Passage 1
(2024·福建福州·一模)Welcome to the world of clay sculpting (泥塑)! Shape your imagination and show your creativity. Here are some tips to help you pick the right clay and improve your sculpting skills.
What type of clay should you use
There are several types of clay used for sculptures, depending on how you can use them and the type of finished product you would like to have.
Oil-based modeling clay
※hard and does not dry out like water-based clay
※not easy to work with as it requires heat to soften
Polymer-based modeling clay
※soft and does not dry out, making it easy to mold (成形)
“Firing” clay
※water-based clay
※easy to sculpt with this clay to create different shapes
Walter E. Disney clay
※water-based clay
※used by experienced sculptors
Using water-based clay is the best for beginners to practice sculpting skills at home. It is by far the easiest to use to create shapes with simple tools and it can be cleaned up easily with soap and water.
How do you start sculpting
Follow the five useful tips to make clay sculptures.
Think of the final piece
Before you start, design how you imagine the final product to look like in different ways.
Test clay for wetness
Pull off a small piece of the clay and roll (卷) it in your hand until it forms a cylindrical (圆柱形的) shape. If it is soft, it is usable. If it breaks, try adding more water.
Shape your clay
Coiling the clay is a good way of turning clay into circles to create detailed shapes. This prevents the shaped clay from breaking into pieces.
Try out and practice
Check how different tools affect the material. Try out ways of building up clay, connecting pieces and adding details.
Have fun
All sculptors improve by learning from their mistakes. Working with clay is supposed to be a relaxing and fun experience. Do not be afraid to try even if you know nothing.

Passage 13
(2024·江苏泰州·一模)Writer Liz Pichon, known for her bestselling Tom Gates series for children, shares the books that shaped her.
Reading this as a child was a life-changing moment. My mum’s friend bought me this book to improve my spelling skills. She thought it would make me laugh. It really did. And it stuck in my memory a lot. I love the drawings — they planted a seed (种子) in my head somewhere that pictures and words go together and can be really funny.
This book is so tiny and thin, but I loved that it had all these silly poems inside with rich attractive drawings and it made me want to write rhymes, and to have a go at drawing. After buying this in a local bookshop, I started reading it. I’m always including silly poems in my books and I think that’s certainly down to the influence of this book.
This book has a special meaning for me. When I had to come up with a story for my homework, I could just change the plot (情节) of Jaws a little. My teacher would never know. He thought it was amazing. I tell that experience to children now, because copying other people’s stories is a great way of learning how to do things — by seeing how other people do them.
