Now, Earth Day is celebrated around the world. We still face many challenges, such as climate change, plastic pollution, and deforestation. But we can all make a difference.
Her Trees Save Lives
Adeline Tiffanie Suwana was 12 when her family’s home flooded. Indonesia, her island nation, is often hit hard by floods and other natural disasters.
Adeline learned that mangrove trees play a key role in flood protection and rallied classmates to plant 200 trees during a school break. They started a group called Sahabat Alam or Friends of Nature, which works to conserve the region’s biodiversity and combat climate change.
Today. Adeline attends university, studying how businesses can help the environment.
Teens’ Two-Fold Invention
EPS—expanded polystyrene foam—is the white, lightweight stuff used to make things like takeout food containers, foam egg cartons, and packing “peanuts” . But it takes up a lot of space and is difficult to recycle. EPS breaks into small pieces as it floats down waterways into oceans, harming wildlife along the way.
Eighth-graders Julia Bray, Luke Clay, and Ashton Cofer looked at EPS’s chemical makeup and saw that it was mostly carbon. That sparked an idea. Could they turn it into activated carbon, a material that filters toxins from water
After 50 hours of experiments, including one that accidentally set the family grill fire, they succeeded!
Solar for Her School
When Claire Vlases of Montana was in seventh grade, she learned about plans to expand and modernize her middle school. Claire asked the school board to add solar panels to the project. The board liked the idea but said it could contribute just $25,000, one-fifth of the cost. So Claire organized a group of kids and adults who set to work raising the rest.
They asked for donations, even going door-to-door for them. And they appealed to charitable foundations too. One even donated half the cost!
After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now supply one-fourth of the school’s electricity needs.

In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his wife Helen, he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he missed the classroom, so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students’ Education (VISE), which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. “The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeterboard (跷跷板) act,” he explains. “A big guy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls (旋转) and land on his uncle’s shoulders, and his uncle was standing on the boy’s father’s shoulders!”
The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs. John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.
24 .What can we know about the children in the Stardust Circus
A .They missed the classroom.
B .Most of them lived downtown.
C .They were dreaming of travelling.
D .They were lacking in regular schooling.
25 .What can we learn from the passage

D .The couple were fed up with the sound of lions roaring.
26 .How did John probably feel after meeting the little lions
A .Scared. B .Excited. C .Calm. D .Regretful.
27 .What is the best title for the text
A .Running with Circus B .Missing Regular School
C .Enjoying Retirement D .Travelling with Animals

