Perhaps the most eagerly awaited play in recent Broadway history, the nine-time Olivier Award-winning West End hit Harry Potter and the Cursed Child made the trip across the ocean in 2018 and opened its doors to crowds of excited Muggles in New York.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the official eighth story in the Harry Potter world and the first to be presented on stage. The production is highly characterized by amazing tricks designed by Jamie Harrison, bringing stage magic to life before your eyes.
Rowling, along with John Tiffany and Jack Thorne, developed the story of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but Thorne took the lead. From Steven Hoggett’s amazing dance moves, making it easy to exchange between scenes (场景) and character entrances, to John Tiffany’s wildly creative directorial choices in scenes about the Hogwarts Express or the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a masterful piece of theatre.
The show used to be longer and it was a two-part show, clocking in at more than five hours total. Since theatres shut down and reopened following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Broadway show is now just one, which runs 3 and a half hours, but all the timeless characters and magic tricks still await. The two-part version (版本) still runs in London and elsewhere.
The recommended age for the show is Ages 8+. Children under 5 are not allowed. Younger children might have trouble sitting through the show, and the storyline contains something that might be scary. Overall, though, the play is family-friendly like the books are, and kids will be drawn to the magic.
Lyric Theatre! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now performed in one part. Get tickets on Broadway now.
21. What is the key feature of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
A. It is based on a popular book.
B. It is the first Harry Potter story staged.
C. It moves from the West End to Broadway.
D. It contains impressive magic performances.
22. Who plays a significant role in creating the story of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
A. J.K. Rowling. B. John Tiffany.
C. Jack Thorne. D. Steven Hoggett.
23. How is the Broadway show different from the London version
A. Main characters. B. Shorter running time.
C. Age requirement for audience. D. More special effects.

Cheng Yuyan never expected that the interest group “We Love Strolling in the Park”, which she created by accident on Douban, a Chinese social media platform, four years ago, would now reach 100,000 members.
According to the 25-year-old from Shanghai, creating this group was just an accidental decision, and she didn’t spend much time in it afterwards. However, park lovers from all over China and even overseas have voluntarily made it their gathering place. People share park experiences, post photos taken in parks, and offer recommendations and reviews about parks.
“The growth of this group is the result of organic (绿色的) development, just like a park, where people naturally come together. The rise in member numbers also shows the increasingly important role that parks are playing in people’s lives,” Cheng said.
Within this group, there is a saying called “20 minutes for parks”, which comes from a theory (理论) in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research. According to the theory, spending 20 minutes in a park daily helps to reduce stress, no matter whether people exercise in it or simply take a walk.
With the help of social media, the theory has been receiving popularity among a great number of young people in China. Huang Bingbing from Shenzhen, Guangdong province, is a follower of this idea.
She said that Shenzhen has many parks between office buildings. Over three years ago, when she was still working at an advertising company, she used to visit the small park downstairs during her weekday lunch breaks. “On the grass, I could connect with living plants and animals, allowing me to refresh my mind and recover from the stress of the workplace,” Huang said.
24. What did Cheng Yuyan think of her interest group
A. It surely attracted people. B. It was a serious decision.
C. It took her much effort. D. It got an unexpected result.
25. What does Cheng want to express in paragraph 3
A. People’s love for parks. B. The rise of the group number .
C. People’s changes of lifestyles. D. The benefit of green development.
26. Why is the theory becoming more popular among the youth
A. The pull of the online media. B. Their need for more experience.
C. The heavy load of their work. D. Their easy acceptance of new ideas.
27. What can we learn from Cheng Yuyan’s story
A. Hard work pays off. B. Great minds think alike.
C. A small thing makes a difference. D. Success comes from joint efforts.

