During earthquakes, wooden buildings bend to avoid building up stress. Steel is one of the main materials of modern tall buildings because it can increase their ductility（延展性）.
Dome house
A Japanese company has made dome-shaped houses with styrofoam. Styrofoam is a very light material. The whole house weighs only 80 kilograms. So when earthquakes happen, the house will not hurt people.
Besides, there are many other good ideas on building earthquake-proof buildings. For example, a company in America is developing magnetic field（磁场） technology that can raise houses above ground when earthquakes happen. We hope these ideas can be put in action and more people’s lives can be saved.

About two weeks after my visit, I was released and then visited by one of the King’s most important officials, who had helped me many times since my arrival in Lilliput.

But our King’s grandfather once cut a finger while breaking his egg this way, and so his father the King ordered all Lilliputians, from then on, to break the smaller end of their eggs. People who do that are called Small-Endians. But Lilliputians feel strongly about this and some Big-Endians have fought angrily against this law. As many as eleven thousand people have been killed because they refused to break their eggs at the smaller end. Some of the Big-Endians have escaped to join our enemies in Blefuscu. The King of Blefuscu has always wanted to defeat Lilliput in war, and now we hear that he’s prepared a large number of ships, which will attack us very soon. So you see, my friend, how much our King needs your help, in order to defeat his enemies.”
I did not hesitate for a moment. “Please tell the King,” I answered warmly, “that I am ready to give my life to save him or his country.”

This information can help scientists learn which animals are thriving and which ones need more care and help. Scientists usually use the following ways to tell animals’ age.
For many animals, their teeth can help scientists know their age. In some animals, some teeth don’t come in until a certain age. Take cows for example. Like humans, cows have two sets of teeth, milk teeth and permanent teeth. They normally get their first pair of permanent teeth when they’re two years old. Then they have the next pair at the age of three, the third pair at the age of four...

My name is Emily Chiang. I work as a forensic linguist for the Birmingham Police Department. My teammates and I often describe our work as improving the delivery of justice （正义） through language. In other words, we help to catch bad guys by studying their language.
Research on authorship is a key part of our work. We try to work out who might have written a certain piece of text. We look for different “markers”, such as strange spellings and repeatedly used phrases. For example, I might greet others by saying “hi”. But you might prefer to use “hello”. We once helped to catch a fraudster（诈骗犯） because he regularly used the unusual greeting “hiyas”.
In the US, the first case solved by forensic linguists happened in 1927．A girl was kidnapped in New York. Her family, the McClure family, received a ransom note （勒索信） addressed to the girl’s uncle, Duncan McLure, the only member of the family to spell his name McLure. Police thought it strange that the kidnapper would know that the uncle spelled his name differently from the rest of the family. They thought he was in on the kidnapping. Sure enough, the uncle finally confessed.
Of course, I think criminals（罪犯） will catch-up. Gloves can be worn to hide fingerprints. On the Internet, criminals can hide their faces, locations and voices.
