I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, or cell phones in general. I was literally waiting to get a letter to see how the weekend had gone, which was usually the warmest comfort for me.
So when I moved to New York and got sucker-punched in the face by depression, I did the only thing I could think of — writing letters like my mother for strangers. I blogged about those letters and crazily promised I would write you a hand-written letter if asked to.
Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak — a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied (恐吓) in rural Kansas…, all asking me to write them a letter and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how the act The World Needs More Lone Letters was born, fueled by those trips to the mailbox. But the thing about these letters is that most of them have been written by people, who have grown up into a paperless world where some best conversations happen swiftly on a screen.
I’ve been carrying this mail crate (大木箱) with me these days, which is a magical icebreaker. So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) from war in Afghanistan, and how she left love letters throughout the house as a way to say, “Come back to me.” And the man, who had decided to take his life, tonight slept safely with letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him.
These are the kinds of stories that convince me that letter-writing will always be needed, even in these days, because it is an art now.
24.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.The efficiency of write letters.
B.The author’s care for her family.
C.The author’s attachment to letters.
D.The author’s love for the college life.
25.What inspired the author to launch the act
A.The letters’ comforting effect on people.
B.Her intention of providing professional aid.
C.The positive influence of modern technology.
D.Her mother’s fear of modern communication.
26.Why does the author call the mail crate “a magical icebreaker”
A.It is capable of doing magic tricks.
B.It starts a conversation with passers-by.
C.It helps people to recover from traumas.
D.It is hot enough to melt ice on a cold day.
27.What is the best title for the passage
A.Love for Writing
B.Priceless Family Letters
C.Love Letters to Strangers
D.The Art of Writing Letters

With a brain the size of a pinhead, insects possess a great sense of direction. They manage to locate themselves and move through small openings. How do they do this with their limited brain power Understanding the inner workings of an insect’s brain can help us in our search towards energy-efficient computing, physicist Elisabetta Chicca of the University of Groningen shows with her most recent result: a robot that acts like an insect.
It’s not easy to make use of the images that come in through your eyes when deciding what your feet or wings should do. A key aspect here is the apparent motion of things as you move. “Like when you're on a train,” Chicca explains. “The trees nearby appear to move faster than the houses far away.” Insects use this information to infer how far away things are. This works well when moving in a straight line, but reality is not that simple. To keep things manageable for their limited brain power, they adjust their behaviour: they fly in a straight line, make a turn, then make another straight line.
In search of the neural mechanism (神经机制) that drives insect behaviour, PhD student Thorben Schoepe developed a model of its neuronal activity and a small robot that uses this model to find the position. His model is based on one main principle: always head towards the area with the least apparent motion. He had his robot drive through a long passage consisting of two walls and the robot centred in the middle of the passage, as insects tend
to do. In other virtual environments, such as a space with small openings, his model also showed similar behaviour to insects.
The fact that a robot can find its position in a realistic environment is not new. Rather, the model gives insight into how insects do the job, and how they manage to do things so efficiently. In a similar way, you could make computers more efficient.
In the future, Chicca hopes to apply this specific insect behaviour to a chip as well. “Instead of using a general-purpose computer with all its possibilities, you can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that does the job, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient.” She comments.
28.Why is “a train” mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.To illustrate the principle of train motion. B.To highlight why human vision is limited.
C.To explain how insects perceive distances. D.To compare the movement of trees and houses.
29.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Schoepe’s model
A.Its novel design. B.Its theoretical basis.
C.Its possible application. D.Its working mechanism.
30.What do the researchers think of the finding
A.Amusing. B.Discouraging. C.Promising. D.Contradictory.
31.What will Chicca’s follow-up study focus on
A.Inventing insect-like chips. B.Studying general-purpose robots.
C.Creating insect-inspired computers. D.Developing energy-efficient hardware.

