In American English, when someone says he has to “face the music”, it doesn’t mean he is going to a musical performance or a concert.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful sports car. She says, “Please don’t drive it. It’s an extremely fast car.” But you want to pretend the car is yours. So, you drive it around one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. When your friend returns, you must “face the music”. It can be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her car or both.
In 1851, the writer James Fenimore explained “face the music”. In a theater, the orchestra (管弦乐队) sits in front of the stage. So, the actors on stage face the musicians. Many actors are very nervous, and this condition is called “stage fright”. They may want to run away. “Facing the music” means accepting it and not giving in to it.
Word experts say “face the music” may come from the army. A soldier could be forced out of the horse cavalry (骑兵团) because of the serious mistake in the war. The army drummers would play a sad beat. The soldier would be seated backward on a horse and face the music of the drums.
To “take your medicine” is to accept the bad result from something you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it,” he means you create a bad situation and you must deal with it. “Pay the piper” is also similar to “face the music”. But it’s fun to “lie in the bed and enjoy music”.
There are many idioms (习语) in the English language, whose real meanings are largely based on the context. Don’t read only with your eyes, or you would make a fool of yourself.
24. In paragraph 2, “face the music” probably means “________”.
A. accept the bad result B. go to a concert
C. refuse to repair the car D. pretend the car is yours
25. What can we know about the soldier in the text
A. He wanted to be a cavalry officer. B. He would play the drum in the army.
C. He must have done something terrible. D. He would be punished by the army drummers.
26. Which is different from the other expressions in meaning
A. Pay the piper. B. Take your medicine.
C. Lie in the bed and enjoy music. D. You made your bed. Now lie in it.
27. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The great fun of learning English idioms. B. The origins of some useful English idioms.
C. Some interesting stories from English idioms. D. Understanding English idioms in the context.

Two teens from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, went viral (走红) when they put their lives on line to save a 3-year-old girl.
One night, Dalaurence Holland, 15, and Zech Krinjnic, 13, were sitting and talking on Zech’s porch. It was pretty late, and the sky was dark. There were no adults or parents around, so the teens were just chatting and enjoying the fresh air. At about 10:15 pm, they were surprised to see a figure emerging from the bushes below. At first, they thought it was a fox or some other kind of animal. But they didn’t want anything to end up dead.
Dropping their conversation, the two rushed towards the animal hoping to save it. But when they got closer, they realized it wasn’t an animal —it was a 3-year-old girl heading straight for a busy highway. The boys hadn’t realized it was a little girl at first but now, time stood still. The little girl was all alone and there wasn’t an adult in sight. But what was even worse, they soon realized, there was a truck coming directly her way.
Both teens raced for the little girl, but Dalaurence got there first. There was no hesitation in either of their actions as they put their lives on the line. Dalaurence raced into the road, reaching the little girl just seconds before she would have been hit by the rushing truck. Luckily for the little girl, he snatched her out of the way just in time.
Thanks to Dalaurence and Zech’s heroic actions, the little girl’s life was saved. It’s unclear why the girl was on the road by herself. As for Dalaurence and Zech, the two boys received a flood of praises when their story went viral online. Later, Mount Juliet officials even gave them a key to the city in honor of their good deed. Thank goodness the brave teens were in the right place, at the right time.

On July 11th Virgin Galactic (维珍银河) finally realized the promise that it would take passengers on life-changing trips in its spaceships. For 4 minutes, its 6 temporarily weightless passengers, including the firm’s co-founder, Sir Richard Branson, saw the planet’s curvature (曲度)against the blackness of outer space. He may have been pleased to beat Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s retired boss, who would go slightly higher for slightly less time in a vehicle built by his own company, Blue Origin, on July 20th.
The two are among a growing group of fans who believe space travel’s time has come. Suborbital (亚轨道的) tourism is part of a broader space economy that has boomed over the past decade thanks to technological advances. Those at Morgan Stanley expect the entire space economy to bring in $1 trillion by 2040, from $350 billion today. UBS expects the entire space economy to produce $800 billion by the end of this decade. Space travel, it thinks, will make “a big contribution” to that total.
But that is highly unlikely. For example, space travel is not even Blue Origin’s main goal. The company is focusing on developing a large new rocket for launching satellites, on selling advanced rocket engines to other companies and on winning NASA contracts such as that for a system to land humans on the Moon. In the long run, Mr Bezos doesn’t see Blue Origin as a provider of services to thrill-seekers.
The business can be promising once regular flights begin to offset (抵消) the rockets’ development costs. But how fast and by how much is uncertain. Without tourist-friendly places to visit, space travel, with its far higher ticket prices, will not be a huger earner.
Another challenge-also the biggest uncertainty-relates to safety. History has shown that a disaster can set progress back by years. Even with no accidents, problems may come up. Strict top-down rules could mean that industry will no longer have the freedom to pursue new approaches to improving safety.
Space travel may remain a hobby for a few super-rich with a desire to take risks and lots of time to spare. Not exactly a mass market, then, for the time being.
32. Why is the event of Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos mentioned
A. To describe a debate between them. B. To introduce the topic of space travel.
C. To prove Virgin Galactic’s development. D. To draw our attention to the two super-rich.
33. The underlined word “boomed” in paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A. increased B. recovered C. slowed D. weakened
34. What does Blue Origin mainly focus on
A. Flying the super-rich to space. B. Improving the safety of space travel.
C. Selling equipment to other companies. D. Developing the most advanced satellites.
35. Why is space travel not a mass market now
A. Super-rich people are unwilling to pay for it. B. There are too many travel places to choose from.
C. Problems of safety and costs remain to be solved. D. Only the super-rich are allowed by the strict rules.