Scientists find when tiny plastics end up in farm fields, the pollution can impair plant growth. But two young
researchers now report that combining fungi ( 真菌) with certain farm wastes can partially overcome that problem. May Shin, 20, and Jiwon Choi, 18, presented their discovery at the 2023 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair(ISEF).
The pair met in a research design class at the Fryeburg Academy, a high school in Maine. May had wanted to explore how microplastics might affect the ecosystem. Jiwon was fascinated by plants and fungi. The young scientists shared their interests, May says, to test how long-lived plastics might affect farm crops—and how to limit any harm.
May and Jiwon planted more than 2,000 scallion ( 韭葱) seeds in pots of soil. Half the seeds got soil polluted with microplastics. The rest grew in plastic-free soil. The plants assigned to each soil were further divided into four groups. The young scientists added certain microscopic fungi to the soil in one group. Another group had a top layer of farm wastes. A third group got both treatments. The last group got none. For three weeks, the pair tracked how many scallions sprouted (萌 芽) in each group and measured the plants’ height once each week.
About twice as many scallions sprouted in clean soil compared to that containing plastic bits. But among plants surviving in the polluted soil, a combination of microscopic fungi and farm wastes helped them out. Those getting both treatments grew 5.4 centimeters(about 2 inches)per week. That was faster than either of the treatments alone or those getting none. It was slower, however, than scallions planted in clean soil. They grew 7.2 centimeters(2.8 inches)per week.
In the future, the two young scientists hope to continue testing microscopic fungi and farm wastes under other conditions. Their goal is to see how other factors might change the plants’ response to the soil treatments.
28 .What can we learn about May and Jiwon from the first two paragraphs
A .They met in a college.
B .They grow fungi at home.
C .They like to collect farm wastes.
D .They worked together harmoniously.
29 .Why did the writer give detailed description to the test in paragraph 3
A .To examine the different plants.
B .To build a scientific model.
C .To show the reliability of the test.
D .To arouse the readers’ interest.
30 .What can be found from the result of the test
A .Farm wastes help sprout most in polluted soil.
B .Microscopic fungi helps sprout most in polluted soil.
C .Scallions sprout better in clean soil than in polluted soil.
D .Plants grow better in polluted soil with wastes than in clean soil.
31 .What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A .The two scientists are determined.
B .There are many ways to treat soils.
C .Farm wastes will be more valuable.
D .Microscopic fungi will be widely used.
D
“Few articles change owners more frequently than clothes. They travel downwards from grade to grade in the social scale with remarkable regularity,” wrote the journalist Adolphe Smith in 1877 as he traced a coat’s journey in the last century: cleaned, repaired and resold repeatedly; cut down into a smaller item; eventually recycled into new fabric. But with the improvement in people’s living standards, that model is mind-boggling in the era of fast fashion. The average British customer buys four items a month. And it is reported that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothes go to landfills in the UK each year.
Yet the gradual revival of the second-hand trade has gathered pace in the past few years. At fashion website Asos, sales of vintage clothes (古董衫) have risen by 92%. Clothing was once worn out of necessity, and now it is simply a way of life. Busy families sell used items on eBay, teenagers trade on Depop and some fashion people offer designer labels on Vestiaire Collective. Strikingly, it has become big enough business that mainstream retailers (零售商) want a slice of the action.
For some buyers and sellers, the switch to the second-hand is born of financial difficulties. Only a few have become worried about the impact of their shopping habit on the planet. But the shift is only a partial solution. Some people worry that some mainstream brands may “greenwash” — using second-hand goods to improve their image, rather than engaging more seriously with sustainability.
However, the biggest concern may be that people keep buying because they know they can resell goods, still chasing
the pleasure of the next purchase but with an eased conscience (愧疚). Boohoo, a powerful fast fashion company, has seen sales and profits rise, despite concerns about environmental problems in its supply chain that led to an investigation last year.
A new Netflix series, Worn Stories, documents the emotional meanings that clothes can have: Each old item is full of memories. Actually, a handbag from a grandmother and a scarf passed on by a father are both valuable for us. A love of style is not a bad or an unimportant thing. But a committed relationship is better than a quick flash. Can we learn to appreciate our own old clothes as well as others’
32 .What does the word “mind-boggling” underlined in paragraph 1 probably mean
A .Unbelievable. B .Popular. C .Reasonable. D .Influential.
33 .With the business mentioned in paragraph 2, the author wants to show .
A .old clothes are more popular than new pieces
B .the online second-hand markets are booming
C .the fashion world begins to favor vintage clothes
D .many clothing brands are innovative in their new products
34 .How does the second-hand trade impact people according to paragraph 4
A .It makes people feel free to pursue fast fashion.
B .It makes people more cautious about their budgets. C .It encourages people to choose eco-friendly clothes.
D .It pushes people to be more engaged with sustainability. 35 .Which of the following views does Worn Stories advocate
A .Old items have lost favor with the public.
B .Old items are worthy of being long cherished.
C .Older generations attach great importance to old items.
D .Older generations care about the quality of their clothes. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)

