Dear Ms. Smith,
The Dragon Boat Festival is just around the corner. As chairman of the Students’ Union, I am
honored to invite you to join us in making Zongzi to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Chinese people make
Zongzi as a tradition in memory of Qu Yuan, an ancient patriot. As scheduled, the activity will be held
at 8 a.m. this Friday in the school dining hall. We will provide all the necessary ingredients and tools,
and we will guide you through the whole process of making Zongzi. Through this interesting activity,
not only can you experience the joy of making Zongzi in person but you are also exposed to traditional
Chinese culture.
I would be grateful if you could accept my invitation. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Text 10
Look at any ship and you will see a line painted on the side. (18) The line is known as the
Plimsoll Line. It is named after a 19th century British lawmaker, Samuel Plimsoll. (19) In 1870,

putting too many things on their ships, making them dangerous for the people who worked on them.

Many sailors refused to go to sea because they were worried for their safety. Ships from Venice were
protected by the lines as long ago as the 12th century, (20) but it was not until the 19th century that
they became law, thanks to Samuel Plimsoll. In 1894, the position of the line was fixed by law. It is
painted on the side of ships, and the water level isn’t supposed to go above the line. The basic sign, of a
circle with a line passing through its center, is now recognized worldwide.