Students call Foreign Language Talent Show the biggest stage in our school. I knew it could change my life forever as I stood on that huge stage, staring at the audience, with my throat dry. When judges asked me to introduce myself, words failed me. The crowd fell silent, waiting for me to say something. Eventually, I stammered (结结巴巴地说) my name and my age.“As you can tell,”I said,“I have a speech disorder...”
I loved singing English songs and had already signed up for the school foreign language talent show in seventh grade when I started stammering. Fortunately, most of the students at my school were kind, and I was rarely made fun of. I tried speech therapy (疗法), too, but it didn’t work much. I was afraid to sing in the school talent show. Therefore, I decided to practice at home. What surprised me most was that the words came smoothly when I sang. And then I decided to learn to play the guitar, which was given as a birthday gift by my father.
One afternoon, I walked into the basement, where I kept my musical equipment. My eyes lit on the guitar. I picked it up and started playing. I opened my mouth, and the words came flooding out. Then I wrote a song called I can do, telling the pain I had experienced. The next day, I filmed a video of performing the song and posted it online. Hundreds of strangers left comments that I had uplifted them with my music. Ever since, I have been writing songs.
Last year, I started college and majored in music production. when I saw Talent Show audition(试唱) announcement pop up on my computer, I wanted to have a try. Several months later, I was standing on that stage, trying to calm my nerves as I introduced myself, “I have a speech disorder.” I said, “It was definitely something that caused me to…” I took a long pause to find the words.“……to hide. But I found that I don’t stammer when I sing.”

My Ideal School Canteen
I’d like to introduce my ideal school canteen to you - Happy Canteen. It is a wonderful building located in the center of the campus with modern appearance and convenient equipment.
The canteen is a three-storey building and can accommodate many students at a time. The most impressive part is the central heating and air cleaning systems that operate 24 hours a day using solar energy.
The canteen provides a wide range of food, including the vegetarian food and the non-vegetarian food. Here we can enjoy the normal meals or fast food which includes sandwiches, rolls, wraps, burgers and so on. Even soft drinks and juices are provided.
第二节(共25分)
Then I began to sing a new song I had just written. I tried to focus on the music instead of the eyes on me, and just as I had said there was no stutter at all. When I finished, the whole crowd was on its feet, and so were the judges. I couldn’t hold back my tears when the judges thought highly of my beautiful voice. For my second performance, I sang another original song. I placed fourth in my round of the finals, with which I was really satisfied.
My performance on Talent Show had a deep influence on me. Now I’m more comfortable putting myself out there, taking the risk that I might get denied. I continue to have difficulty speaking, yet I’m able to speak fluently through my music. I still find myself worrying about the future I can’t control, but I know that I can go as far as possible. I really feel grateful for the hard times I have been through and the struggles I have endured, which are what make me who I am.

M: I mailed some checks to you last week. I just want to see if the money is in my account.
W: I’d be happy to help you, sir. First, may I ask who is speaking please
M: George Smith.
W: OK, Mr. Smith. Can you tell me your address, please
M: Yeah, 2905 Berkshire Road.
W: I’m sorry, but that’s not the address we have on file.
M: Oh, I apologize. I moved last week, and I just forgot to update my information. The old address was 38 Parkview Drive, north of Alston Way.
W: Yes, that’s the one we have. Can I have your date of birth
M: January 9th, 1958.
W: Very good. And can you please tell me your social security number
M:78669824670.
W: OK, Mr. Smith. Hold on while I’m checking the information, please.

W: Which university do you want to go to, James
M: Well, I can’t decide. I’m worried I will make a wrong choice. I want to be a teacher, just like you, Ms. Skinner. I want to go to Columbia University, but it’s so expensive. It’s also very far from my family. I would also like to go to Northwestern University, but none of my friends from high school is going there.
W: You’ll make new friends when you go to college.
M: I’m worried about making new friends. Also, I’m worried I won’t be smart enough to get good grades at a difficult college. I may go to the University of California, but I don’t think they have good teaching. Most importantly, I want to go to a school that is famous for teaching.
W: Those are all excellent schools. If you’re accepted into all those schools, you should consider yourself very fortunate. When I went to school, I went to a very small college, but I still got a great job in this school. You will be successful because you are always working very hard.
M: Thanks for your help, Ms. Skinner.

Good evening, everyone! You are listening to Pop World of BCD International. Since many people want to listen to and understand pop songs, radio producers at BCD International have made hundreds of programs over the years. The History of Pop or The Road to Music brings you the language of pop music and information about the period and the artists. If you want to hear from the artists themselves, there’s a new series called About the Big Hits. This is based on interviews with popular singers and song writers. They talk to us about the meanings and ideas behind songs.
If you want to understand the words to the big music hits, Pop Words is the program for you. After all, it’s a little hard even for native English speakers to understand most pop songs. So, if English is not your first language, you shouldn’t be surprised if the words to many songs leave you in the dark.
