At the end of 2019, I learned that a software start-up, whose goal is to let the living communicate with the dead, was looking for applicants of its new project. Intrigued by what it was promising, I applied to experiment the software on my very-much-alive parents.
At first, I thought it would be just a fun project to see what was technologically possible. Then the pandemic (流行病) added some importance to the experiment. I was frightened that my parents might die, and that with the strict control on hospital visits at the time, I might never have the chance to say goodbye.
The first step of the experiment was an interview. My parents were asked questions by a technician for hours—about everything from their earliest memories to what they believe will happen after they die. Whether through pandemic-related concerns or a willingness to humor their daughter, my parents put up zero resistance. The company then took their responses and started to create the voice assistants. A few months later, my virtual parents arrived via email.
When I communicated with them through the app on my phone, my hands were shaking. I hadn’t seen my actual, real parents for six months. They told me personal stories I’d never heard. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own. It was fascinating.
Personally, I have mixed feelings about my experiment. I’m glad to have my virtual parents. They’ve enabled me to learn new things about my parents, and it’s comforting to think that those bots will be there even when my parents aren’t. On the other hand, I can’t help but find it sad that it took a stranger interviewing my parents for me to properly know the complex people they are. But I feel lucky to have had the chance to grasp that and to still have the precious opportunity to spend more time with them and learn more about them, face to face, no technology involved.
24. What does the underlined word “intrigued” mean in paragraph 1
A. Puzzled. B. Attracted. C. Accepted. D. Expected.
25. What was the author’s primary purpose of joining the project
A. To record her parents’ voices when they are alive.
В. To relieve the fright brought by the pandemic.
C. To learn more about the life stories of her parents.
D. To test out what the new technology might be like.
26. What can we learn about the author’s parents
A. They opposed joining the project at first. B. They went through many interviews.
C. They were patient and caring. D. They died because of the pandemic.
27. What dose the author realize in the last paragraph
A. Technology allows us to learn more about our virtual parents.
B. The development of technology has advantages and disadvantages.
C. New technology means never saying goodbye to our parents.
D. The real connection with our parents matters most.
C
Scientists continue to discover ways in which a lack of sleep affects our mental and physical health- now a new study reveals that a serious lack of sleep can even influence the way we see other people.
When we’ve gone without sleep, we spend less time fixing our eyes on others’ faces, the study shows. As that’s an important part of reading social signals from those around us, our relationships are likely to suffer. “Since facial expressions are helpful in understanding the emotional state of others, spending less time focusing on faces after serious sleep loss may increase the risk that you misunderstand others’ feelings, “ says sleep researcher Lieve van Egmond from Uppsala University in Sweden.
The study authors recruited 45 participants who went through a night without sleep, and another night with 8 hours of sleep, separated by at least a week. In each case, eye-tracking sensors were used the morning after to monitor the subjects as they looked at images of faces. A mix of expressions were shown on the faces: happy, angry, fearful. Participants were also asked to assess the attractiveness, trustworthiness of the faces they saw. When it came to face focus, there was a drop in duration (持续时间) between 6. 3-10. 6 percent after sleep loss, and this drop happened regardless of the emotion being shown. Overall, faces were regarded as less trustworthy and less attractive after a night without sleep.
“The finding indicates that sleep loss is associated with more negative social impressions of others, “ says neuroscientist Christian Benedict from Uppsala University. “This could result in less motivation to interact socially.”
It’s perhaps no surprise that a lack of sleep makes us less likely to want to engage with others, but the study adds some interesting data to the mix. Negative social impressions of people after sleep loss may lead to social withdrawal by those with sleep issues, suggest the researchers.
28. Lack of sleep may contribute to ____________.
A. misreading others’ emotions B. becoming angry and fearful
C. focusing on others’ faces seldom D. behaving in a different way
29. What did the researchers do while carrying out the study
A. Require participants to evaluate the expressions.
B. Divide participants into two groups.
C. Monitor participants during the whole course.
D. Ask participants to finish the experiment in a row.
30. What can we conclude from the study
A. People lack of sleep are more likely to stay at home.
B. The more we sleep, the more likely we are to interact socially.
C. The focus duration will drop less concerning happy faces.
D. People with sleep loss will have a bad social impression of others.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Lack of sleep makes us less attractive and trustworthy.
B. Sleeping loss impacts our mental and physical health.
C. Lack of sleep influences our social relationship.
D. Sleeping loss leads to paying little attention to others.
D
As the world’s oldest living organisms, trees have been our silent companions. Although they inspire a large quantity of fancy tales, the richness of what they say is beyond description.
The German forester Peter Wohlleben spent decades working and learning their secrets. Feelings are rarely applied to trees, but Wohlleben has done so without hesitation. According to Wohlleben, that humans do not speak the trees’ language does not mean they do not communicate. Trees are badly misunderstood even if they communicate with chemical and electrical signals.
Wohlleben claims that trees are creatures as human beings. In one of 50 cases, Wohlleben’s team sees the special friendships between trees, as they can distinguish between one individual and another. This means that trees do not treat all other trees the same. For instance, Wohlleben saw two old beeches standing next to each pared to the usual case, each one growing its branches turned away from the other rather than toward each other. This kind of partnership is well-known to foresters. They know that such tree pairs are really like a human couple. If they chop one down, they need to chop down both because the other will die anyway.
Trees were also found to keep each other alive in different ways. They pass food to nearby sick trees and send signals to warn others of dangerous insects. In one of his investigations, Wohlleben also discovered a beech tree cut about 400 to 500 years ago. The trunk is still alive and was found with green chlorophyll (叶绿素) under the thick bark. Since it has no leaves to create sugar, the only explanation is that neighbouring trees have supported this tree for more than centuries.
The trees that suffered through drought were found to consume less water in the spring so that they will have more water available in the summer months. This implies that a tree can learn and remember a drought its whole life, acting on that memory by being more cautious about its water consumption.
32. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To arouse readers’ interest.
B. To introduce a topic.
C. To present a new discovery.
D. To demonstrate a heated debate.
33. According to Wohlleben’s research, what can we learn about trees
A. Trees communicate in the same way as humans.
B. Trees can’t tell friends and enemies apart.
C. Trees are loyal to their partners.
D. Trees can keep each other alive within limited periods.
34. Why do some trees consume less water in the spring
A. Because they have more water available in summer
B. Because they have suffered through drought before.
C. Because they don’t need so much water in the spring.
D. Because they can depend on the support from other trees.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Mysteries of trees are unfolded
B. Trees are our silent companions
C. Trees can adapt to the environment
D. Trees can form special relationships

