Hussam Al-Attar, a 15-year-old boy in Gaza, is able to build a device to provide electricity for the lamps of the tent he is staying in with his family.
Al-Attar got two fans at a resale market and used them to create small wind turbines (涡轮) to produce electricity. His invention led others in the camp where he stayed to start calling him the “Newton of Gaza”. That comparison involves the English scientist, Isaac Newton. Newton is known for his major scientific discoveries in the fields of physics, mathematics and astronomy more than 300 years ago. A famous story about Newton describes how an apple falling on his head led him to discover the nature of gravity.
Al-Attar and his family are staying in a tent that is partly attached to a house. He was able to climb onto the roof to set up two fans, one above the other. The wind could turn the fans, which produced small amounts of electricity. He then connected the fans to wires and built a charging station. Al-Attar also built switches to control a lighting system made out of wood.
Al-Attar’s first two attempts failed, and it took him a lot of time to develop a working system. He started developing it further, bit by bit, until he was able to extend the wires through the room to the tent, so that the tent would have light. He was happy to be able to create something to help ease “the suffering” of his family members. Now, he is just looking forward to the future when conditions can improve in Gaza.
“I am very happy that people in this camp call me the ‘Newton of Gaza’,” Al-Attar said. “Because I hope to achieve my dream of becoming a scientist like Newton and creating an invention that will benefit not only the people of the Gaza Strip, but the whole world.”
24.Why did Al-Attar buy two second-hand fans
A.To light his tent. B.To cool his home.
C.To challenge Newton. D.To learn to repair a device.
25.Which of the following did Al-Attar use to power his invention
A.Sunlight. B.Electricity. C.Burning wood. D.Flowing air.
26.What can we learn from Al-Attar’s devotion to his invention
A.Personal ability is boundless. B.Patience is the key to success.
C.Family support determines success. D.Failure tends to discourage motivation.
27.What did Al-Attar mainly convey in the last paragraph
A.His future goal. B.His great achievements.
C.The benefits of his camp. D.The hardship of his creation.

In winter, we often use large amounts of salt to remove dangerous ice from roads and walkways. But when the spring arrives, all that salt can really damage plants along the way. Salt is the chemical sodium chloride.
Salt pulls water from living cells, like plant roots and the healthy ground soil around them. So, spring growth may show up lighter in color than normal, or, in the worst cases, plants may simply die. Rain can wash away much of the salt, permitting some older plants to live. But overusing it unavoidably brings great damage to plants.
There are, of course, other things that can be used in place of sodium chloride. One is the chemical calcium chloride, which does less damage to plants. Calcium chloride can quickly change the melting (融化) point of ice and absorb water, making a much quicker acting agent. It also works when the temperature is below negative 17 degrees Celsius. Salt only keeps its effectiveness at temperatures above negative 12 degrees Celsius. Yet, it’s more expensive and can do more damage to cars.
Calcium magnesium acetate, also called CMA, is a more popular alternative than salt and calcium chloride. It is made by combining limestone, a type of rock, and vinegar. It breaks down naturally so it does not damage plants or soil. It stays on roads and does not hurt cars. CMA does have problems, however. It is most effective at around negative 9 degrees Celsius. And it is better at stopping ice from forming rather than removing it.
Some materials-such as sand or very small pieces of wood-can also work against ice. They might be very messy, but in the interests of plants grown in the ground near a road or where a car is parked, all of them could be a better choice than salt.
28.What advantage does calcium chloride have over salt
A.It pulls little water from plants. B.It can melt ice in a shorter time.
C.It has no bad effect on plants. D.It works at higher temperature.
29.What should we do when using CMA
A.Break it into small pieces.
B.Use it before water or snow freezes.
C.Combine it with rock and vinegar.
D.Remove it from roads after use.
30.How does the author develop the text
A.By using data. B.By raising doubt. C.By drawing comparisons. D.By explaining principles.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Salt Does More Harm than Good B.Vary Ways to Clear Ice with Conditions
C.Ice Removal Could Damage Plants D.To Help Plants, Use Less Salt
D
To figure out if we can die of boredom, we first have to understand what boredom is. For help, I called James Danckert, a psychologist who studies boredom at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “A lot of people think about being bored as being lazy. And it’s absolutely not that,” he says. “Bored people want to be engaged with their world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing.”
That means boredom is usually very upsetting. And it can have physical consequences. In one of his experiments, Danckert made people extremely bored by showing them a video of two people hanging clothes to dry. He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad. These physical changes were signs that boredom was stressing them out. “It’s not like having a full-on panic attack,”Danckert says. But it’s certainly enough to make boredom unpleasant.
Let’s come back to if boredom can kill you. Back in the 1980s, scientists asked people who worked for the British government a whole bunch of questions, including how bored they felt in their daily lives. The study tracked the participants over time. When any one of them died, the survey recorded the cause of death. In 2010, two researchers matched up these causes of death with the participants’ level of boredom. It turned out that people who said they were more bored were also more likely to have died of heart disease. “We know that prolonged exposure to stress is bad for your health,” Danckert says. A single boring day can’t kill you. But if you’re always bored, the stress could add up into something dangerous.
“Oh no,” you might be thinking. “School is boring, my friends are boring, everything is boring! What’s going to happen to me ” Don’t worry, Danckert says, “As you get older, you get less bored,” mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. And trust me: that’s anything but boring.
32.According to James Danckert, people feel bored because ______.
A.they are too lazy to do anything B.they can’t fully understand boredom
C.they are too frightened to have a try D.they can’t gain excitement in life
33.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.Doing housework will make people bored.
B.Physical changes can lead to extreme boredom.
C.People’s heart rate increases with boredom.
D.Watching something sad is a boring experience.
34.What does the underlined word “prolonged” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Continued. B.Short. C.Sudden. D.Active.
35.What does Danckert recommend to save people from boredom
A.Depending on friends. B.Setting long-term goals.
C.Keeping yourself occupied. D.Trusting people around you.

