Analysis of students
Most of the students in the first year of senior high school have clear learning goals and show stronger confidence in English learning. When facing difficulties, they can take the initiative to ask teachers and classmates for help. Most students in this level are cooperative learners, while a few of them are individual learners. They have known some information about some endangered animals and wildlife protection, which makes it easier for them to understand the text. However, they lack the ability to find out the structure and summarize the main idea by using mind maps.
Analysis of teaching material
The theme of this section is "Describe a place with distinctive cultural identity". This section continues to focus on Chinese culture by introducing Chinatown. The theme map of this unit presents a typical scene of Chinatown in San Francisco, and the Reading and Thinking section also mentions Chinatown, laying the foundation for this section. The purpose of introducing Chinatown is mainly to reflect the relationship between Chinese culture and American multiculturalism. It is an important component of American multiculturalism. Chinatown is also a spiritual home for overseas Chinese and an important window for spreading Chinese culture. Foreigners can experience Chinese culture up close in Chinatown.

Pre-reading (Warming-up) T lead in a sentence above this passage ‘describe a place with distinctive cultural identity’, and asks ss what’s the meaning of word ’distinctive’. T asks a question: The climate in Qianan is distinctive or distinct T shows some pictures about Chinatown, and asks ‘Have you ever watched a movie about Chinatown’ T shows a video clip about Detective Chinatown-Chinese Kungfu is very powerful. Ss write down these words ’ distinctive, unique , distinct identity’ ‘distinct’ Ss guess the place is Chinatown. And the movie is Detective Chinatown. Watch it carefully and take some notes about basic information. Through the illustration, ss can use these unfamiliar words and try to use it in later composition. Stimulate Ss' interest in learning the topic through video clip, deepen their understanding of Chinatown, and embed textual information to facilitate knowledge connection. Behind keeping up with the times and understanding the changes in some place names is the strong power of China.
pre-reading (prediction) T gives ss a new identity: Suppose you are a guide, introduce Chinatown in some aspects. First, teacher set an example like location, that is in San Francisco. According to ss’ response, T writes down the mind map. Ss think about it for a moment and talk about this question with desk mate. Answer: climate, history, ethnic group, languages, tourist attraction, famous figures, industry and famous food and so on. Before reading this article, ss have a guess about the content as a guide. Through pair work, ss can have more opinions by sharing. The mind map here later will be used again for detailed information in this passage.
