Since it was completed in 1869, the Suez Canal has been one of the world's most important bodies of water and bases of the global economy. But the giant container ship that has been stuck in the waterway sparks a very modern problem: About a tenth of global trade passes through the Suez Canal, and it could be facing a week-long blockage.
The blockage originates from its vital location in geography—the importance of the canal stems first and foremost from its location; it is the only place that directly connects the waters of Europe with the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the countries of the Asia-Pacific. Without the Suez Canal, shipments traveling between those parts of the world would have to travel through the entire continent of Africa, adding large amounts of costs and extending their journey time a lot.
Dating back to history, caused by French interests and exploration, the Suez Canal was built over the course of 10 years by local peasants forced into labor. Financial troubles forced the Ottoman governor of Egypt to sell a controlling stake ( 股份) in the waterway to Britain in 1875; 13 years later, a multinational summit resulted in an agreement that the canal would be free for all countries to use, both in peace and war.
Nowadays, more than 80% of global trade by volume is moved by sea, and disruptions are adding billions of dollars to supply chain merzbank analysts said on Friday that the episode could cause oil to become more expensive for consumers because of higher tanker rates as a result of the incident.
24 . What effect did the blockage have on shipments traveling according to Paragraph 2
A .Decreasing the cost. B .Consuming less amounts of time.
C .Cutting off the connection. D .Extending the traveling route.
25 .What does the author tell us about the Suez Canal in history
A .French peasants were forced to build the canal.
B .British colonists played a leading part in building the canal.
C .The Ottoman governor contributed to the construction of the canal.
D .The canal was freely available to all countries after 1888.
26 .What message did Commerzbank analysts convey
A .Oil prices would be rising.
B .The incident caused the rise of the supply chain costs.
C .More than half of the global trade relied on sea transportation.
D .Consumers would have to pay more to travel across Europe.
27 .Which of the following is the text probably taken from
A .A research paper. B .A guidebook. C .A news report. D .A biography.

There are people for whom the motivation lies in their family or companions' duties. For some people, the purpose lies in a soul's spiritual awakening. Brent Clayton, a firefighter by profession, is such an individual who found his purpose early in life and kept working to fulfill it.
Born on March 3,1984, Clayton hugely felt the need to serve others. He followed his mission in life and acquired his diploma in public safety. The Process to Success. His idea was to join his learning into an accessible medium so others didn't have to waste years wondering what to do when applying to become a firefighter. After the success of the book, Clayton introduced candidates to a comprehensive test preparation and a learning suite to facilitate success throughout each stage of the selection process. This platform helped him as well as his candidates to work together for the betterment of themselves and ultimately society at large.

New fences, fresh floor coverings and plenty of paint ; home improvement has become the national amusement to kill time during the pandemic ( 流行病) as the nation has spent more time at home and rediscovered a passion for DIY after a decade of decline. The closing of pubs, restaurants and sporting fields, financial pressure and the need to adapt houses and flats to deal with changed circumstances, started a trend in DIY this year, particularly among 18-34-year-olds.
After years of falling sales, stores' closing and cost-cutting, B&Q—the DIY chain is hoping the tide may finally have changed its tough situation. Kingfisher, the parent company of B&Q, is investing in digital marketing, home delivery and new products to attract the imagination of the young generation.
Thierry Garnier, chief executive (总裁) of Kingfisher, has plenty of data to prove how consumers warmed to DIY again in 2020. It began in the spring with painting fences and decorating walls or cars. Sales of pressure washers increased by 80% at B&Q. People then moved on to gardening, setting up home offices and entertaining outdoors.
It has been the same story in some other countries. Demand for fencing, decorating wooden cabins in Continental Europe and the US has put such a stress on wood supply chains that sawmill (锯木厂) and producers are working hard to tackle the problem. Paint suppliers to B&Q are concentrating on the most popular shades, reducing the product range so they can keep up with the demand for high volumes.
But the big focus is on digital. As demand for home shopping rocketed during the pandemic, B&Q began using its stores to help pick and pack home deliveries. The group now handles 1.5 million orders a week. Online now accounts for 17% of sales—up from 8% before the pandemic and Garnier hopes to expand further.
32 .Why did DIY regain popularity in 2020 A .The pandemic made it a national pastime. B .The DIY chain tried to please the public.
C .Stores offered a discount on DIY materials.
D .Public facilities failed to meet people's needs.
33 .What can we infer about the comeback of DIY
A .It will soon go quiet again. B .It's welcomed only by the youth.
C.It has taken the world by storm. D.It offers companies chances to recover.
34 .What is B&Q's solution to the pressure from the sales boom
A .Narrowing the product range.
B .Specializing in new products.
C .Focusing on digital products only.
D .Using stores to handle home deliveries.
35 .What's Garnier's opinion about the prospect of online sales
A .Uncertain. B .Confident. C .Pessimistic. D .Cautious.

