In Africa, the honeyguide birds can respond to human calls to lead people to honey—what scientists describe as a mutualistic interaction, or one that benefits both creatures. The birds tweet and fly from tree to tree to guide honey seekers to hidden bee nests, typically inside trees. Then, humans open the trees to find honey, and the birds can dine on beeswax, their favorite food.
Dogs have an excellent sense of smell, which is why the folks at Penn Vet Working Dog Center are training dogs to identify the smell of cancer using tissue and blood samples from people who suffer. The scientists hope to develop a way for dogs to screen samples first, then perform follow-up testing on the samples the dogs flagged—a system for spotting cancer in its early stages.

Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard the Titanic when it struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912, a mere 700 people lived on. Here is a story of the Titanic survivors whose stories are still haunting more than a century after the ship's sinking, revealing the true facts of the disaster.
A junior wireless officer aboard the Titanic, Harold Bride was one of the two people responsible for sending SOS messages to nearby ships, thus allowing the Carpathia to rescue the Titanic survivors.
He and another man on duty, Jack Phillips, raced to send SOS signals to nearby ships—but as the communications specialists, they knew that the closest, the Carpathia, would likely not arrive until the Titanic sank. They worked wildly until Captain Edward Smith came and told them they were relieved of duty; the ship had nearly lost power, and only two lifeboats remained.
They made a run for Collapsible B and were just getting it into the water when a wave swept across the deck (甲板), throwing both Harold Bride and the upturned boat into the ocean.
Bride and 15 others struggled into the waterlogged, sinking Collapsible B and survived until other lifeboats collected them and conveyed them to the Carpathia.
Once aboard the Carpathia, Bride got back to work and began helping the ship's wireless officer send messages from the other Titanic survivors.
When the Carpathia made it to land, Bride had to be carried ashore: he had injured one foot in the plunge into the ocean, and the other was frostbitten after a night in the Atlantic's icy waters.

“Time flies. Youth fades. Treasure each moment of your life , ” accompanied by guitar and drums, the Band for One, made up of five people, sang the lyrics (歌词) soulfully during a performance in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, on November 7,2020.
Behind the band, there was a picture of a young man named Philip Hancock shown on the screen. And he is the reason why they were all there. Hancock was a 27-year-old Australian who taught English in Chongqing. When he died in 2018 due to a disease, his parents followed his wishes and donated his organs.
The five people introduced themselves onstage. They are the ones who received Philip's organs. “Last November, the Red Cross officials told me Philip's parents mentioned during an earlier memorial service that he loved music and dreamed of having his own band one day , ” said Chen Xianjun, a recipient (接受者). Chen was instantly on board to form a band in memory of Philip, and so were the other four recipients.
Since they had no music experience, they had to start_from_scratch. From learning the guitar, to mastering the maracas and taking on the drums, they took time
out of their busy lives to practice over the past year. Peter Hancock, Philip's father, said after watching the band's performance, his biggest wish is for the five to enjoy their lives more.
Organ donation is not only the best way to honor a loved one, but also a remarkable way to save the lives of others. China faces a serious shortage of organs, with about 300,000 people waiting for organ transplant surgeries each year. But the good news is, more and more people have been signing up to be organ donors, showing the spirit of selflessness that Philip and so many others have shown.
28 .Why did the five people form the band
A .To compete in a singing performance.
B .To show their respect for Peter Hancock. C .To raise money for the local Red Cross. D .To express their appreciation to Philip.
29 .How long did it take the recipients to prepare for the performance
A .One year. B .Two years. C .Three years. D .Five years.
30 .What do the underlined words “start from scratch ” in paragraph 4 mean
A .lose interest in music B .practice from the very beginning
C .take part in training courses D .turn to some musicians for help
31 .What can we learn from the last paragraph A .Citizens are encouraged to donate organs.
B .Organ donation is the best way to save lives. C .The author thinks highly of organ donation.
D .Few people are willing to donate their organs.

