Amanda Gorman, a 22-year-old poet, recited her poem The Hill We Climb at the recent Presidential
Inauguration (就职 ) Ceremony. Her words and performance were wonderful and were admired across the
world. But what is even more wonderful is the story of howAmanda arrived at this moment and the lessons she
offers other kids around the world.
Amanda was raised by a single mother, Joan Wicks, in Los Angeles. There was very limited television
watching in their house. Encouraged by her mother, who was a teacher, Amanda fell in love with reading and
writing. She gained confidence in these areas. Her passion for poetry started when she was about 8 years old.
But despite her interests and talents, she had some obstacles. Amanda has a listening processing disorder
and is very sensitive to sound. She also had a speech disorder during childhood. This caused her to participate
in speech treatment which helped her to turn her obstacles into gifts and strengths. As she told The Harvard
Gazette in 2018, “I always saw it as a strength because since I was experiencing these obstacles in terms of my
listening and speech skills, I became really good at reading and writing.”
Amanda started to dream of becoming president when she was in 6th grade. As Amanda became more
confident, she became more driven to transform the world for good. She went on to earn a degree at Harvard
University. And then, Amanda became the world’s first Youth Poet Laureate (获奖者) in history!
While Amanda looked calm, cool, and collected at the inauguration, she admits she is always nervous, like
many of us, about public speaking. To ease this, she developed a spell that she recites to give herself confidence

College and high-school teachers are expressing concern about ChatGPT, an AI program that allows
people with limited writing skills to create high-quality texts. It calls into question how and why we teach
writing at all. If AI can do a fairly good job at most writing tasks, why spend so much time learning writing in
school
In fact, learning to write goes beyond just mastering grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. It
involves much more. For one thing, it’s about learning to turn a loose set of thoughts into a clear line of
reasoning — a skill that is useful for everyone, not just those who enjoy writing or need to do a lot of it for
work.
Learning to write also trains your imagination to construct the person who will read your words. It puts
you in relation to someone you may not know, someone who may even not exist. When you learn to write, you
learn to meet their needs in an unfamiliar context. Even ordinary assignments teach students to predict what
another person knows and expects.
Writing is never simply self-expression. It’s expression to a specific audience for a specific purpose. In
some cases, like a love letter, a writer knows their audience very well. In others, the audience is every bit a
work of the imagination as a novel’s characters are. Writers, then, should give up trying to address the public at
large, but should imagine that a friend, though not the closest friend, is listening to our talk.
When this act of imagination is done well, a reader can feel deeply understood, as if a stranger has told
them some previously unknown truth about themselves. That’s how I felt reading “Difference Maker” — an
essay about parenthood. While our situations were unique, naming the problem provided a deeper
understanding.
It seems unavoidable that large-language models of AI will allow us to offload some of the writing tasks
that students learn in school. But we can’t allow ourselves to lose the capacity to empathize (共情) with distant
strangers at just the moment when we’re more able than ever to communicate with them.
28.What is teachers’ concern about ChatGPT
A. It’s a challenge to apply it to teaching. B. It’s hard to grade a paper written by it.

29.What does the author think of learning to write
A. It helps with logical thinking. B. It is a basic skill for everyone.
C. It focuses on correct expression. D. It is closely related to social skills.
30.What makes writing effective according to the text
A. Expressing oneself. B. Targeting intended readers.
C. Conveying imaginative ideas. D. Creating attractive characters.
31.What may be a suitable title for the text
A. What AI Can’t Teach the Writing Students B. ChatGPTWriting VS Traditional Writing

Breathing is something you do all day long, without even thinking about it. However, you might be doing it
wrong. Research shows that the way you breathe affects the amount of oxygen (氧气) you take in,as well as
how you think and feel.
So which is it Do you breathe through your nose or your mouth Some health experts recommend people

Nose breathing may improve how memories are stabilized (稳定 ) in our brains, according to Swedish
researchers. During the study, participants smelled 12 different smells and they were asked to breathe either
through their nose or mouth for an hour afterwards. Then, they were presented with the original set of smells
and a new set. Those who smelled with their nose remembered the smells better.
A research team recognized the differences in brain activity that happened when seven epilepsy (癫痫 )
patients breathed through the nose or through the mouth. The team found three areas of the brain where activity
is connected with breathing. These areas showed more changes in brain activity only when volunteers breathed
in through their noses.
So, should people breathing through the mouth change their breathing habits If you’re happy with the way
you breathe and you aren’t experiencing any health problems, be yourself and just keep your own way. But if
you think it might be time for a change, focus on breathing through your nose until it becomes a habit. It might
help you survive an emergency.

