Over the last century, engineers .all over the world have spared no effort to achieve the unachievable in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The 164.8-kilometre-long bridge built in 2011 in China operates as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxing that previously took 4.5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box-girder(箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles per day.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world's longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-longbridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over·water”.

When Arvin Kuipers, who graduated from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 2017and loves Chinese culture, asks his patients to stick out their tongue so he can diagnose (诊断) their illness, many are confused.
Kuipers, 30, practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, said, “In TCM I need to do face and tongue diagnosis. That’s strange for people in my country.” One elderly woman had been visiting him occasionally for advice, but her first experience with TCM surprised her. She had never experienced acupuncture (针灸) or any other TCM treatment. “She came in, and I examined her face and tongue,” said Kuipers. “I told the patient her kidneys were not doing well and that she wasn’t getting proper sleep.” The woman was shocked by his insight and asked if he had been spying on her. “Actually, it was easy to diagnose her condition when I saw the dark rings under her eyes. Her energy levels were also very low at the time.”
Kuipers opened his TCM clinic in September. Most of his work involves performing acupuncture, cupping as well as tuina —a TCM massage that patients in the West like the most, he said. In some cases he also gave his patients traditional herbal medicines.
Kuipers usually makes a cup of Chinese tea to calm his patients if they are nervous about the acupuncture needles. He also explains to them the meridian (经络) system, which is a central concept of TCM, yin and yang, and other concepts. “In TCM, good health requires balanced yin and yang, so practitioners not only pay attention to a patient’s illness, but also to his or her overall physical condition,” said Kuipers. “TCM is also a different culture and offers a new perspective, instead of being a curing method.”
As of early April, Kuipers has treated more than 200 patients, many of whom come to his clinic every week. “TCM does work, and works well. My patients really feel better with it, so I value it, and when my patients feel better I also feel better.”
24. What can we learn from the elderly woman’s story in paragraph 2
A. The elderly woman trusted TCM treatment in the beginning.
B. TCM is very different from the treatment in her country.
C. The elderly woman used to visit Kuipers a lot for TCM.
D. The elderly woman was shocked at her kidneys not doing well.
25. Which TCM treatment is most welcomed by the patients in the West
A. Acupuncture. B. Cupping. C. Tuina. D. Herbal medicines.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Why Kuipers’ patients are fond of Chinese tea.
B. How Kuipers explains meridian system to his patients.
C. why Kuipers pays little attention to overall physical condition.
D. How Kuipers applies Chinese culture and treatments to patients.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To praise Kuipers for his TCM treatments.
B. To stress the value of teaching foreigners TCM.
C. To tell the story of Kuipers practising TCM in the Netherlands.
D. To show the popularity of TCM with patients in the Netherlands.

Native to forests of Central and South America, glass frogs in the Centrolenidae family get their name from their skin and muscles that help them be perfectly fit to live in their jungle environment. Turn the frogs over, where the effect is the most impressive, and you’ll make out their hearts, livers, and other organs through their hyaline stomachs.
And in a study published in the journal Science, researchers have discovered an amazing mechanism (机制) the animals use to become so clear.
When glass frogs go to sleep, they take in 89 percent of their brightly colored red blood cells into sacs(液囊) in their livers, which reflect incoming light and make the frogs appear nearly unseen. With their red blood cells out of view, the frogs become twice to three times more clear -a trick scientists believe helps the animals avoid being killed and eaten by their natural enemies.
“The trick is really hard to do, because their tissues are full of things that take in and spread light. And transparency (透明) is normal for many creatures in water, but hard on land,” says study co-author Jesse Delia. “Red blood cells also take in a lot of light, and we found that the frogs can actually hide themselves by packing them into the liver.”
Not only are the findings interesting, but the researchers attach great importance to them. That’s because many red blood cells in one place usually form a clot (血块), which can block and lead to a potentially life-threatening condition. But the frogs can seemingly clot and expand their red blood cells at will — without any negative effects. This may mean the animals already have what medical researchers have been seeking for decades: a biological mechanism which prevents too much bleeding while also preventing too much clotting.
28. What does the underlined word “hyaline” mean in paragraph 1
A. See-through. B. Powerful. C. Narrow. D. Good-looking.
29. What is the new discovery about glass frogs
A. The frogs fit in their environment better.
B. Sacs filled with red blood cells make the frogs clear.
C. Red blood cells in the frogs’ liver reflect light.
D. The frogs are able to take in a lot of bright colors.
30. What does Jesse Delia think of glass frogs’ trick
A. Interesting. B. Unusual. C. Normal. D. Annoying.
31. Why do the researchers consider the findings important
A. They help cure serious diseases.
B. They are a blessing for wild animals.
C. They can lead to advances in medicine.
D. They will prevent all clotting and bleeding.
D
About 12% of the total global energy demand comes from heating and cooling homes and businesses. A new study suggests that using underground water to maintain comfortable temperatures could reduce consumption of natural gas and electricity in this section by 40% in the US. The approach is called ATES, short for aquifer thermal energy storage(含水层热能储存).
“We need storage to absorb energy from the sun and wind. It’s crucial to creating affordable, reliable, and deeply environmental-friendly electricity systems. Most people are interested in batteries and other kinds of electrical storage. But we were wondering whether there was any opportunity to use geothermal (地热的) energy storage,” said first author A. T. D Perera. “With ATES, energy can be stored for a long period of time, without adding an additional burden to the grid (输电网).”
ATES is a pleasantly simple concept that takes advantage of the heat-absorbing property of water and the natural geological features of the planet. You simply pull existing underground water up and heat it at the surface in the summer with environmental heat or energy. Then you send it back down. It stays fairly hot because the Earth is a good insulator (绝热体).
“Unlike above-ground tank-based water or ice storage systems, ATES will not need space. It’s also more efficient and can support larger communities in cooling or heating than traditional geothermal heat pump systems that rely on heat moving with the underground soil,” added coauthor Hong Tianzhen.
A major benefit of ATES is that it will become more efficient as weather becomes more extreme in the coming years due to climate change. The hotter summers and severer winters could increase the amount of free thermal energy that can be stored with ATES. “It’s very much a realistic thing to do and this work is really about showing its value,” said Perera. “This technology is ready to go, so to speak. We just need to do it.”
32. What do we know about ATES
A. It is aimed at replacing natural energy.
B. It mainly relies on batteries to function.
C. It is technologically demanding.
D. It helps achieve an environmental-friendly society.
33. How does Hong Tianzhen explain ATES’s advantages
A. By giving examples. B. By discussing results.
C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing principles.
34. Which will affect ATES’s efficiency most
A. Extreme weather. B. Insulated materials.
C. The time of storage. D. The type of energy.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. A Turning Point in Energy Usage
B. A Transformation in the US Electricity System
C. A Solution to Green Cooling and Heating
D. A Discovery About Geothermal Energy Storage

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. But she did make it. Due to her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(大礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out for it each year, but so many were turned away. It could only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to her music teacher Mrs. Owens to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Emily’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn’t want to be refused again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to accompany Emily. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.
