Ms Zhao: Listen carefully, everyone! I have an important announcement to make. I want to tell you about some guests who are coming to our city next month. They have never been to China before and they are coming all the way from Boston in the USA. There will be 15 foreign guests altogether.
The guests represent a teachers’ group in Boston. They are coming here to attend a conference and give some lectures. They will also visit our school to learn more about Chinese methods of education.
The guests will stay here for five days in total. They will spend three days working and then they will have two days to explore our city. I’d like you to make a two-day travel plan for our guests, so that they get to see the best of what our city has to offer.
Transcript
Ms Zhao: I’d like you to work in groups to think about what kinds of things the guests might like to do. For example, they might want to visit our city museum to learn more about our long history. They might want to buy some souvenirs to remind them of their trip here. They might want to have a lunch or dinner at a local restaurant. Think about some restaurants that might be suitable. And if the weather is good, it might be nice to show our guests around the sights of our city on foot. Would any of you like to volunteer and show our guests around with me Please come and see me at the end of the class.
Read the travel plan on page 9 and answer the following questions.
1. What does this travel plan consist of
the city name
recommended means of transport
activities
pictures
tourist attractions
Reading
2. Why does the travel plan include these tourist attractions
These tourist attractions are representative of different aspects of Shanghai. For example, we can enjoy beautiful scenery in Yu Garden, experience the elegant lifestyle in Xuhui District, gain a glimpse of the Buddhist culture at Jing’an Temple, buy some souvenirs in Nanjing Road, learn more about history in Shanghai Museum and appreciate classical art in Shanghai Grand Theatre.
3. How do the tourists travel between the tourist attractions
The travel plan lists different means of transport, most of which are environmentally friendly, like riding bikes, taking the subway and bus, and travelling on foot.
4. How can you improve this travel plan
We can add the suggested tour time and ticket price for each destination. And we can also reduce the number of attractions, as the two-day schedule seems tight.
In pairs, discuss how to arrange a two-day visit to your hometown for the foreign guests.
Slowing down the discussion
When your partner wants to move on to the next topic, but you think you still have something to say, you can slow down the discussion, e.g. Sorry, may I add something before we move on Sorry, shall we talk a bit more about ... before we move on

A: Let’s discuss our two-day travel plan for the guests from Canada visiting our city next month.
B: OK. We should introduce our city by sharing some basic information with them. For example, Xi’an is the oldest of the four great ancient capitals. That should interest them.
A: I agree. So on the first day we should start with a visit to the main attraction — the Terracotta Army. That would be a great way to connect them with our city’s history.
B: After the tomb visit, let’s have lunch at a nearby restaurant that serves local food like flatbread in mutton soup.

A: Great plan. I propose we go to the Textile Town after lunch. They’ll enjoy watching the local artists at work and they can buy souvenirs if they want to. And on the second day, we can ...
B: Sorry, shall we talk a bit more about the evening plan before we move on
A: Sure.
B: In the evening, we could walk along the popular food and shopping street in the city, where our guests can try the wonderful foods available there.
A: Yes! Like biangbiang noodles, a famous Xi’an dish.
B: True! Let’s discuss the second day’s plan.
A: What about a visit to the ancient city wall and the famous Bell Tower and Drum Tower
B: Great idea! After another delicious lunch, we should also take a tour of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and then have another great dinner of local food.
A: Perfect, I think that is a great way to end their two-day visit.
B: Sorry, may I add something For dinner we should find a place where they can eat while watching Qinqiang Opera.
A: I like your idea very much. I know our guests will never forget their short visit to the wonderful city of Xi’an.

Dear Guests,
Welcome to Xi’an! I hope you have a smooth journey to China. My teacher Ms Zhao, some classmates and I have arranged a two-day travel plan to show you around Xi’an after you finish your work.
Greet the guests first and state the purpose of the email.
Xi’an is an ancient city rich in history. In fact, it is one of the oldest cities in China and the oldest of the four great ancient capitals. A famous former name of Xi’an is Chang’an, which means “everlasting peace”. As you can imagine, there is a lot to do and see in this beautiful old city.

Following our travel plan, on the first day we would like to show you the main attraction in Xi’an. It is the Terracotta Army in the tomb of the first emperor of a united China. Dating back to the Qin Dynasty, the tomb is a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tomb includes thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers, chariots and horses. After the tomb visit, we will enjoy a lunch of local food like flatbread in mutton soup at a nearby restaurant. In the afternoon, we will head to the Textile Town, an art district, where we can see some local artists at work. Perhaps you might find a piece of art as a souvenir there. In the evening, we will go to the renowned food and shopping street in the city, where we will try some famous Xi’an dishes such as hot and sour dumplings and biangbiang noodles.

On the second day, we are going to take you on a tour around more historic sights of Xi’an. We will view the magnificent ancient city wall which surrounds the city centre and then make our way to the famous Bell Tower and Drum Tower. Then we will have lunch, and after that, we plan to head to the legendary Big Wild Goose Pagoda for a temple tour. The evening will include a very satisfying dinner of delicious local dishes for you to enjoy while you watch a traditional style of Chinese opera called Qinqiang Opera.
Introduce your hometown briefly.
Arrange your travel plan in time order and list all planned activities.
I hope you are excited about this two-day travel plan of Xi’an. I am sure you will enjoy its attractions, food, culture and people. I look forward to showing you around soon.
Best regards,
Mary Tang