For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.

A .To provide a creative way of learning.
B .To promote teachers' teaching skills. C .To get students interested in science. D .To invite students to care for plants.

Cayce Zavaglia is an artist with a unique transformation to her work. 36 Painting with tiny needles is not as fast as painting with a brush. 37 It takes two months—nearly 200 hours to complete a portrait.
38 Once she decides, she invites that person to her studio and takes hundreds of photographs. She studies the way the light falls across the person's face. After many hours of studying the photos, she chooses the perfect one for her portrait. Next, she enlarges the photo on a canvas (画布). Then, she matches the colors in the photo and the stitching begins.
Cayce starts with the hair and forehead, then moves on to the shoulders and clothing, and finally the face. The human face is what she most enjoys creating in her art. 39 In a portrait of her baby daughter, the skin appears soft and smooth. In a portrait of her dad, the stitches show a wrinkled and aging face.
Cayce believes her success depends on three things :her choice of colors ,the length and direction of the stitches, and her ability to make the portrait look true. She loves the surprise when people view her art. From a distance, people believe the portraits are painted. 40
A .She makes sure the person looks straight into her.
B .The biggest challenge is making the skin look real.
C .Instead of painting with a brush, she sews with a needle.

Just as many families do at a point, Catherine chose to add a new family member by adopting a pet. Shortly after her daughter Kate's birth, Catherine decided she wanted a close bond with a dog for Kate. Thus, Catherine called the dog shelter close by to inquire about adoption. After hearing about the available animals, she chose a Doberman Pinscher. Once they signed adoption papers, they named the dog Khan.
Catherine was hopeful this would provide valuable lessons for her baby, such as sharing, learning to love and responsibility to care for animals. She was looking forward to having the dog join the family.
Hearing of Khan's rough background, Catherine immediately loved the dog. She was overjoyed to bring this special dog back to her family. Of course, she realized there were risks involved. Well, the obvious risks from bringing a large, potentially dangerous animal to her young baby, Catherine pushed them aside. If she had not adopted Khan, he would have been killed just a week later. So, this was his new life and second chance, and the family was hoping for the best.
Everything began smoothly. They trained Khan during the first few days. However, everything changed on that fourth day when the dog acted completely out of character.
The fateful day began with the usual playtime in the yard. Although baby Kate had her parents watching from a distance, they did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Kate and the new dog had been making a habit of playing out back like this. However, things were different this day.
So what was actually happening out there The two were not being loud or crazy. They began running through the backyard grass together. Again, Catherine watched the two closely. Surprisingly, things had changed within an instant!
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

Text 10
A jellyfish is a soft creature that swims slowly through water. They don't have bones, brains, eyes, ears, and hearts like true fish. However, jellyfish do well without these body parts. They live in every ocean in the world. There are hundreds of kinds of jellyfish. The number of jellyfish keeps increasing.
Jellyfish also need oxygen to live. Their skin is so thin that oxygen can pass through it and enter their bodies. If you ever see a jellyfish, look at it carefully. You can even see its stomach through the skin.
All animals must protect themselves against danger. And when a jellyfish touches an animal or person, it gives off poison. If you go swimming in the ocean, watch out for jellyfish, get out of the water if you see them. If you see a jellyfish on the sand, don't pick it up.
Sometimes, hundreds of jellyfish appear at once. These large groups are called “swarms” or “blooms”. Recently a “swarm” of jellyfish covered one end of the
Gulf of Mexico.
Why are there more jellyfish now than in the past There are two possible reasons.First, adult fish and jellyfish eat much of the same food. In some places, too many adult fish have been caught by humans. This leaves more food for jellyfish. Second, farmers use fertilizer on their fields. When it rains, some fertilizer gets washed into rivers. It flows into the oceans. There, more plants grow and the oxygen
in the water is reduced in the water. Jellyfish can live on less oxygen than fish. 第二部分 阅读