Poetry plays with sounds, words and grammar. 36 . Poetry uses colors, feelings, experiences, and images to paint a picture in your mind.
In Chinese classical poetry, the form is very important: the correct number of lines and the number of characters in each line. Poetry often follows special patterns of rhythm and rhyme. However, modern poets began to reject traditional structures for poetry in the 20th century. 37
During the Tang Dynasty, poems by Li Bai and Du Fu became very popular. Li Bai wrote poems celebrating things such as friendship, nature, and wine while Du’s most famous poems reflect on the effects of war on the people.
38 Americans were first introduced to classical Chinese poetry by American poet Ezra Pound (1885-1973). He translated 18 classical Chinese poems, mainly by Li Bai, into English. 39 From around 1910 onwards, European literature came to China when some famous writers began to translate both poetry and novels into Chinese.
Just like readers in the West, Chinese readers admire Shakespeare, John Milton and many others for their fine English poetry. The nature poems by William Wordsworth, Ode to the West Wind by Percy Bysshe Shelley, George Gordon Byron’s Isles of Greece, and long poems by John Keats have long been favourites.
Today, many Chinese people are becoming more interested in reading poems, no matter in what language they are written. 40 No matter how well a poem is translated, something of the spirit of the original work is lost.
A. Consequently, modern poems are totally different in styles and structures.
B. Translations can be good, but reading in the original language is better.
C. At about the same time, Chinese writers started reading more foreign poetry.
D. Outside of Asia, the study of Chinese introduced the West to Chinese poetry.
E. That makes poetry difficult to write but interesting to read.
F. So only reading in the original language can really help to get the works’ spirit.
G. As a result, most poetry today is written more freely, with lines of varying length.

From high up in his apartment building, Peter could see the river stretching in both directions. Every Saturday, Peter watched grandfather riding towards the building on his bicycle. But today, Peter knew that his grandfather wouldn’t come. Peter would not hear the ring-ring of grandfather’s bicycle bell. And there would be no Saturday afternoon picnic in the park.
Last week, grandfather had a hip operation. Now he needed a cane (拐杖) to walk—and Peter didn’t know if grandfather could ever ride his bike again. Peter sighed. London looked beautiful today, but Peter missed his grandfather. Would he ever again hear the ring-ring as grandfather approached
That’s when Peter had an idea. He was determined to provide grandfather with a picnic and a surprise. He grabbed his birthday money—10 euro (欧元) —from the top dresser drawer.
A few minutes later, Peter ran down the stairs of his building and burst into the afternoon sunshine. His bike was waiting for him. Peter put on his helmet and rode down the rough road.
Ring-ring sang his bicycle bell to warn walkers that he was approaching. He rode past the corner hardware store. He rode past the window washer who whistled as he worked. And he rode over a bridge. Peter rode two more blocks and then arrived at the market.
Buckets were filled with varieties of chocolates. Tables were piled with rounds of cheese. And Peter’s favorite-baskets overflowed with delicious potato chips, and rolls. All smelt nice, and his mouth watered. Then, he passed the toy store full of amazing toys and furthermore, he caught sight of what he had been dreaming of—a game player! The market seemed to be his paradise where everything attracted him.

Peter’s euros danced in his pocket, but suddenly he thought of the picnic and the surprise. He carefully selected Grandfather’s favorites , ranging from fresh fruits to various breads . When a shiny and beautiful bicycle bell came into sight, an idea struck him – this could be the perfect surprise! With his heart pounding, Peter rode to his grandfather’s house as fast as possible. The minute Grandfather opened the door, he presented the picnic and the special gift.
“This bicycle bell is for your cane! “ said Peter. The old man’s eyes lit up with surprise and joy. He took the bell and attached it to his cane, giving it a little jingle. The sound was music to Peter’s ears, and he knew that this would be the start of a new tradition, a new way for his grandfather to announce his arrival. They spent the afternoon in the park, enjoying their picnic. The market’s treasures could wait; what mattered most was the time spent with loved ones.
