Earthquakes usually come without warning. What should you do if this happens to you An earthquake is dangerous, but there are still things you can do to protect yourself.
Stay calm as the earth begins to shake. Your chances of survival in an earthquake go up if you can keep calm. Staying calm is not easy, but it can save your life.
If you are inside when the earthquake starts, get under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect you from falling objects. Do not stand near walls and windows and stay out of the kitchen. The kitchen is dangerous because of many glass objects.
If you are outside, get to an open area as fast as you can. Stay away from buildings and trees. If you are in a car, pull over to a place where there are no trees or tall buildings and stay in the car. If you are close to the sea, try to get as far away from the water as possible. Earthquakes can cause huge waves(浪) that can really harm the people nearby.
When the earthquake is over, there is still plenty of danger. For example, a gas fire often comes with an earthquake. If you see a fire, quickly move outdoors to an open area.
Always remember to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity(慈善) and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-yous and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity. February would be neighbors, I decided. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs;our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play;…
While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app, appreciating(欣赏) other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,
I’ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary(周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”
On December 31, I wrote my last card — to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Gratitude(谢意).
23. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 means ______.
A. writing thank-you notes B. taking the train back home
C. putting the phone away D. giving money for charity
24. How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina
A. Happy and surprised. B. Shy and relaxed.
C. Sad but excited. D. Joyful but lonely.
25. The theme of the December notes might be “______”.
A. photos B. family C. holidays D. neighbors
26. What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage
A. Many thanks from her neighbors. B. More time to appreciate her own life.
C. More help from people around her. D. Happy moments to be with her friends.

Building Bridges between Nations
① In 2013, China proposed(提议) the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI,“一带一路”倡议). It’s the 10th anniversary(周年) of the BRI this year. More than 150 countries and over 30 international organizations have taken part in it. People from the Belt and Road countries have a deeper understanding of it.

They built new houses, schools and also developed roads. That makes our life easier,” said Kairat.
④ The BRI also brings changes to China. Wang Zongnan, a student in Tsinghua University, notices that recently there are more and more people from the Belt and Road countries coming to China as international students. He said, “That really changed how we look at questions and social problems.”

First of all, we should respect the teachers, study hard and do some exercise to keep healthy. Then we can develop some hobbies, like playing basketball. Next, we should get on well with other students and help each other. Whats more, don’t argue with others and do not steal their belongings. More importantly, follow the school rules and don’t carry restricted knives. Last but not least, don’t meet strangers privately, and if you are in danger, you should call the police in time.