A. Your life style. B. How you breathe.
C. How you think and feel. D. The oxygen you take in.
33. What did Swedish researchers find

B. Mouth breathing causes health problems.

Finally, the bell rang. “Don’t forget to practice your class presentation at home!” Miss Bella cried as
everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class.
She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary,
Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain so rt of
shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned
the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jessy bent
down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking.
She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just
flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But
when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the
water...”Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain so
rt of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes
of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody
moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind.
“She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Every Setback Is a Test for Us
Hello, everyone. I’m Li Hua. Today I am very glad to have the chance to speak about the
topic: Every Setback Is a Test for Us.
As we all know, everyone will face some setbacks every now and then. I came across many
setbacks in my study and life. I failed in my physical final exam when I was in Senior One.
Knowing the result, I cried hard. I analyzed the situation and studied harder. Finally, I became
good at physics. In my opinion, when setbacks happen, we should be brave and stay optimistic. It
is a good way to relieve the pain by turning to our trusted ones for comfort, watching a funny
movie, listening to music or visiting a beautiful place.
Suffering is the most powerful teacher of life and every setback is a test for us. I absolutely
believe that we need to face the setbacks bravely and learn from them. Only the one who passes
the test can succeed.
Thanks for your Listening.
读后续写
Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jessy, waiting for an explanation. A flush of
embarrassment came to her cheeks, making Jessy biting her lips. Dead silence suddenly fell. Then
came Miss Bella’s voice, “Why is Lee’s watch on your wrist ” Jessy hesitated for a while and
decided to tell the truth. However, on second thoughts of the well-prepared speech and the magic
of the watch, she changed her mind. “Miss Bella, could I give the speech first and then explain ”
She made a request in a tone of begging.
Miss Bella smiled and asked the class to listen to Jessy’s speech first. Jessy put away her
fright, took a deep breath, and made for the platform. Casting a glance at the sea of faces watching
her, Jessy cleared her throat and began her speech. “I’m going to talk about swimming...” Word
began to flood out of her. “What a terrific speech.” Whispers went around the classroom, and even
Miss Bella nodded with approval. Immediately Jessy finished her speech, a storm of applause
erupted from the class. Relieved, Jessy told everyone the truth, and especially the magic of the
watch. She returned the watch to Lee as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.

M: Wow, look at the line! It’s worse than I expected. We’re lucky we got here an hour early. Or
else we would definitely have had problems getting good seats.
W: Me, too. I learned my lesson last week I went to a movie opening. I didn’t arrive early and
ended up with a terrible seat all the way in the front row! Believe me, it was one of the
worst movie experiences ever.
M: Yeah! I hate sitting in the first row.
W: By the way, it was really thoughtful of you to get this ticket for me.Why don’t I show you a
bit of appreciation by getting you some popcorn and a drink
M: That would be great!
W: OK. What kind of soda do you want
M: Let me see...I’ll take a large Coke. As for the popcorn, medium size will do.
W: I’d better get going.
M: Wait! You’d better bring your ticket in case I get let in before you get back.
W: Oh, I almost forgot. If that happens, I’ll meet you inside.
M: OK. It’s a plan.
Text 10 (180词) 万圣节
M: People often think that Halloween is an American holiday. But in fact, it comes from the
Celts of Ireland. Today, people don’t do the same as the old Celts: they don’t have a big good
meal before winter and don’t leave their houses cold and without light for the night, so spirits
don’t want to live there. However, wearing scary masks and costumes—to make the spirits go
away—is an old Celtic tradition. Today’s people and especially children enjoy Halloween
costume parties. They dress up as vampires and ghosts, but also heroes. Children in masks go
from house to house and when the door opens, they say: Trick or treat! If they don’t get
sweets, they do something bad, for example, throw eggs at the house.
Typical symbols of the holiday are horror characters: spiders, black cats, witches, and ghosts,
but also big orange autumn vegetables: pumpkins. You can cook excellent pumpkin soup or
bake a pie, and make a lantern from the peel. Great Britain and the USA celebrate Halloween
every year on the last October day.