How to master tricky conversations at work
Many of us struggle to say what we need to at work. Whether it’s asking for a pay rise or facing a co-worker over their behaviour, these conversations can be difficult to have without the other person getting angry. 36 . Here’s my tips on how to tackle your next difficult conversation.
Plan
First, you need to plan what you’re going to say. 37 . Write down what you want out of the conversation and be clear on what you want to happen as a result. For example, you may decide: “I want to get an agreement on deadlines for this project and a clear outline of who will be responsible for each task.”
Prepare
The second thing you need to do is write down the key messages you want to get across in the conversation. 38 . Remember to speak slowly, breathe. If you are particularly nervous, rehearse (排练) what you plan to say in front
of a friend so you know you are coming across as you wish to.
Be empathetic
Finally, put yourself in the other person’s shoes — however annoying that person might be. The useless boss who never gives you feedback is simply struggling with her own workload. 39 , the more we can plan how to work with them towards a successful outcome.
When you have the conversation, don’t get blind-sided by fast talkers. If the person you’re speaking to starts to avoid blame or your questioning, ask them what their part is in all of this and what they can take responsibility for. 40 . And finally, if you feel under pressure, remember to respond slowly rather than reacting quickly.
A .Practise saying them out loud
B .Start with the end result in mind
C .The language you use is also important
D .The more careful you’re with the language you use
E .The more we can understand the other person’s worldview
F .To manage your emotions during a difficult conversation, breathe deeply
G .But not being able to have “that conversation” can hold you back in your career 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分)

We moved to our new place, and everything was new and unfamiliar. I didn’t have new friends, so most of the time when I was free at home, I stayed with Socky, my cat and friend. One morning in winter, it was very cold outside and people mainly stayed indoors to keep warm. Before going off to my high school in Ouyen, Victoria, I called our pregnant( 怀孕的) cat to be fed, but she didn’t come. I thought she’d probably found somewhere to have her kittens and would turn up later. But she didn’t.
When Socky still didn’t come at dinnertime, I anxiously asked my mum, “Where is Socky ” But she didn’t know either. The next day, Socky still didn’t appear and I really started to worry. Socky had kept me company for years, and she was just like my family member.
Socky had given birth to some lovely kittens before. She had a habit of having her kittens in strange places, so first I checked all her hidey-holes where she used to stay but she wasn’t in any of them. I became extremely anxious. What could
have happened “Where are you, dear Socky ” Having waited for hours again, I couldn’t sit still. The next day was Saturday and I had the whole day to search for her. Thinking over all the possible places where she could shelter herself, I rechecked under the house, then in the garage under and behind old books, every place I could think of, but still no Socky.
After lunch I took some food scraps(剩饭) with me in case I found her, then began searching the back shed, which was huge and filled with cardboard boxes full of junk and empty tea-chests(茶叶箱). After about an hour of moving cardboard boxes from one place to another and back again, I was tired out. I sat down on an upturned tea-chest to have a rest when I heard faint mewing(喵). I put my head up against each of the tea-chests, pressing my ear against the plywood(夹板) so I could catch the faint sounds. I had to move each one carefully before I could look inside.
注意:
1 .续写词数应为 150 左右;
2 .请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, I found Socky and her three tiny kittens.

W: Yeah, I’ve already made some shapes to put on. Look. I think I’ll brush the top with some egg mixture, too — then it’ll be nice and golden once it’s baked!
M: Sounds good! I think Dad will like them.

W: Well, the Wi-Fi has improved a lot. It makes it easier for me to work even if the room isn’t big enough. M: That’s the first time today anyone’s mentioned that. It’s good to get some positive feedback on that.
W: Mmm.
M: And, is there anything you weren’t satisfied with
W: Well, normally, the trains run on time and are pretty reliable but today it was 15 minutes late.
M: OK. I’ll put that down. Now I’d also like to ask about the facilities at this station. You’ve probably noticed that. Can you say something
W: I think the best thing is that they’ve improved the amount of information about train times that’s given to passengers — before there was only one board. But now there is an electronic display panel. Every time I walk to the platform, I can
clearly and quickly know when my train will come.
M: That’s good. Anything else
W: Let’s see... One thing is that there aren’t enough places to sit down, especially on the platforms. M: OK — so I’ll put ‘seating’ down. Thanks for your time.

