Miss Ma: Sure. In 1972, the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO.
Chris: But I’ve heard some people have serious doubts (1) ___________ the World Heritage Convention really helps.
Miss Ma: Sure, it does. It links the concepts of nature conservation and the preservation of cultural properties together. Apart from the Convention, the World Heritage Committee was established in 1976 and passed the motion (2) __________ we should protect our cultural and natural heritage sites.
Chris: I see. Can you tell me what the World Heritage Committee does
Miss Ma: Of course. For example, it votes to determine which sites are to be listed as UNESCO heritage sites and monitors the state of conservation.

Unit 4 Protecting our heritage sites
Welcome to the unit & Reading
Learning objectives
By the end of this period, you will be able to:
learn about three categories of heritage sites;
explain the dangers our heritage sites face and analyse the reasons;
identify the structure of the lecture transcript;
realize the importance of taking action to protect world heritage.
A concerted effort to preserve our heritage is a vital link to our cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational, and economic legacies.

Welcome to the unit
The Great Pyramid of Giza belongs to the cultural heritage sites. This tall man-made structure shows us the advanced ________________.
Yellowstone National Park is one of the natural heritage sites. It is known for ________________ and geothermal features.
Mount Huangshan, one of ________________, is famous for its breathtaking mountain scenery.
ancient architecture
its diverse wildlife
the mixed sites
Heritage is the shared wealth of mankind. Watch the video and finish the following exercises:
The heritage site that impresses me most in the video is definitely the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is simply unbelievable that people who lived thousands of years ago were able to build such a massive structure.
1. Which heritage site mentioned in the video impresses you most Why
I am familiar with several heritage sites in China, such as the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. The Forbidden City is an imperial palace complex at the heart of Beijing. It houses imperial living and governing quarters, valuable artworks, and traditional gardens. The Forbidden City took 14 years to build and had 24 emperors in residence. It hosts about 15 million visitors per year, a maximum of 80,000 visitors per day. The Great Wall is an example of awe-inspiring ancient defensive architecture. It is the longest wall in the world built in different areas by different dynasties to protect territorial borders. Its winding path over rugged country and steep mountains takes visitors through areas of some spectacular scenery. I think these two heritage sites are among the most impressive landmarks in the world and I have visited both of them.
2. What other heritage sites do you know about What are they like
Protecting heritage sites is of great significance to the sites and communities in which they are situated. Heritage sites reflect the history and culture of a place, or the people, of a particular period, so losing a site would mean losing a connection to the past. Heritage sites need to be protected as they promote local tourism and help boost a community’s or country’s economy. By protecting heritage sites together, people may improve the awareness of building a human community with a shared future.
3. What is the significance of protecting heritage sites
Reading
Some of the heritage sites face serious dangers. The lecture below is given by a UNESCO official, who explains some of these dangers. Before you read the lecture transcript, think about the following questions:
Before reading
·What historic or natural sites are there in your area
·What dangers do you think cultural and natural heritage sites are faced with
I know of the Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the biggest imperial tombs in China. It lies to the east of Nanjing at the southern foot of Purple Mountain. The tomb stands out not only because of its scale, but also for its unique design and beauty. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and Empress Ma were buried there. It is extremely popular with tourists.
What historic or natural sites are there in your area
The dangers to cultural and natural heritage sites can come from both natural forces and man-made activities. Natural elements like water and wind can erode heritage sites over time. The history and beauty that these sites have carried for thousands or even millions of years can easily be lost. While human activities also present a danger to heritage sites, such as allowing too many tourists, human inaction in taking measures to protect and preserve these sites is just as harmful.
·What dangers do you think cultural and natural heritage sites are faced with
Paras. 2–5:
(1) _____________
________________
1. Read the lecture transcript and figure out the main idea through completing the chart below.
Heritage sites face various dangers.
While reading
Para. 1: Heritage sites need protection.
Natural forces
Human activities
Long-term natural forces
(2) ____________________________
Wars
(3) ____________________________
(4) ____________________________
Para. 7: (5) ________________________________________
Heritage protection must be a combined effort.
Sudden and powerful natural forces
Flood of tourists
Widespread development
Para. 6: Such dangers can have disastrous outcomes not only for the sites, but also for people.
2. Read Para. 1 carefully and answer the following questions.
How many UNESCO heritage sites are there worldwide
What is the function of the two questions
What does the word “fighting” imply
There are currently around 1,100 sites.
On the one hand, the word “fighting” emphasizes the urgency of action needed to preserve the sites. On the other hand, it implies it is not an easy task to preserve the sites. We need to “fight” hard to achieve this goal.
The two questions are employed to arouse the reader’s interest by connecting the content of the lecture with the reader’s personal experiences. In this way, the lecturer naturally introduces the topic of the lecture.
Read Para. 2 carefully and fill in the blanks.
146.59 meters

136.5 meters
The Great Pyramid of Giza was worn down by ________, ________, and ____________ gradually and now become ________ than before.
The city of Bam locates in ______ and was ______ by an _________ in 2003.