From sweeping landscapes to amazing buildings, Taiwan is an island that many tourists visit frequently. That’s why it can seem odd that one of its most famous landmarks is two humble mailboxes. Located in the Zhongshan District in the city of Taipei, these unique mailboxes have caught the public’s imagination thanks to their appearance. Unlike most mailboxes, these two are severely bent.
Due to its location, Taiwan tends to be struck by typhoons, as it is usually hit by three or four windstorms a year. In 2015, a particularly bad one known as Typhoon Soudelor struck the island. During the storm, a billboard got loose due to the heavy winds and hit the mailboxes. While it bent their posts, it didn’t tear them down. After the storm was over, people came across the newly leaning mailboxes and fell in love with them. Not only did they look adorable, but they were also a symbol of resilience(坚韧) and survival.
Social media quickly caught wind of these new landmarks and people began visiting them. It wasn’t long before they started staging fun photos with the new landmarks, using forced perspective—similar to the way tourists pose in Italy with the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This led authorities to accept the symbolism of the
mailboxes willingly, and instead of repairing them, they added a board telling their story in Chinese, English, and Japanese.
The board reads: “On August 8th, 2015, Typhoon Soudelor struck Taiwan. We were hit in the heads by a signboard as a result and couldn’t help but lean over from the pain. It was so painful in fact—we can’t stand up straight anymore. But we persevered: we didn’t fall over after all. We have to take life as it comes and in a way, I think we look more artsy and sophisticated this way! Do we inspire you Take a picture with us to remind yourselves that we are all survivors and can persevere no matter what.”
The best part of this Taipei attraction is that the mailboxes are still operational. The letters in the boxes are even marked with a special stamp that shows the famous mailboxes.
32.Why are the mailboxes bent
A.They were struck by a billboard.
B.They were squeezed by a huge stone.
C.They were blown over by the strong wind.
D.They were remodeled on purpose by their designer.
33.Why didn’t the government repair the mailboxes
A.They were difficult to fix. B.They had become very commercialized.
C.They were gaining popularity among tourists. D.They were a comfort to the Typhoon sufferers.
34.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Having experienced a lot. B.With delicate decorations.
C.Of first-class quality. D.Being windproof.
35.How do the mailboxes inspire people
A.They present very high artistic value.
B.They indicate focus on beauty appreciation.
C.They warn people of damaging effects of typhoons.
D.They symbolize great courage in the face of adversity.

Based on his own research at Washington University in St. Louis and other scientific studies, psychology lecturer Bono offers the following tips for getting and staying happier in your life.
36 Looking forward to an enjoyable experience can make it all that much sweeter. Wait a couple of days before seeing a new movie that just came out, plan your big vacation for later in the summer, and try to take time to enjoy each bite of dessert. On the opposite, get negative tasks out of the way as quickly as possible — any
delay will only make them seem worse.
People who focus more on process than outcome tend to remain motivated in the face of setbacks. They’re better at sticking with major challenges and prefer them over the easy route. 37 Because it celebrates rewards that come from the work itself. Focusing only on the outcome can lead to premature burnout if things don’t go well.
38 Find an activity that allows you to get together with friends on a regular, ongoing basis. A weekly happy hour, poker night, or TV show ensures consistency and motivation in your social interactions. People with high-quality relationships are not only happier, but also healthier. 39
The next time you are attracted to use your phone to look through social media, look through your list of contacts instead. 40 The happiness you get from a real connection with another person will be far greater than any comments or likes you get on social media.
A.Anticipation itself is pleasurable.
B.Decrease unnecessary socializing.
C.Find someone to call or FaceTime.

Kevin woke to the blaring beep of his alarm clock. “Can’t wait for that camping trip,” Kevin thought, filled with excitement. As he was leaving home, his dad grabbed him by the hand and said, “Before you go, just tell me
the directions on where you and your friends are going to stay.”
“But dad!” Kevin complained.
“No buts!” Kevin’s dad added.
“Fine.” Kevin told him the directions and left.
The three friends, Kevin, Jay and Nathan, had been planning this adventure for weeks, packing their stuff-tents, snacks, and a map-preparing for a 3-day outdoor exploration. Excitement ran through Kevin as they departed for their campsite. “This trip is going to be awesome, ” Nathan excitedly yelled as they set off. But little did they know that nature had a surprise in store for them.
The first day at the campsite was going great, setting up tents, collecting firewood, and sharing stories. “Man, we nailed these tents, ” Kevin said. “I know it was easy really,” Nathan replied. The friends were happy.
Yet towards night, as the dark clouds gathered overhead, the atmosphere shifted, and a sudden storm erupted with unforgiving anger. Rain poured down from the heavens like a relentless waterfall, transforming the peaceful campsite into a muddy battleground. Worse still, a huge tree was uprooted and crashed down with a deafening crack on their only means of escape - their car. Kevin’s eyes widened in horror as he spotted the damaged wreckage beneath the fallen giant. “Our car!” he screamed over the howling wind, his voice a mix of disbelief and despair. “We’re stuck here,” he declared, his words barely audible against the backdrop of thunder and raindrops. They realized that their plans had been violently spoiled by forces beyond their control. The once quiet campsite now stood as a deserted battlefield, the fallen tree serving as a painful reminder of the unpredictable nature of the world around them.

