Erie raised his daughter Riley alone. One day, Eric noticed a
young teenage boy standing in front of a drugstore. He approached
him, and found out that the boy wanted to buy medicine for his sick
mother, but had no money. The boy cried out, “If I don't bring home
medicine, my mom will die. But I won't be able to handle it. ”
Upon hearing this, Erie didn't hesitate to pay for the medicine.
“I'll pay for the medicine on his behalf,” he said, handing the
pharmacist (药剂师) a couple of bills from his pocket. The boy
looked at Eric with grateful eyes, and cried, “Thank you so much.
You are heaven-sent. ”
“There will always be people willing to help you, son,” Eric told
him before handing him two portions of food. “Here, take this to
your mom and have a hot meal with her,” he said before letting the
boy go.
His daughter Riley saw the whole scene and said, “Dad, we have
barely enough money. Why did you pay for the medicine ”
“Riley, the good you put out into the world will eventually find its
way back to you. Just keep doing good,” Eric told his daughter.
When Riley turned thirty, she needed an operation urgently after
being told there was something wrong with her heart. With difficulty
breathing, Eric rushed Riley to the hospital in an ambulance.
“You'll be alright, Riley,” he cried. “Don't worry; Daddy is here. We'll
get through this together,” he promised her.
Eric did try his best to find the money for his daughter's
operation. He asked all of his friends, but it was still not enough.
Therefore, Eric decided to sell their house. It was enough to pay for
her operation, but they would be left with nothing. “It's okay,” he
told himself. “I will be able to earn money again, but if I lose my
daughter, nothing will ever bring her back.”
By the time Eric made it back to the hospital, Riley was in her
hospital room, weak and pale. He sat beside her bed and held her
hand. “You'll be okay, my sweet daughter. We'll soon
have the money for the operation,” he promised her.

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught
him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his
morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as
he pleased.
There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor
fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel
going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep themselves
above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only
son should never learn to read and to write. They could not teach
him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire
about his dog, which was missing. He found the little boy, whose
name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was making marks
with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing
pictures.
"No. I am trying to write," said little Joe, “but I know only two
words. Those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them."
"If I could only learn to read and write," said he, "I should be
the happiest boy in the world.".
"Then I will make you happy,” said Charles. "I am only a little
boy, but I can teach you that.”
"My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you
will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and to write."
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to
thank Charles. They told him it was what they wished above all
things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book
in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and
Charles son began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and
said,“Charles did not always amuse himself. I often see him go to the
house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.

Jenny stared at the store window longingly (渴望地) . There was
nothing in this world that she wanted more than a happy Hanah doll
and all that currently separated her from the hottest doll of the
holiday season was a thin piece of glass and 29.95 plus tax.
Unfortunately, Jenny didn't even have the 95 cents, so she let out a
deep sigh and continued walking home.
Suddenly, a pink rectangle (矩形) in the snow caught her eye.
Jenny walked over and realized it was a leather wallet She removed
it from the snow, and opened the wallet to find a thick pile of folded
green bills and two plastic cards. One was a credit card and the other
an ID.
Jenny stared at the old woman in her ID photo. The woman had
a beautiful smile that reminded Jenny of her grandma. Jenny sighed
and then she put the wallet into her purse. She turned around and
walked in the direction from which she came.
Jenny's heart beat quickly as she entered the store. She had long
dreamed about this moment, but something didn't feel right about it.
As she approached a neat pile of Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed
away her feelings. She grasped one Happy Hannah doll.
As Jenny approached the register, the Happy Hannah Show theme
song began playing. It was her mobile phone. It was her grandma. In
one hand she held the Happy Hannah doll and in the other she held
the phone on which her grandma was calling. Jenny's heart was filled
with love and appreciation as she thought of her sweet old grandma.
She put the doll down and picked up the phone call.
"Hi,Grandma I'm going to be a little bit late tonight. I've got to
drop something off…Yeah, it was good……OK…Alright… I love you
too." Jenny left the store and walked through the melting snow all the
way to the other side of the town. She thought of her grandma as
she rang the bell at 301 West Street.

? “Are you Mrs. Green ” Jenny asked politely with some certainty,
recognizing the face from the ID card instantly.
? The woman nodded in confusion and let the girl come in. After a
brief conversation, it turned out that Mrs. Green lost her wallet on
her way to the store with the money to buy gifts for some poor
children.
The woman who answered the door had been crying recently and looked upset and anxious.
? Feeling her face burning with a sense of guilt as well as
somewhat relief, Jenny took out the pink leather wallet, rejoicing to
see Mrs. Green's eyes rounding in surprise and sparkling with hope in
a flash.

? She held it to her chest tightly and then pulled Jenny into her
arms, tears streaming down her face. “You are the real angel. No one
knows what the wallet means to the children.” She sobbed out her
heartfelt gratitude.
The woman took the wallet smilingly.
? Jenny's soft heart was touched because her grandma often called
her little angel, all her previous inner struggle giving way to the pure
pride in her right choice.
? That night, she darted across the streets, eager to tell her grandma
that today she got a present more meaningful than Hannah doll—she
was a real angel!

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the
economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs.
Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People
were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent
a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems,
and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would
bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited
the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took
care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The
little boy – his name was Bernard – had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,”she said to her own children, John,
Harry, and Clara.“He is such a help to his mother. He wants very
much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about
Bernard.“I wish we could help him to earn money.”said Clara.
“His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,”said Harry.“We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang
to his feet and cried,“I have a great idea! I have a solution that we
can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had
an idea, it was sure to be a good one.“I tell you what we can

I had stopped at the Swindon services(服务区)while on my way
back to London. As I drove up the slip road,I spotted a man with a
backpack and his thumb(拇指)out. I pulled over and lowered the
window.
“Which way are you heading ” I asked.“I'm going back to
London.”
“Ah, that would be grand,”came his immediate reply. He opened
the door and liftedhis backpack on to the back seat.“I'm Brendan,”he
said with an easy smile and a rich Irish(爱尔兰)tongue.“I was getting
a bit desperate. I've had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody
seems to stop these days.”
“I haven't eaten in days,”said Brendan.“I'm trying to get home.”
I've always enjoyed picking up hitchhikers. I used to be a
motoring journalist and crossed the country in various test cars.
Picking up a hiker always made me feel a little less guilty about all
the miles I was doing.
As we headed east along the motorway, Brendan told me how he
came to be waiting for a lift on that particular evening, and also
about the two recent family tragedies(悲剧) that had ruined him and
pushed him out of his old life and on to the road.
Brendan told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed
his off-grid(不入网的)lifestyle. Until last week, that is, when he'd been
mugged(抢劫).
“Three young men in Birmingham took my other pack and it had
all my money in it. I've been sleeping out since then. I haven't eaten
in days. I'm hoping to get some casual work in London, so I can
then get myself home to Ireland.”
It must have been the concept of home that got me, and helping
a man who'd clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to
do.