A study by researchers at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has shown that the use of cool paint coatings in cities can help people feel up to 1.5 degrees Celsius cooler, making the urban (城市的) area more comfortable for work and play.
Cool paint coatings contain additives that reflect the sun’s heat to reduce surface heat. They have been used as one way to cool down the city area and mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, a phenomenon in which urban areas experience warmer temperatures than their outlying surroundings.
To date, most studies of cool paint coatings have been tested in some models, and understanding of its application in real-life context is limited.
Now, NTU researchers have conducted a first of its kind practical study. The team coated the roofs, walls, and roads in Singapore and found that by comparison with an uncoated area, the coated environment was up to two degrees Celsius cooler in the afternoon, with people heat comfort level improving by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Lead author Dr. Kumar Donthu, who completed the work as a research fellow at Energy Research Institute, said, “Our study provides evidence that cool paint coatings reduce heat build-up and cool the urban environment. This is a small solution for cooling that has an immediate effect, compared to other choices. Moreover, by reducing the amount of heat absorbed in buildings, we also reduce indoor air-conditioning energy consumption (消耗). Findings from the study are not just for cities in Singapore where it is hot all year round, but for other urban areas around the world too.”
The study, published in Sustainable Cities and Society in March, supports the NTU 2025 strategic plan, which seeks to deal with human’s great challenges on sustainability (持续性) and speed up research discoveries that reduce human impact on the environment.
28. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Reduce. B. Form. C. Avoid. D. Explain.
29. What do NTU researchers focus on at present
A. Coating experiments in laboratories.
B. Changes of temperature comfort level.
C. Real-world testing of cool paint coatings.
D. Coating materials in various environments.
30. What can be inferred about the use of cool paint coatings according to Dr. Kumar Donthu
A. It’s simple but workable.
B. It’s effective but short-sighted.
C. It’s wide-ranging but demanding.
D. It’s environmentally friendly but expensive.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. NTU Study: Urban Heat Island Effect
B. Cooling Cities: NTU’s Paint Solution
C. Big Challenge: Urban Heat Reduction
D. Cool Paint: The Key to Urban Comfort
D
Does forgiveness go against our human nature To address this, we need to ask a further question: What makes us human Simply put, people hold two contrasting views on humanity. The first centers on control and power. In an early paper on forgiveness, Droll (1984) wrote that human nature leans more towards aggression (攻击性) than forgiving allows. Those who forgive are against what they’re built for, much to their harm. He believes that forgivers are risking their own well-being as they show forgiveness to others, who might then take advantage of them.
For the second view, we see respect and love, in the sense of serving others, in the work of Lewis, Amini, and Lannon (2001). They present the scientific argument that we need both to receive love from and offer love to others. From this second viewpoint, forgiveness plays a key role in the overall health of both individuals and communities, both physically and mentally, because one of the outcomes of forgiveness, shown through scientific studies, is the reduction of hatred and the reestablishment of harmony.
Given that control and disrespect can affect a person’s psychological (心理的) and relational well-being, the first approach does not seem workable as a way to live. Given that forgiveness has been shown in numerous studies to increase well-being, it follows that the second approach seems more effective, both from the reasoning of philosophy and the supported theories from social science. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious interactions. Consider, how well has slavery (奴隶制) worked as a way of social harmony
As an important warning, when we take a Classical Realist philosophical viewpoint, that of Aristotle, we see the difference between possibility and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the ability to forgive, but we have the chance to learn and get better at it. The actuality of forgiving, its actual application in conflict (冲突) situations, grows with certain training.
32. What is Droll’s idea about forgiveness
A. It is a sign of weakness.
B. It is a part of human nature.
C. It is a threat to one’s well-being.
D. It is a natural response to aggression.
33. Why does the author mention “slavery” in paragraph 3
A. To blame the unfairness of the system.
B. To illustrate the harm from over control.
C. To stress the importance of management.
D. To promote the idea of harmonious interactions.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward forgiveness
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Uncertain.
35. How is forgiveness developed according to Aristotle
A. Born nature. B. Social upbringing.
C. Learned practice. D. Outside pressure.

