. Rather than choose a creche(日托中心), which can prove expensive, either parent may remain at home to educate, protect and play with their children to help them develop and grow.(在早期阶段,婴儿完全依赖于照顾者。换尿布,喝完奶打嗝,确保他们按时进食,这些都是婴儿一天24小时一周7天的重要活动。在此期间,许多父母休陪产假和产假。但随着孩子年龄的增长,它可能不再是必需品,而是更多的选择。与其选择昂贵的托儿所,父母可以留在家里教育、保护孩子,陪孩子玩耍,帮助他们发展和成长。)”可知,作者所谓的老板其实指的就是孩子,而孩子由于太小,非常依赖自己的父母。选项A“A kid (孩子)”;选项B“A carer (照顾者)”;选项C“A parent (父母)”;选项D“A manager (经理)”。故选A。
【11题详解】

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. C

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Researchers from Princeton University and the University of California conducted a series of studies to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed them. Study participants took notes on a lecture using one of the two methods and were tested 30 minutes after the lecture, and again a week later.(普林斯顿大学和加州大学的研究人员进行了一系列研究,以证明写笔记的学生和打字的学生之间的差异。研究参与者用两种方法中的一种记笔记,并在讲座后30分钟接受测试,一周后再次接受测试。)”可知,所有参与研究的人选择一种方法记笔记,可以通过手写笔记或者通过电脑打字记笔记,然后再接受测试。故选B。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词下一句“Students with the handwritten notes were also able to better remember and understand the concept of the lecture a week later, and were more open to understanding new ideas.(有手写笔记的学生在一周后也能更好地记住和理解讲座的概念,并且更愿意接受新的想法。)”

In fact, it is best to start using them at an early age. University of Indiana researchers compared brain scans of five-year-olds -some who practiced the printing letters, and some who just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the letters had more enhanced and adult-like brain activity.(电脑不会很快消失,但这并不意味着纸质笔记本会过时。

Less Stress, Healthier Life
Today, I would like to address an issue that we teenagers relate to in our lives: stress.
First, let’s face the fact: most middle school students are suffering pressure of some sort. It can range from academic performance, extracurricular activities to relationships with either peers or parents. It is so overwhelming that many physical and mental health problems arise.
So it’s of great significance that we learn how to manage our stress in a healthy way. Taking exercise regularly, having a balanced diet and getting enough sleep count a lot. Additionally, it’s important to practice stress-reducing techniques, such as communicating with someone we trust or engaging in activities we enjoy. Similarly, setting realistic goals will, to some extent, release our stress. Teenager life should be more enjoyable and fulfilling. I hope, by learning to manage pressure properly, every one of us can lead a happier and healthier life. Thank you!

第二节(满分 25分)
47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The next day, we put our tree in the middle of the classroom.

【答案】Looking at Luca, I was lost in thought. I began to feel what she said did make sense. A report was not necessarily made with written words. For our project, it would work better if we included people’s feelings. Excitement growing in my heart, I turned to Luca, “I love your idea of the recording! It’s awesome!” Luca smiled. The rest of that afternoon witnessed our joint efforts to do the report and practise the presentation. We believed our report would surely impress everyone.
The next day, we put our tree in the middle of the classroom. Our report began with a brief conventional introduction. Then, I asked a question, “Do you guys know what the rose willow means to the people living in the desert ” Seeing most shaking their heads, Luca turned on the recorder. The scratchy voice drew everyone’s attention. I noticed some faces softened and some eyes red. Our report ended. Then a burst of applause. Looking at Luca, I realized that things might go smoother if we opened our mind and tried a new angle, even though we were in different universes.