Honestly, I can’t believe my dream has come true. As a young man, I have always been imagining moving to Los Angeles one day and putting my whole heart into music. Of course, at
the time, this seemed like a very distant hope. Thanks to my fans, supporters and wife. I’m here today. First, I released three twelve song records, which slowly gained attention around my hometown in northern England, and some nearby regions like Scotland and Ireland. And now my latest project, which was just a single song, caught the world’s attention. For that I’d say it only happened because I refused to give up. Through the UPS and downs in my career, I did it all for the love of music. So being recognized for this award means a lot to me. To all the young musicians out there, you can do it too. Plus, to all the fans and anyone enjoying my music, I’ve done this for you. This award is for all of us. May many more great things come in the future. Put your hands together for our host Bob Ackerman with the next award.

根据第一段“I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, or cell phones in general. I was literally waiting to get a letter to see how the weekend had gone, which was usually the warmest comfort for me.”(我是大学里唯一一个有理由去邮箱的孩子,因为我妈妈从来不相信电子邮件或者手机。
根据第三段“Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak—a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied(恐吓)in rural Kansas…, all asking me to write them a letter and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. ”(一夜之间,我的收件箱变成了心碎的港湾——一位在萨克拉门托的单身母亲,一个在堪萨斯州乡下被欺负的女孩……所有人都要求我给他们写一封信,给他们一个在邮箱旁等待的理由)可知,信件对人们的安慰作用激发了作者发起这项活动。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized(受精神创伤)from war in Afghanistan, and how she left love letters throughout the house as a way to say, “Come back to me.” And the man, who had decided to take his life, tonight slept safely with letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him.”(于是我开始给陌生人讲述一个女人的故事,她的丈夫在阿富汗战争中受到了创伤,她如何在家里到处留下情书,以一种方式说:“回到我身边来。”
根据第二段“I did the only thing I could think of — writing letters like my mother for strangers. I blogged about those letters and crazily promised I would write you a hand-written letter if asked to.”(我做了我唯一能想到的事——像我母亲一样给陌生人写信。我把这些信写在博客上,并疯狂地承诺,如果你让我写,我会给你写一封手写的信)根据倒数第二段“So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized(受精神创伤)from war in Afghanistan, and how she left love letters throughout the house as a way to say, “Come
back to me.” And the man, who had decided to take his life, tonight slept safely with letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him.”(于是我开始给陌生人讲述一个女人的故事,她的丈夫在阿富汗战争中受到了创伤,她如何在家里到处留下情书,以一种方式说:“回到我身边来。”