Iran
ruined
earthquake
How do wars threaten heritage sites
Wars can cause damage to ancient clay sculptures and buildings.
What does the lecturer want to show by using the word “even”
By using the word “even”, the lecturer shows how absurd and shocking the behaviour of the fighters is when they destroy heritage sites on purpose.
Read Para. 3 carefully and answer the following questions.
What activity is causing damage to the temples of Angkor
Thousands of tourists climbing up the narrow stone steps every day.
Read Para. 4 carefully and answer the following question.
Why is the Historic Centre of Vienna on the List of World Heritage in Danger
Because of high-rise construction projects in central Vienna.
Read Para. 5 carefully and answer the following question.
Read Para. 6 carefully and answer the following questions.
What causes the loss of the coral on the Great Barrier Reef
High seawater temperatures caused by global warming.
What will happen if the Great Barrier Reef is lost
If the reef is lost, many people will lose their jobs. The local economy will surely suffer from it, as it helps boost tourism and fishing in the local area. What’s more, the reef also helps protect the coastline against waves and floods. If it disappears, many people’s lives and possibly even their homes will suffer greatly.
Main points Examples
Heritage sites can be gradually worn down by the long-term natural forces like wind, water and temperature.
Large parts of the city of Bam were ruined in an earthquake.
3. Fill in the table below by focusing on the main points and examples.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is several metres shorter than it was originally.
Heritage sites can be destroyed by natural disasters.
Main points Examples
The flood of tourists may cause damage to heritage sites.
The Historic Centre of Vienna is now on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to high-rise construction projects.
Such dangers can have disastrous outcomes not only for the sites themselves, but also for people.
Every day, thousands of tourists climbing up the narrow stone steps are wearing down the temples of Angkor and could cause irreparable destruction of the internal structure.
Widespread development puts cultural and natural heritage sites in danger.
Loss of the Great Barrier Reef may influence economy in the local area and make people lose their jobs. Moreover, the coastline lacks protection.
1. The lecturer mentions examples of heritage sites facing dangers. Can you think of more examples
Natural disasters
Everglades National Park is a natural heritage site in Florida, USA. Every year, destructive hurricanes damage or destroy the vulnerable wetlands that are home to a huge diversity of unique wildlife.
After reading
Tourist damage
The world-famous Stonehenge in the UK is one of the most impressive prehistoric stone monuments in the world because of the size and shape of its stones, and its architectural design. It draws over 800,000 tourists annually. They have caused some damage to the prehistoric stones by chipping away at them.
Wars
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, armed conflict catches the wildlife in the crossfire and some rare species are endangered. The world’s smallest population of mountain gorillas, which could become extinct in the near future due to other threats, sometimes also die in the war.
2. At the end of the lecture, what questions would you like to ask the lecturer
I would ask the following questions:
How can countries where natural disasters occur frequently plan ahead to reduce the risks of their heritage sites getting damaged
Apart from relying on UNESCO and other authorities to protect heritage sites, what action can individuals take to help protect them
What efforts have been made to protect heritage sites

Texts that flow smoothly are more elegant and also easier to understand. We can connect the ideas of two paragraphs with a transitional sentence—a sentence that serves as a bridge between the two paragraphs.
Learn this
5. The lecture transcript uses some transitional sentences. Find these in the lecture transcript and try to replace them with your own transitional sentences.
Let’s look at some specific issues.
Perhaps we should discuss these particular problems in more detail.
Another big danger is human activities.
As well as natural forces, human activities present an additional danger to heritage sites.
Meanwhile, World Heritage status may give rise to a series of problems.
At the same time, World Heritage status is likely to result in a series
of problems.
Such dangers can have disastrous outcomes not only for the sites themselves, but also for people.
On the one hand, such dangers can have disastrous consequences for the sites themselves, and on the other hand for people too.

Galapagos Islands
Location
In the Pacific Ocean, on both sides of the equator
History
The islands were discovered in 1535 and became part of Ecuador in 1832.
In 1835, Charles Darwin visited the islands. His research there led to the groundbreaking theory of evolution by natural selection.
In 1978, UNESCO listed the Galápagos Islands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, describing them as a unique "living museum and showcase of evolution".
Importance
Because the islands are so far from any other land mass, and they are also located at the meeting point of three Ocean currents, they are home to many unusual plants and animals that do not live elsewhere on the planet.
Threats
Human activities such as overfishing upset the habitat and behaviour of the local animals.
Invasive species threaten the unique ecosystem of the islands.
Protection measures
The government has introduced a special entry fee for tourists.
The introduction of non-native species is banned.
Look at the UNESCO website and
participate in any way we can to
protect and preserve heritage sites.
As a group, put together your information to make a poster. Then present your poster to the rest of the class.

Because the incredible splendour of heritage sites is a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of man.
3. How do you understand the quote from Cicero
From my point of view, Cicero’s quote means that knowing about our past helps us understand the present and the future better. If we were ignorant of our past, our knowledge about cultural and natural environments would be lacking. We would lose vital information that could help us become better by not repeating past mistakes. We would also not appreciate all the efforts and struggles of the people that came before us.

