“My ocean is my life.” These are the powerful words of Andre Miller, a marine（海洋的）scientist. He is also the owner of a div e shop that places heavy upon the exploration and protection of his hometown’s waters.
As a young child, Andre would be fascinated by stories of the sea told by his dad who was a fisherman. When he was six years old, his mum gave him his first equipment of diving. Then, Andre spent his time diving. Andre interned（实习）at a div e shop. With this training, the young diver was able to see new depths. But unfortunately, he saw much damage.
After finishing his studies in marine biology, Andre got to work as a member of the Coastal Zone Management Unit. It was here that once again he was horrified by the rapid decrease of the numbers of sea creatures and the negative effects of poor boating practices which caused havoc to the island’s coral（珊瑚）. Therefore, the first mission of Andre’s team was to repair destroyed reefs and save coral. And they have been very successful in their efforts.
One of Andre’s perfect moments was his role in the creation of the Carlisle Bay Marine Park. The park has now become the premier（首位的）dive site in his hometown. Andre describes it as “the best textbook example of how marine parks can benefit the islands”.
In 2016, Andre further promised his support of the protection of Carlisle Bay through his work with other projects. Through their work, Andre’s hometown has seen an increase in underwater clean-ups, which has made mar ine life increase greatly. “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.”But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smartphones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices（设备）in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.” Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105children who spend about 4.5hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smartphones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction,” saidProfessor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2—16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: their children could use a tablet（平板电脑）（59%）and work a mobile phone（57%）more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces（鞋带）（53%）! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.

A skilled digital artist is using virtual reality to bring Scotland’s lost built heritage back to life with a series of interactive videos showing urban environments as they looked more than a century ago.
Over the past couple of years, Ian Young, from Paisley, has spent untold numbers of hours recreating fully-detailed bygone 3D views of his hometown Paisley and, more recently, Glasgow.
In Mr Young’s latest published effort, a 360 degree view of Glasgow’s St Enoch Square of the year 1900, the viewer is treated to a chance to be immersed（沉浸）in the square’s many lost public buildings.
Most notable perhaps is the multi-leveled building of the St Enoch Railway Station Hotel. Constructed in 1875, the grand hotel was taken down a little over a century later to eventually make way for the St Enoch shopping centre, which remains a pity among those who can recall it.
Occupying the centre of the 3D view, the St Enoch subway station, which still exists today, serves as a helpful reference point within the much-changed urban environment.
To perfect his architectural recreations, which can take weeks and even months to create, Mr Young has also gone to the bother of recreating early Glasgow single-decker tramcars（单层电车）, further adding to the sense of realism. In the future, he plans to include horses and carts and passersby dressed in the clothes of the time.
“St Enoch Square is an enclosed area, perfect for a 360 degree movie,” explains Mr Young. “I never knew there had been a hotel there and that really inspired me, as I realized a lot of others wouldn’t know about it either.”
With a degree in computer animation and experience working as a full-time architectural modeller in Australia, Mr Young says his ultimate dream is to work with National Museums of Scotland and use his creations to help educate the masses, an attempt which has been turned down by the official. “I don’t understand.” added Mr Young. “It’s simply about recreating streets, buildings that are now long gone. If the technology’s there, then why aren’t we using it ”

Look at any ship and you will see a line painted on the side.（18）The line is known as the Plimsoll Line. It is named after a 19th century British lawmaker, Samuel Plimsoll.（19）In 1870, Plimsoll looked at the safety of ships and found the problem worse than he expected. Owners were putting too many things on their ships, making them dangerous for the people who worked on them. Many sailors refused to go to sea because they were worried for their safety. Ships from Venice were protected by the lines as long ago as the 12th century,（20）but it was not until the 19th century that they became law, thanks to Samuel Plimsoll. In 1894, the position of the line was fixed by law. It is painted on the side of ships, and the water level isn’t supposed to go above the line. The basic sign, of a circle with a line passing through its center, is now recognized worldwide.