根据第二段“A key aspect here is the apparent motion of things as you move. “Like when you're on a train,” Chicca explains. “The trees nearby appear to move faster than the houses far away.” Insects use this information to infer how far away things are.(这里的一个关键方面是当你移动时物体的明显运动。“就像你在火车上一样,”Chicca解释道。“附近的树似乎比远处的房子移动得快。”昆虫利用这些信息来推断物体的距离)”可推知,本段提到火车是为了解释昆虫如何感知距离的。故选C项。
29.主旨大意题。根据第三段“In search of the neural mechanism (神经机制) that drives insect behaviour, PhD student Thorben Schoepe developed a model of its neuronal activity and a small robot that uses this model to find the position. His model is based on one main principle: always head towards the area with the least apparent motion. He had his robot drive through a long passage consisting of two walls and the robot centred in the middle of the passage, as insects tend to do. In other virtual environments, such as a space with small openings, his model also showed similar behaviour to insects.(为了寻找驱动昆虫行为的神经机制,博士生Thorben Schoepe开发了一个昆虫神经活动模型,并开发了一个小型机器人,利用这个模型来找到昆虫的位置。他的模型基于一个主要原则:总是朝着运动最不明显的区域前进。他让他的机器人穿过一条由两堵墙组成的长通道,机器人就像昆虫一样,站在通道的中间。在其他虚拟环境中,比如有小开口的空间,他的模型也表现出与昆虫相似的行为)”可知,关于Schoepe的模型,本段主要讨论了它的工作机制。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In a similar way, you could make computers more efficient.(同
样地,你可以使计算机更有效率)”以及最后一段“In the future, Chicca hopes to apply this specific insect behaviour to a chip as well. “Instead of using a general-purpose computer with all its possibilities, you can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that does the job, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient.”
根据最后一段“In the future, Chicca hopes to apply this specific insect behaviour to a chip as well. “Instead of using a general-purpose computer with all its possibilities, you can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that does the job, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient.” She comments.(将来,Chicca希望将昆虫的这种特殊行为也应用到芯片上。“你可以构建特定的硬件,而不是使用具有所有功能的通用计算机;一个微小的芯片就能完成这项工作,让物体变得更小、更节能。”她评论道)”可推知,Chicca的后续研究重点是将昆虫的这种特殊行为应用到芯片上。故选A项。

根据第二段“During the storm, a billboard got loose due to the heavy winds and hit the mailboxes. While it bent their posts, it didn’t tear them down.(在暴风雨中,一块广告牌因大风而松动,砸在了邮箱上。虽然它弄弯了柱子,但并没有把它们砸倒)”可知,在风暴期间,一块广告牌因强风而松动,砸到了邮箱,使其弯曲。故选A。
根据第三段“Social media quickly caught wind of these new landmarks and people began visiting them. It wasn’t long before they started staging fun photos with the new landmarks, using forced perspective—similar to the way tourists pose in Italy with the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This led authorities to accept the symbolism of the mailboxes willingly, and instead of repairing them, they added a board telling their story in Chinese, English, and Japanese.(社交媒体很快就发现了这些新地标,人们开始参观它们。
根据第四段划线词前文“It was so painful in fact—we can’t stand up straight anymore. But we persevered: we didn’t fall over after all. We have to take life as it comes and in a way, I think we look more artsy(它是如此痛苦,事实上,我们不能站直了。但我们坚持了下来:我们终究没有倒下。我们必须接受生活,在某种程度上,我认为我们看起来更有艺术性)”可知,这是当局对于邮箱解释文字。邮箱被广告牌砸中,痛得忍不住俯下身来,但还是坚持了下来,终究没有倒下,它们随遇而安,在某种意义上,没有被修复过的邮箱看起来更有艺术感,更有故事感,经历了更多,划线词与“Having experienced a lot.经历了很多”意思相近。故选A。
根据第四段最后两句“Do we inspire you Take a picture with us to remind yourselves that we are all survivors and can persevere no matter what.(我们激励了你吗?和我们一起拍张照片,提醒自己我们都是幸存者,无论如何都能坚持下去)”可知,邮箱在风暴中坚持了下来,象征着面对逆境的巨大勇气。故选D。

Paragraph 1: The next day, they found themselves facing the immediate problem of finding water. The search for water soon drained their energy. They were about to give up when they heard a small sound, a splash of some sort. They ran as fast as they could and found a small stream-a lifeline in all the challenges. However, with time passing by, more challenges emerged -limited food, frightful night filled with wilderness sounds, and the uncertainty of survival in the wild. Their nerves were near the edge of breaking down after long hours of uncertainty in the wilderness.
Paragraph 2: On the third night, a distant engine sound broke the terrible stillness. Relief washed over the weary faces as they witnessed the approach of a rugged vehicle. Kevin’s dad stepped out to meet the group. The emotions that played across their faces - disbelief, gratitude, and overwhelming joy- mirrored the shared trouble that had forged a deep bond among them. Back home, Kevin’s dad said, “Good thing you told me those directions,” teaching them the importance of informing someone about plans. The experience turned into tales of courage and resilience, embedded in their memories as lessons for a lifetime.