Four Tips to Improve Your English Vocabulary
Learning vocabulary is a big part of learning a language. The more English words you learn, the better you can communicate your needs, ideas, thoughts and feelings to others in English. 36 Here are four tips for better vocabulary learning.
●Write down new words.
It’s a really good idea to write down useful new vocabulary. 37 Plus, lots of people learn better when they see things written on paper, rather than just hearing them.
●Revise new vocabulary regularly.
So, you’ve got an English notebook full of useful vocabulary to remember. But did you know that if you don’t look again at the new words and phrases, you only remember on average 20-25 percent of them 38
So make five minutes each day to revise your English vocabulary. The more you look backwards, the faster you go forwards!
●Learn from context.
“Context” means the text that comes before and after a particular word. 39 It helps you guess the meaning of words you don’t know, it shows you how a word is used in a sentence, and it helps you remember the word for longer.
This means learning vocabulary by reading and listening is more effective than trying to study word lists. It also means that it’s better to make a note of how a word is used in a sentence rather than just the word on its own.
● 40
Researchers have found that you need to see or hear a word on average ten times to remember it. But you learn it much faster when you’re actively using a word.
So, besides getting as much exposure to English as you can, take every opportunity to communicate in English with other people.
A.Use it or lose it!
B.See or hear a word more times.
C.New words are usually hard to remember.
D.That’s a shocking waste of time and effort!
E.It also refers to the situation in which a word is used.
F.The act of writing the words helps you remember them better.
G.So what can you do to build your English vocabulary quickly and effectively

My daughter loved dancing until she didn’t find it attractive. After an 41 first year, I noticed her interest fading week by week. Then one day, she slowly walked to me before class and asked if she could just 42 it.
My first reaction was to advise her to “finish what you start”. 43 , sticking with something difficult can teach perseverance, discipline and confidence. But watching mydaughter 44 herself into each ballet position, I started to question how much 45 that “blanket advice” made. After a few days’ consideration, she decided dance wasn’t for her - a choice I 49 . Quitting is never a black and white issue. Sometimes, it means 50 a barrier in your way to love something else. In my daughter’s case, ending dance made space for her new hobbies, such as horseback riding and Girl Scouts. She’s into them for now, but it is okay if that 51 changes.
As adults, we are used to 52 the power of saying yes, but what about saying no The ability to recognize when something isn’t an 53 investment of our time or energy is also important. As my daughter gets older, I want her to feel confident to 54 something that’s no longer meeting her needs. She shouldn’t be held back by the thought that she must finish something at any cost 55 because she has started.

I was working and living in Switzerland for a few years. My big hobby then was windsurfing on the big lakes nearby. Unfortunately, to get wind in the mountains, you often needed to wait for a storm to pass by.
Late one afternoon. I was out windsurfing with about ten other friends on just such a day when it started getting really windy, too much to handle. I thought about heading in, as I was about a mile offshore on this big lake. But then the sirens(警报器)on the shore started sounding and flashing that a major storm was headed our way. About half the guys made it to the beach while those remaining. including me, hung onto our boards in the water trying to swim to shore. It started getting dark quickly and the wind blew even harder. This storm was going to be a big one.
A rescue boat was sent out from a nearby harbor ad luckily managed to drag everyone except me back to shore. I was a little further out than the others and all my waving and screaming was now lost in the roaring wind. I was beginning to panic while I helplessly looked on and watched the rescue boat getting stuck by breaking waves while looking for me. My friends onshore knew I was out there and were doing everything they could to help find me.
It was now dark and I was being blown further offshore than ever. I eventually saw the search lights go out on the rescue boat and head back in to the harbor as it was too dangerous to continue. They had given up the search for me. I was now all alone, The storm was getting stronger and the board started flipping(迅速翻动)across the white water by itself as I desperately tried to hold to it.
Then it happened. A wave of relief came over me. as I realized there was no one left to help me. I could only rely on myself. I had to be the rescuer, not the victim.