This new job paid better, had a cooler title, and the HR guy was so nice…but now it’s disappointing and you want your old job back. This feeling is called “shift shock.”
“ 36 We’d see the office and the people, and you’d kind of sense what kind of place it was,” leadership coach Shayla Thurlow said. “Now, when we’re interviewing over Google Hangouts, we’re not really able to see people and get those feelings.” She suggested job searchers look at employee activity on LinkedIn or find a present employee and drop them an InMail. 37 Why is this position accessible Is someone leaving this role If so, how long were they in the role But if you have taken the role and it just doesn’t feel right anymore, Thurlow has some advice:
See if it can be saved. Sometimes it could just be a misunderstanding over responsibilities or something else that can be corrected. “But if you get in and you find that it’s a poorly presented, undersold–or oversold–opportunity, that’s the time to go back and look at your search and see what you found that you didn’t want,” Thurlow said. “You’re either going to leave this job or you’re not. So just keep asking: What else can I do 38 ”
Rethink your wants. Are you experiencing something known as fading affect bias (偏差), when you forget what you disliked at your last job “ 39 If you’re feeling stressed because you’re in that situation and feel stuck, slow yourself down,” said Thurlow. “Give yourself some space because you want to set yourself up to make a really good decision. Then, identify the source of your discontent and ask yourself, is it the job or is it that you just went through a big change ”
40 “It’s never too soon, but just make sure you’re making the right decision. If you do move on, be prepared to talk about it and be frank with your next employer,” Thurlow said.
A. If all else fails, leave.
B. Avoid being too hard on yourself.
C. In the old days, we went in for an interview.
D. You should also ask the hard questions, Thurlow added.
E. There are three main signs that you could be experiencing it.
F. That puts you in a place of choice, which is very powerful.
G. The feeling might be a result of the position, the company, or both.

After retiring, I had time to clean the storeroom. The old doors were hard to open, like I was unsure about my new life. Inside, it was a mess, with old belongings from years ago and even a family of foxes had lived there.
I pulled on work gloves, then moved a box of motor oil out of the way, intending to clear some space. I reached all the way back, and my hand hit something hard. What could that be I pulled out a round metal tin (罐). With one finger, I cleared a thick coating of dirt from the top to uncover a green background with white flowers. Could the tin hold a hidden treasure
Little by little, I removed the cover until it suddenly came off and fell to the ground. I held my breath. Inside were several yellowed envelopes. I opened one, and a sense of despair swept through me.
Just then, my wife Peg walked in. “What’s that ”
“Seeds (种子),” I said. Nothing but seeds.
Peg came over to examine the tin’s contents. “Look, here’s a letter.” She held up a faded envelope with a three-cent stamp and a postmark of May 13, 1940. Before I was born! The letter was addressed to the original owner of our house.
“‘I am sending you the seeds of the hibiscus (木槿) you admired when you stopped at our tourist home last year,’” Peg read. “‘Plant when the ground becomes warm, and do not be alarmed if they do not come up for several weeks — they are slow to grow.’”
“Huh,” I said. “Eighty years old. I wonder if they’ll still grow ” I had several hanging pots and a few flower beds, but I was no expert. I took a plastic box where I’d planted potatoes, shook the hibiscus seeds out of the envelope, pushed them into the soil and set the box in the sun.
“What are my chances ” I asked my neighbor, an experienced gardener. “Not very good,” he said, “but maybe… if they were packed right and kept dry and dark.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The possible version:
With the seeds planted, I checked the box every day, eager for any sign of life. Each morning, I would step into the yard, hoping to see a tiny shoot pushing through the soil. But days turned into weeks, and still, there was nothing. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of disappointment. Maybe my neighbor had been right after all. Maybe these seeds were just too old to come up. But I refused to give up hope. I continued watering the box diligently, wishing the seeds would live up to expectations and grow into lively hibiscus flowers. As the days went on, I began to lose faith. Maybe it was foolish to believe that something so old could still bear fruit.
Just when I was about to give up, something astonishing happened. One morning, as I went to check on the box, I noticed a tiny green shoot peeking through the soil. My heart leaped with joy as I realized that the hibiscus seeds were indeed growing. And as the days passed, the seedling grew stronger and more energetic, its leaves spreading out in the warm sunlight. Peg and I marveled at the wonder that even something this old could still grow and be pretty cool. It was a testament to the endurance of nature, a reminder that even in tough times, life finds a way to flourish. Like the little hibiscus, I would keep growing too.

(18) Plus, this 10 cm of snow that’s already on the ground is supposed to become 25 cm by 4:00 p.m. So, you know what that means. After lunch is finished, the late afternoon classes are all called off, (19) and everyone can go home. But please don’t get too excited — road conditions are dangerous. So, for all seniors who drove to school, please don’t drive home unless you have a car with wheels meant for snow. And for all other grades, please wait for the buses. For everybody, no matter what your plans are, please call your parents to tell them what you’re preparing to do. (20)