Learning a new language like English can be a challenge. 36 Classes are important, and so is disciplined practice. It can even be fun. Here are some guidelines to help you become a better English learner.
Study every day. Learning any new language is a time-consuming process, more than 300 hours according to some estimates. Rather than try and cram a few hours of review once or twice a week, most experts say short, regular study sessions are more effective. 37
38 Instead of focusing on one single task for the entire study session, try mixing things up. Study a little grammar, then do a short listening exercise, then perhaps read an article on the same topic. Don't do too much; 20 minutes on three different exercises is plenty. The variety will keep you engaged and make studying
more fun.
Read, watch, and listen. Reading English-language newspapers and books, listening to music, or watching TV can also help you improve your written and verbal comprehension skills. 39
Write it down. Repetition is key as you're learning English, so writing is a great way to practice. 40 By making a habit of writing, you'll also find your reading and comprehension skills improved over time. You may even discover you've got a talent for writing.
A .Keep things fresh.
B .Play vocabulary and grammar games. C .But with regular study, it can be done.
D .It doesn't matter whether you use a computer or pen and paper.
E .Non-native English speakers sometimes struggle with doing so.
F .As little as 30 minutes a day can help you improve your English skills over time.
G.By doing so repeatedly, you'll absorb things like speech patterns, accents, and grammar.

It was 1995, when people used fixed-line telephones instead of mobile phones for communication and people asked ways instead of depending on navigation systems to get around. I was in China for the first time. I was to meet a friend, Bruce, who had come to China a few months before to work in Jingzhou. I had never heard of the place, so I guessed it must be small.
Before I left for China, Bruce had told me his address over the phone. Now, I was confident that I could find the place with the address written on a piece of paper in my pocket.
It was not until I arrived at the airport in Wuhan and went to get the bus for the “small town ” that I realized the address note I wrote in English was useless. At the information desk of the bus service outside the airport, I spent as long as 5 minutes trying every possible American pronunciation of the word “Jingzhou ” with him repeating every single word with a confused inflection (抑扬顿挫). Finally, his eyes widened and it clicked. He turned to me and said something I didn't understand. I was not sure what he said, but he said it with confidence.
He ran outside gesturing for me to follow and put me on a bus. He did everything for me. I handed him some money and he took the proper amount and gave me the change. Then he told the bus driver where I was going. When the bus took off, I assumed we were heading to Jingzhou... but how could I know
I was informed via hand signals that I had now arrived at my desired city and now I just had to simply get to my friend's place. So I walked off to a stand of taxis and one driver greeted me ready to go. But when I handed him the address it was apparent that he didn't know where it was. After some discussion with other taxi drivers, he turned to put me in his taxi as if he had found a way out.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2 .请按如下格式作答。
Soon he pulled up at a building on which I was overjoyed to see my familiar English word: Hote

session ( 非 限制性定语从句). We all observed carefully how a mass of clay was transformed fantastically into a vivid artwork. He also encouraged us to make one of the twelve animal signs. English speaker. After the driver explained my situation, the check-in lady brought the hotel manager in, who could speak some English. I told her I was lost and needed to telephone my friend. She led me to a phone, where I gave her Bruce's number, which she dialed. When Bruce answered in English, she handed it to me. However, I had no way of describing where I was.
Bruce told me not to worry and asked me to wait for him to get a Chinese friend on the phone. I returned the receiver to the hotel manager and some time later she passed it to the taxi driver. While the two Chinese were talking, the driver's face lighted up, giving me the message that the problem was finally solved. We were soon on our way to meet my friend. The taxi driver whistled a song, feeling proud of being able to help. I was glad to be able to see Bruce soon who was preparing a big Chinese dinner for me!