67. One Possible Version:
My thoughts immediately turned to what needed to be done. As I
was holding to the board more firmly, “I must swim to shore on
my own. And I can do it.” I talked to myself. Anxiously, I
looked around and made a quick judgement that it was more
easily for me to get to the other side since I had been blown
further from the side where I started. As soon as I made the
decision, I began to spare no efforts to swim the opposite. The
storm was still strong and so was my will to struggle with and
survive it.
Hours later, tired and cold. I made it to the other side and saw
the light of a farm house. Without any hesitation, I headed to the
house and knocked at the door. Though a little surprised, the
owner allowed me to have a rest and warm myself in her house
friendly after I told her what had just happened to me. Two
hours later, the rescue staff arrived when the storm went by.
They sent me back with their boat which I was so thankful for.
When we were approaching the shore, I saw all my friends still
waiting for me there. I felt so excited and moved.

M: I used to want to try every sport. I think it's good to empty
my mind. But now I need time to relax.
W: You don't need to be busy all the time. Getting out of the
house for a walk helps you relax sometimes.
Text 2:
W: What role do you play in the school play
M: I'm the main character's father. The director said my
character should have long curly hair, so I have to put that on.
W: Ah, I'm sure your short dark hair will look just as good
Text 3:
W: Wow. Brady, your aquarium looks so beautiful! How long
have you had it
M: I have had this for 8 months. My new fish are so cute, right
W: Yes. You've taken care of them so well. You must love them
a lot.
Text 4:
W: Do you know the boy who has on absolute passion for

which he painted designs on.
Text 5:
W: How about taking a car to the cinema
M: Let's take a bus. It is not possible to travel by car during rush
hours and going by bus is cheaper than traveling by car.
Text 6:
M: Were you off hiking this weekend
W: Yeah. I found it very relaxing.
M: I've just joined a hiking group. I know so little about the
surrounding area, despite having lived here for several years.
I've heard some of the hills around here can be pretty hard to
climb. But I'm sure the exercise won't do me any harm.
W: And there are some fantastic views.
M: Hmm... The truth is that I'm afraid of heights. I'm hoping this
will cure me of that. To be honest, that's my main motivation for
giving it a go.

Text 7:
M: Shall we check some foreign currency from the bank for our
trip
W: We can do it at the airport.
M: But we may get poor exchange rates there. I'll check it out on
the internet. I've bought one of these money belts so I can put
my money in it.
W: I'd like to use one of those. I prefer a money belt to a bag.
Let's not change too much money. We can always get more cash
when we get there.
M: But we're not going to be near many towns and we don't
want to run out of money. We'd better have a bit extra.
Text 8:
W: That was a fascinating lecture. Don't you think, Jack
M: You’re right. I’d heard that Mr. Brandy was brilliant from
some students he taught last year, so I was expecting it quite a
lot.
W: Really I hadn’t heard anything about him before. Anyway, I
never imagined anyone choosing such a meaningful topic.
M: I just wished I’d read a bit more about that period in history
in advance. I think I’d have got a bit more out of it if I had.

W: Me too. It was a pity he didn’t include some reference books
on the material he gave us.
M: Oh, well, it won’t be hard to find something relevant. Let’s
go to the library and find some.
W: Good idea.
Text 9:
M: That was a really interesting article the tutor recommended
about Ellen Ochoa for our science coursework, wasn’t it
W: It certainly was. I used to dream of going into space when I
was a kid. I found it particularly interesting to read about a
spacewoman. There aren’t too many of those around.
M: You’re right! I’m sure they are as able as men to deal with all
the challenges of the job. Ellen was special. She overcame all
the difficulties with her determination to do what she’d wanted
to do ever since she was small.
W: Absolutely. That’s why I admire her. The article also shows
the requirements for becoming an astronaut. It’s not surprising
that they want people who are good at sport and have
corresponding flight experience. But I’ve never imagined that
you need to have a graduate degree.
M: Yes. To achieve our dream, we must try our best to be
{#{QQABAYiQggCIQJBAARhCQQmQCAGQkBGACAoGwBAAsAABSQFABAA=}#}
qualified enough. Anyway, living in space must be interesting.
W: Yes. Imagine walking in space and having to work inside and
outside the capsule when you’re weightless! That’s
extraordinary. I think the most interesting thing would be having
to get used to the living habits there and deal with all the
unexpected problems that arise.
Text 10:
W/M: Today, I’ll talk about an English Literature Course. On the
whole, I found it an extremely valuable addition to the other
courses offered by the Language Department in my college.
What I appreciated most about this course was its content. It
dealt not only with the novel but also with poetry and drama.
And it covered writers from a wide range of countries. The
lecturer provided us with some useful reference books and many
suggestions as to how to deal with the issues we had been
discussing. In my opinion, the course had only one weakness.
Lecture Hall 1 where it was held was not big enough for such a
popular course. It goes without saying that I would recommend
that the course take place in the college’s largest lecture hall -
Lecture Hall 3 in future. However, I would also recommend that
the course tutors make better use of the department’s website.
{#{QQABAYiQggCIQJBAARhCQQmQCAGQkBGACAoGwBAAsAABSQFABAA=}#}
For example, the department's website can be used for further
discussion of some issues raised by the listeners.
