The Mid-Autumn Festival in China and Thanksgiving in America are different but share some similarities. Let’s take a look.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. At first, people regarded this day as a harvest (收获) festival, since fruits and vegetables had been collected from the fields. Now it is a time for family reunion (团圆). To celebrate the festival, Chinese people place all kinds of food at tables in their yards. When it gets dark, all the family members sit around the table, admire the full moon and eat mooncakes to remember friends and relatives. Song Dynasty poet Su Shi once wrote, “So let us wish that man will live long as he can! Though miles apart, we’ll share the beauty she displays.” Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday of November. But the first Thanksgiving was in December, 1621. The first English people, who took a ship to America, invited the American Indians to have a big meal to thank them for their help. The festival began then. Today, people usually have a family meal on Thanksgiving. They eat delicious food such as pumpkins, corn and a big turkey. There’s a tradition about turkeys. Each turkey has a V-shaped bone. People call it a wishbone. After cooking, two people each take one end of the bone. They make a wish and pull (拉) outwards. According to a study, birds are building their nests (巢) with rubbish from humans. 97
A group of European scientists looked into bird nests. They found that birds use man-made things in nests almost everywhere on the earth except Antarctica (南极洲). 98 Blackbirds use plastic bags to build their nests, while storks (鹳) get nests built with cardboard. Seabirds are found to use fishing nets, and birds in cities in South America add cigarette butts (烟头) to nests.
99 This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals, which can drive insects away and protect baby birds. Plastic bags can keep animals warm, and other hard things can make nests stronger.
100 Rubbish may bring more harm to birds in the end. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. The baby birds may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a 2014 study. If the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. 101 Fishing nets may trap (困住) birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. In a word, our friends in the air are feeling humans’ bad influence on the environment.
A.Some rubbish seems to be helpful.
B.Few birds help humans cut down on rubbish.
C.Different birds use different kinds of waste.
D.However, all these are just one side of the coin.
E.The birds will also get hurt if they mistake rubbish for food.

Are home robots a good idea
Dear classmates,
As society develops, more and more families use home robots in their daily lives. Is it a good idea I’ve made a survey in our class recently.
Let’s have a look at the result of my survey. 56% of the students like the idea. Here are the reasons. First, home robots help with housework so that people have more time to do things they enjoy. Second, home robots can act as guards when no one is home. This brings people a sense of security. Third, they can also make people feel less lonely. However, 31% of the students disagree. Most robots have cameras to collect information. That puts the owners’ private information at a risk of being exposed. Besides, depending on the robots too much may make people lazier. It also costs too much to buy a home robot at present. As for the rest of the students, they are not sure if it’s a good idea to have a home robot.
In my opinion, home robots can make our lives easier. I will surely get one in the future.
That’s all. Thanks for listening.

That’s all. Thanks for listening.2024年中考英语考前信息必刷卷05

Ba Jin, born as Li Yaotang in 1904, was a famous Chinese writer who loved to share stories and thoughts that touched people’s hearts. He lived a long life, passing away in 2005, but his stories still make many people happy and think deeply today.
Ba Jin was from Chengdu in Sichuan, China, but his family came from Jiaxing in Zhejiang. When he was a young man, he went to France to learn and see the world. He loved reading books from different countries and decided to share these wonderful stories with others in China.
One of his most famous sets of books is called the Turbulence Trilogy, which includes Family, Spring, and Autumn. These books are like a big family saga, telling the story of a Chinese family going through many changes, just like China was going through big changes during that time.
Another set of books he wrote is called the Love Trilogy, with Fog, Rain, and Electricity. These stories are about love and how it can be both beautiful and challenging.
What’s really cool about Ba Jin is that he didn’t just write his own stories. He also loved translating books from other languages like English, French, Russian, and Japanese, so that more people in China could enjoy them too. He translated works from great writers like Gogol, Turgenev, and Tolstoy.
Ba Jin was a very brave writer. He wrote about things that were important and sometimes even might cause trouble to him. He believed in freedom, equality (平等), and love for all people, and he wanted to make the world a better place through his writing.
Today, many people remember Ba Jin as a great storyteller and a kind-hearted person. His books are still read in schools and loved by kids and grown-ups alike. Ba Jin’s stories and ideas continue to inspire and teach us to care about the world and to care for each other.
