David Bennett, a 57-year-old man from the US, received the world’s first pig heart transplant in January, 2022. He died two months later, on March 9.
It may sound like a failure, but it actually is a big step forward for xenotransplantation（异种器官移植）.
Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for many years, as doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the big problem of organ transplant waiting lists. In the US alone, over 100,000 patients are on a list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart, lung or kidney. Therefore, medical science has turned to animal organs.
Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century. There are few success stories. Usually, patients’ bodies reject（排斥）the animal organs. Bennett lived much longer than other xenotransplant patients. That’s because scientists removed pig genes（基因）that would cause fast rejection. Then they added human genes to help the body accept the organ.
“A lot of new information will come out that will help the field move forward at a faster speed.” Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the transplant program, told The Guardian.
In another xenotransplant success, in 2021, doctors at New York University joined gene-edited pig kidneys to a human patient’s blood vessels（血管）outside of the body. Also that year, doctors at the University of Alabama put the gene-edited pig kidneys inside a patient’s body.
Though these recent successes were short-lived, they show that there may be a way forward for xenotransplants.

Travelling around the world can be exciting, but it can also lead to culture shock and feelings of stress.
When I moved to Tuscany, Italy, right after college, I was enamored by the scenery. Who wouldn’t be The rolling hills, beautiful buildings and delicious food made the long flight worth every minute. I was excited about my new beginning. But then, I started to notice little things.
As an American, we are used to a bit of personal space. Where I’m from, knocking into someone or standing very closely is considered rude. This is different from the truth in Italy.
Since this was before translation apps were common, I would feel helpless sometimes for not knowing the language. However, Italians like to speak with their hands — a habit I’ve carried over to this day.
Of course, just because you’ve experienced culture shock in one country doesn’t mean you won’t do so in another.
Years later, when I moved to China, my experience was special. The culture there was something very foreign to me — down to how to buy things. Before moving there, I had never heard of WeChat or Alipay. I wasn’t prepared at all for how important these things would be.
Experiencing small waves of culture shock reminds me that I am travelling around the world and that I should appreciate what I’m taking in.
American-British writer Bill Bryson said that “ … the greatest reward of travel is … to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar that it is taken for granted (被认为是理所当然的).”

It’s hard to go anywhere these days without seeing people staring at their smart-phones, but one place that still asks you to turn them off is the cinema. But even this may be about to change. In an interview with Variety, Adam Aron, CEO of one of the biggest cinema chains in the world, AMC, said the company is considering allowing phones to be used in its US theaters.
Aron said the plan was to draw more millennials（千禧一代）into cinemas as a way of increasing the industry’s number of audience（观众）. “When you tell 22-year-olds to turn off the phone so as not to ruin the movie, they hear ‘please cut off your left arm above the elbow’. You can’t tell 22-year-olds to turn off their cellphones. That’s not how they live their lives,” he said.
“We need to reshape our product in some concrete ways so that millennials go to movie theaters with the same degree of intensity（强烈）as baby boomers（尤指第二次世界大战后生育高峰期出生的人）went to movie theaters throughout their lives.”
Aron admits that although the idea may attract some people, not everyone is going to appreciate having the glare of multiple smart-phone screens disturbing their cinema experience. “We’re going to have to figure out a way to do it that doesn’t disturb today’s audience, because today’s moviegoers don’t want anybody sitting next to them texting or having their phone on. But there are ads up there saying turn off your phone.”
Aron did offer one possible solution that could potentially（潜在地）benefit everyone. He suggested designating（指定）certain auditoriums（观众席）as ‘texting friendly’, which would hopefully mean that those who can’t bear to go without checking their phone every few minutes can watch a movie in one screening room while everyone else can use another.
Whether we do ever see ‘texting screens’ appearing in any of AMC’s cinemas remains to be seen. So far, the idea hasn’t been very well received, with most people saying, rightly, that keeping a phone turned off during a movie isn’t a difficult task.