【原文】
W: National Hugging Day started on January 21, 1986. The Reverend Kevin Zaborney from the USA created the event to promote the emotional benefits of hugging. In America, National Hugging Day is big in schools, nursing homes and
hospitals. It is a wonderful way of letting people know how you feel about them and of showing your care. A word of advice — ask before you hug!
There is a lot of research that shows hugging is good for us. Dr. Jay Gordon wrote a book called ‘Brighter Baby’,
which said hugging a child every day may enhance a child’s intellectual development. Unlike kissing, hugging is acceptable in most societies. It can be a form of greeting between friends, a way of celebrating a victory, or a way of showing your
support for someone. Hugging also takes place in the animal world. Monkeys are very fond of a hug to show their
friendship. We even see the Teletubbies TV characters showing off their hugging skills as they give each other a “big hug” .

A .They missed the classroom.
B .Most of them lived downtown.
C .They were dreaming of travelling.
D .They were lacking in regular schooling.
25 .What can we learn from the passage
A .John taught the gymnast to perform in the air.
B .Teachers of the program had a flexible schedule.
C .John’s dream came true as a volunteer in the circus.

But two young researchers now report that combining fungi ( 真菌) with certain farm wastes can partially overcome that problem.

【答案】32 .A 33 .B 34 .A 35 .B
根据划线词的上文“as he traced a coat’s journey in the last century: cleaned, repaired and resold
repeatedly; cut down into a smaller item; eventually recycled into new fabric (他追溯了一件大衣在上个世纪的历程:反复 清洗、修理和转售;缩为成更小件的;最终被回收制成新的织物)”可知,以前的衣服会被反复多次使用,再结合表 示转折意义的“But”和划线词的下文“The average British customer buys four items a month. And it is reported that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothes go to landfills in the UK each year. 故选 A 项。
33 .推理判断题。根据第二段中“At fashion website Asos, sales of vintage clothes (古董衫) have risen by 92%. Clothing was once worn out of necessity, and now it is simply a way of life. Busy families sell used items on eBay, teenagers trade

business that mainstream retailers (零售商) want a slice of the action.
根据第四段中“However, the biggest concern may be that people keep buying because they know they can resell goods, still chasing the pleasure of the next purchase but with an eased conscience (愧疚). (然而,最大的担忧可能是, 人们继续购买,因为他们知道他们可以转售商品,仍然在追求下一次购买的乐趣,但良心上有所放松)”可知,二手 交易业务让人们有了处理已购商品的方法,解除了购买不必要衣服的愧疚感,可以继续购买衣服,即让人们可以自 由地追求快时尚。故选 A 项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“A new Netflix series, Worn Stories, documents the emotional meanings that clothes can have: Each old item is full of memories. Actually, a handbag from a grandmother and a scarf passed on by a father are both
valuable for us.

If you are particularly nervous, rehearse (排练) what you plan to say in front of a friend so you know you are coming across as you wish to.
G .But not being able to have “that conversation” can hold you back in your career

【参考范文】
Finally, I found Socky and her three tiny kittens. They were tucked away in the furthest corner beneath a pile of old
cloths, where a small, barely noticeable gap in the chest had allowed her sanctuary. Relief washed over me like a wave
crashing onto the shore; they were all cuddled together, covered in a fine layer of dust but otherwise seemed healthy and
content. Socky let out a low meow, her green eyes shining with a mixture of pride and relief as she gazed up at me. Her
kittens, blind and barely the size of my hand, mewled softly, completely unaware of my presence, yet so full of life and new possibilities.
Socky was very pleased to see me and purred(发出呼噜声) as loudly as she could. Her motor-like vibrations filled the quiet shed, and she nuzzled my hand as I knelt down to stroke her silky fur. The small space felt infinitely warmer with the little family now safe and accounted for. I gently petted the kittens, marveling at their tiny features and soft mews. It was
clear that Socky had chosen a hidden spot to give birth, a place she deemed safe from the unknowns of our new
environment. Her trust in this secluded nook made me realize that home isn’t just a place, but where love resides, even in the smallest and most unexpected corners of the world.

2. 段落续写:找到了 Socky 和它的三只小猫——它们藏在隐蔽的角落里但都很健康——Socky 看到作者很高兴—— 作者感到这个小空间很安全温暖——从 Socky 身上懂得了家的含义
