Han Qian, 35, is now responsible for recruitment(招募) at the Volunteer
Department of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee. Thirteen years ago, he was a
volunteer at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
“I’m honored to take part in two Olympics,” said Han. “Being a volunteer is
different from organizing them, though both are great experiences. Passion is
necessary for being a volunteer, which requires volunteers to be in high spirits and
warm-hearted. But being an organizer, they may face many new challenges because
more thinking and planning are needed in organizing volunteers.”
Because of COVID-19, volunteers need to be quarantined(隔离 ) after the test
events as well as after the Winter Olympics and Paralympics(残奥会 ). This means
3
{#{QQABbYAAogCAAoBAABhCEQXyCEKQkBCAAAoOREAIMAAAiQFABCA=}#}
they have to give up more time for this job. As around 90 percent of the volunteers are
university students, according to Han, this could affect their schoolwork. So Han’s

Han’s team worked with schools to recruit students. “For example, volunteers
from Tsinghua University are responsible for the National Stadium, while those from
Peking University take care of the National Aquatics Center. ”Han said. The cold
weather is another challenge, as some games will be held outdoors. The outdoor
volunteers need to have physical training, like 15-kilometer walks, to prepare for their
work. The organizing committee also provides hats, warmer pads and more frequent
shifts for them.
“Many volunteers have developed interest in winter sports because of this
experience,” Han said. “I’ve seen them post pictures of themselves skiing and skating.
I’m happy that the volunteering experience is meaningful for them.”

Dogs are known for their sense of smell. They can find missing people and
things. Now a study shows that the animal can even find bladder cancer(膀胱癌).
Cancer cells can produce chemicals with unusual smells. Scientists think dogs
have the ability to smell these smells, even in very small amounts, in urine(尿).
For example, a dog showed great interest in the growth of its owner’s legs. The
man was later found to have skin cancer. Carolyn Willis and some scientists trained
different kinds of dogs for the experiment. The study used urine collected from
bladder cancer patients(病人 ), from people with other diseases and from healthy
people. Each dog was tested 8 times. In each test there were 7 examples for the dog to
smell. The dog should show the one from a bladder cancer patient by lying down next
to it.
Their results later appeared on the British Medical Journal. In all, 36 bladder

cancer patients and 108 other people attended. During the training, all the dogs even
found cancer in a person who had been tested healthy before the study. Carolyn Willis
said dogs could help scientists find the chemicals produced by bladder cancer. The
information could then be used to develop machines to test for the chemicals. The
team also plans to use dogs to help find other kinds of cancer.

①Zoos are very popular with adults and children. But are zoos actually a good
thing
②Some people criticize keeping animals in zoos. In their opinion, animals often
suffer a lot for being enclosed. Even the best zoos can’t provide the environment that
animals have in the wild. It’s a pity that the animals living in the wild are caught, and
then kept away from their families. This leads many zoo animals to feel nervous or
sad. What’s worse, some zoo animals may even die earlier than their wild relatives.
③However, some people have different ideas. They think zoos can connect
people with animals, educate the public to protect animals and call on people to save
animals as well as their homes. Some zoos offer a safe place to those animals which
have been badly treated. Also, to support international breeding program, zoos have
special programs to produce more young animals, especially for the species (物种 )
which are in danger of dying out. In the wild, some of the endangered species have
trouble in finding partners and having new baby animals. A good zoo will provide a
safe environment for these species. Moreover, zoos also do research into animal
behavior and how to treat their illnesses.
④So, are zoos good or not It depends on how good the zoo is. It’s sure that zoos
have more advantages than their harmful effects. But it is understandable that many
people don’t agree to enclose animals for any reason.