Host: Hello! On today’s show we’re talking about ways to protect our cultural and natural heritage sites. I’m here with an expert in the field of heritage protection. Welcome to our show, Mr Li. In my opinion, making laws is a good way to protect the heritage sites at the national level. What ideas do you have for protecting the world’s heritage sites
Mr Li: Hi, and thank you for having me here today. I think one important measure we can take is to limit the number of tourists to our heritage sites. This way, it’ll be easier to preserve them for future generations.
Host: Thank you for that, Mr Li. When you mention limiting the number of tourists, what’s your suggestion
Mr Li: Online booking can help deal with massive tourism at the site level. We’ll only allow tickets to be purchased in advance through an app or on the website.
Host: What else can we do to limit the number of tourists
Tapescript
Mr Li: We can set strict time limits on how long tourists can spend visiting the heritage sites on a daily basis.
Host: It seems to me that limits alone won’t be enough to ensure the safety of these sites. Would you agree
Mr Li: Absolutely. We also need a lot of resources. If we want to restore damaged sites, we need money and equipment. We also need scientists and engineers, as well as experts in many other fields. A big part of my job is to raise funds for our local heritage projects.
Host: Anything else
Mr Li: Another critical step is to educate the general public about the importance of heritage sites. For example, this could involve launching campaigns, setting up websites and giving out leaflets. We can also give advice to local officials on how to manage them properly. Every little thing helps!
In pairs, discuss the protection of heritage sites. Use the following ideas to help you.
C
Your discussion can focus on:
The importance of protecting heritage sites
Methods of protection
Discussing
Moving on to another topic
When too much time has been spent on a topic, or your partner has nothing more to say about a topic, you can move on to another topic.
e.g.
I think we’ve talked enough about this point. Maybe we could move on to ...
I think there’s nothing more to talk about this aspect. Let’s change the topic to ...
Tip
A: Let’s discuss the importance of protecting heritage sites first. I think heritage sites are a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of man.
B: Absolutely right. Natural heritage sites amaze us with their splendour and command our respect for nature, and cultural heritage sites can connect us with the past.
A: Yes. I think we’ve talked enough about this point. Maybe we could move on to discussing some useful measures.
B: OK. In my opinion, even if UNESCO does declare a place as a heritage site, it offers little protection especially if local communities do not take ownership to preserve their heritage.
A: I agree with you. Local communities should take some measures. For instance, limiting the number of visitors to these sites and regulating how often or how long they’re open to visitors are the first step in the right direction. Can you add anything
Example
B: Yes, I can. Activities like fundraising events can help contribute towards resources required to carry out any restoration and preservation projects.
A: I definitely agree! I’m also thinking how little is being done to educate the general public about their importance. The public might be unaware of the dangers that heritage sites are facing. We need to ensure everyone becomes a part of the solution rather than the problem.
B: Yes, but let’s change the topic to what effective methods can raise public awareness. I think one is to launch awareness campaigns about the dangers to these vulnerable sites and also how to prevent those dangers. Do you have any other ideas
A: Yes, I do. Most people use the Internet nowadays, so it’ll be extremely helpful to set up easily accessible and informative websites about the topic.
B: That’s a great idea. I know that if we all work together to take care of our heritage sites, future generations will get to enjoy them too.
To write an article calling for the protection of heritage sites, you can follow the structure below:
State the importance of the protection of heritage sites.
Give your ideas on how to protect our heritage sites.
Sum up the main points and call on people to take action.

A link to the past
Heritage sites are a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of man. Natural heritage sites amaze us with their splendour and command our respect for nature. Cultural heritage sites can connect us with the past. They remind us of our achievements and link us to the great story of human history. Preserving our heritage sites allows us to appreciate the past and to find inspiration for the future.
In order to preserve heritage sites successfully, we could put in place some of the following measures. First, we should limit the number of visitors to heritage sites and regulate how often or how long the sites are open to visitors. This measure may help reduce the damage that might be caused due to uncontrolled tourist flow. This measure is possible if tickets for the sites need to be purchased or booked in advance. In this way, the site authorities can keep a watchful eye on the sites and manage them better. Second, we need

to invest more money in the projects about the restoration and preservation of local heritage to help maintain project resources such as essential equipment. Last but not least, we have to educate the general public about the importance of heritage sites, the dangers they face and the methods to protect them. Effective ways to do this could include launching awareness campaigns and setting up informative websites. The public might be unaware of the dangers that heritage sites are facing, so making this information available to them will encourage them to become a part of the solution rather than the problem.
In conclusion, every heritage site is unique and has a special cultural or physical significance. Humans are the guardians of these irreplaceable treasures, so it is in the interest of our legacy to do our job with pride. I hope that we can all work together to take care of our heritage sites and preserve them so that future generations can look back at us in admiration for a job well done. Our world will be all the richer for it.
