Thomas: My name is Thomas. I come from the UK. I have always been interested in Chinese culture. I started learning Chinese at high school, and I enjoyed it so much that I continued studying it at the University of Leeds. We learnt to speak, as well as to read and write Chinese. Writing was the most challenging for me. We also studied Chinese literature, history, politics and economics. In my third year I spent six months studying in Shanghai. I lived with a Chinese family who spoke almost no English, and my Chinese friends told me I picked up a Shanghai accent!
Jenny: I’m Jenny, from Australia. I try to learn one or two new things every year, otherwise I get bored. This year I decided I would try to learn a little bit of Chinese. So I signed up for an evening course at the local community centre near where I live in Melbourne, Australia.
Jenny:I was pleasantly surprised that speaking was easier than I had expected, and by the end of the course I could say “Hello! My name’s Jenny.”, “How are you ” and other basic information about my job and family in Chinese. However, I still have great difficulty reading Chinese. I’m thinking of signing up for the next course.
Pedro: My name is Pedro. I’m from Argentina. Next year I’m going on a tour of China. I’m visiting the Great Wall in Beijing and the terracotta warriors in Xi’an. So I decided to sign up to learn Chinese through an online course to help me during my trip. My goodness, Chinese is tough! I think the hardest is the pronunciation. Getting the tones right—that’s so difficult for me! My online tutor is really friendly and encouraging, though. I still can’t read or write, but I can speak a little. I do wonder whether anyone in China will be able to understand a word I say!

Mary-Jo Saunders goes to kindergarten every morning, just like many other five-year-olds in New York. Today, she is learning a poem. What is special is that it is a Chinese poem and that she is able to recite it without an accent. Soon she is going to learn Chinese handwriting too. “Learning the world’s most spoken language might give Mary-Jo a head start in her future career,” says her mother Alison. “I think it’s good for her to stretch herself by listening to and pronouncing new sounds, as well as learning to read and write Chinese characters.”
More and more ambitious parents in the world are signing their children up for Chinese classes. Keen for their sons and daughters to succeed in life, they see being fluent in a second or third language as an advantage. Learning Chinese is becoming so popular that the language has been included in the education systems of more than 75 countries. Over 4,000 overseas universities offer Chinese language courses and about 25 million people are learning Chinese outside China.
It is easy to understand why Chinese is becoming so popular. Learning Chinese may help people get more job opportunities. China is already a global economic power, and its influence is growing. For example, there is China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which motivates many countries along the Silk Road to cooperate more closely. It has created thousands of local jobs, many of which need people with a knowledge of Chinese.

Another reason is that studying Chinese provides access to wonderful Chinese history and culture. Adam Turner, a school head teacher in the UK, cites this as one of the most appealing aspects of the recently added Chinese course. “Students love the mystery of China,” he explains. “They want to know all about its traditions, dynasties and art forms. Learning Chinese helps them see life from a new perspective and broaden their minds to the outside world.”

Chinese: A language for life
It has been found that around the world, the number of people learning Chinese at schools, universities, community centres or online is growing. The language has been included in the education systems of more than 75 countries. Over 4,000 overseas universities offer Chinese language courses and it's estimated that about 25 million people are learning Chinese outside China. Never has the demand been greater.
As a Chinese, it's interesting that foreigners find our native language fascinating. However, I can understand their fascination, because Chinese is a charming language filled with a long history, beautifully written characters, rich culture and considerable depth in its meaning. Any foreigner who masters the Chinese language would feel that it is a worthy accomplishment.

There are several other reasons why foreigners are choosing to learn Chinese. Tourists may choose to take courses in Chinese before their trip. By learning useful travel expressions, they can navigate their way around the city and carry out basic tasks such as ordering food or negotiating prices. Other foreigners might choose to study Chinese at a Chinese university so that they can apply for jobs that may require a good knowledge of the Chinese language. For example, the China Belt and Road Initiative has created thousands of local jobs in many countries along the Silk Road. Working together with Chinese engineers may require people who can speak Chinese. So possible job applicants would be motivated to learn Chinese as an additional language.
There is no doubt that learning Chinese will continue to be popular in the future. Knowing Chinese can lead to many opportunities for both Chinese people and foreigners. Moreover, learning Chinese can broaden people's minds and enrich their lives in many different ways.

Dear Henry,
In order to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, our school has held a cultural activity themed “The Beauty of Chinese Characters”. I’m glad to invite you to attend this activity.
It will be held in the stadium, on Tuesday. There are a lot of events in the activity, including watching movies about the development history of Chinese characters and writing ancient poems and so on. Participating in this activity will make you more interested in the Chinese language. As is known to us all, the Chinese language is playing a very important role in the world. Learning it well will help us to have a better understanding of Chinese culture.
Hope you can be present at this activity on time!
