I worked at a local station of the Berlin fire department. We got
an alert(警报) around 8:25 pm that Friday and rushed to the fire
engine, where the printout from the dispatcher(调度员) said there was a
nine-year-old boy locked in a safe.
I asked myself:if it were a safe, would it be airtight I was aware
that it might already be too late by the time we arrived.I had to plan
for a bad outcome. On the other hand,if we were in time, how long
would it take us to open the safe I knew it would be an incredibly
difficult task. It's what safes are designed for—not to be opened.
It took less than five minutes to reach the property. When I saw a
woman crying on the street,I knew the situation was serious. She was
the boy's mother and she led us into the basement. She told us the
boy was alive and we started talking to him;he was very calm.We
asked how it had happened:during a game of hide and seek with his
five-year-old brother,he had thought the safe would be a good place to
hide.
The boy's parents had got the house from his mother's father. The
unlocked safe had been there when they moved in and was in an
area they didn't use much. The boy's little brother had shut the
safe, then, when he couldn't open it again. The only person who knew
the combination was the boy's late grandfather.
From the outset, the biggest priority was getting oxygen to the
boy.We got oxygen from the hospital. The boy said that he could feel
a thin stream of air.I asked his parents if anyone had opened the safe
before and they said no. So we had to guess a six-digit code
(密码).We started typing them in——but we had to wait 10 minutes
between each attempt before we could try again. So quickly we tried
them all.No luck.

We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force,
starting with a drill. So strong was the safe that it was difficult for
us to drill a hole immediately. But that was an important way to
provide the boy oxygen. We comforted him as we drilled. What made
us relieved was that the boy was still in a calm state, following what
we told him. How time flew! Two hours saw our success in drilling
a small hole and then we would cut the safe. Luckily, there came the
good news that the mother, who calmed down, offered us some
relative possible combinations. (90 words)
Then, just as we started to make the first cut, my workmate
typed in the correct code. “Click!” the door of the safe opened,
followed by a burst of cheers. Out came the boy, wiping his eyes,
sobbing. Everyone in the scene felt the stone in their hearts fell down
to the ground. The mother came over and hugged the boy tightly, as
if they reunited after a long separation, thanking us again and again.
Nothing could be better than participating in an inspiring rescue.
Though I had been joining in hundreds of missions of helping others,
it was this time that confirmed me most the duty of a firefighter.

When Mary entered the South Pole Penguin Research Lab, she
saw her friend Tom gently stroking(轻抚) a penguin in his arms. As
children of the lab scientists, Mary and Tom often observed the
emperor penguins that were studied to understand how they adapted to
extreme temperatures—insights that could aid human survival.
“ We're thirteen, Tom. It's time to grow up and stop playing with
the lab penguins,” said Mary as she started cleaning. “They're research
animals, not pets.”
“But the birds listen to me!” insisted Tom, his breath forming a
cloud in the freezing air. “You're just trying to be a penguin
whisperer again,” Mary replied, shaking her head with a gentle smile.
The penguins seemed playful as they walked, dove, swam and chased
their live fish for sport before eating.
Suddenly, an alarm rang out and red lights flashed, signaling a
problem. The kids rushed over to look into it. “It's colder than
before—there's ice forming on the water,” noted Tom. Though always
cold, Mary had never seen ice here before. She checked the habitat
monitor and found that the temperature had gone down a lot.
“The heater must be broken!”
Mary quickly sent a message to their parents' research team, who
were conducting outdoor studies. With the adults away, the kids would
have to deal with the freezing conditions until help arrived.
Time dragged as Mary and Tom anxiously waited. The increasing
cold caused them to shake. “I wonder what emperor penguins do in
extreme cold, since they stay in the Pole all winter instead of going
somewhere warmer,” asked Mary. “They huddle (挤作一团),” Tom
answered. “They huddle together tightly so that the birds in the
middle will be warm enough.” “What about the ones on the edge ”
Mary asked. “They push their way towards the center, and then move
back out to the edge, and struggle back again. Scientists in the early
21st century recorded it.” He replied as he stared at the large crowd
of the penguins in the lab.

“I have an idea to stay warm!” Tom shouted excitedly. With
those words, Tom went slowly straight to the penguins, stretching his
arms. Puzzled, Mary hesitated but had to follow Tom to deal with the
freezing condition. “What's your idea ” Mary asked, shaking, because
of the sharp down of the temperature. On arrival of the penguin
huddle, Tom fondled the penguins at the edge. Some of them stepped
back a little first and then leaned against Tom as if they were old
friends. Mary joined him in the huddle and just as the penguins did,
they felt good though it was turning colder. (93 words)
Two and a half hours later, the parents returned with help. What
surprised them was that nothing was wrong with the two kids! Instead,
they were absorbed in the “game” with the penguins, pushing
themselves to the center and then moving out. So amazing! When
asked why they did so, Tom answered proudly, “I once read a story
by the scientists saying the emperor penguins would carry out such
efficient actions to stay warm.” Their parents and other scientists
praised Tom and Mary for their wide range of knowledge and
applying it in time. To the brother and sister, it was a valuable lesson,
learning to survive in life. (98 words)
