Seoul is a modern city full of delicious food options(选择)as well as great attractions,
historical sights, and places to shop.
Best time to visit
The best month for sightseeing in Seoul is during the warm weather between summer and
early fall.
Getting around
In Seoul, you have three main forms of transportation: train, subway, and taxi. The fastest
option to get around Seoul is the Airport Railroad Express train. It has two options: the Express
and the All-stop. While the All-stop option is cheaper, it’s about 15 minutes slower than the
Express. Seoul has one of the largest subway stations in the world with 14 lines. It may seem a
bit awful, but once you get used to it, it’s pretty easy.
Another option to get around Seoul is to rent a car. This is one of the least used options as
Seoul has a convenient public transportation system.

Fifty years ago, the well-loved musician Bob Dylan played at the Newport Folk Festival
and was widely booed(嘘声). The audience may have been unhappy, but Dylan’s performance
helped change the direction of music and culture in the United States.
The mid-1960s were a time of great change. One such place of change was the world of
folk music. Bob Dylan became a symbol of change when he moved from acoustic (原声的) to
electric guitar.
Rock music historian Elijah Wald has written a new book about the change. It is called

“Dylan Goes Electric”.
“There was a moment in the early 1960s when you could look at the Billboard charts and
seven of the top 10 albums were folk records. And Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, the Kingston
Trio, all had huge, huge, huge number-one records.”
And then this happened: The “British Invasion” introduced the world to the Beatles and
grew a huge fan base for rock music. “That worried many folk musicians,” says Elijah Wald.
They hoped that Bob Dylan would come to the rescue. However, a new Dylan sound came
from the stage.
Bob Dylan had gone electric, and the followers of folk music were not pleased.
“When Dylan went electric, I think one of the issues was the feeling that — wait a minute,
he’s gone over to the enemy.”
Folk lovers had looked to Bob Dylan to save their movement from rock and roll. But,
author Wald says Dylan felt differently about the music.
“Dylan had always liked rock and roll and Dylan didn’t think of rock and roll as stupid
music.” In fact, Dylan was a Beatles fan. He later said that from the first time he heard the
Beatles he knew “they were pointing to the direction where music had to go.”
Beyond the music, Dylan’s performance that night also marked a turn in American culture.
24. How did the audience feel when Dylan played at the Newport Folk Festival
A. Unsatisfied. B. Respectful. C. Uncaring. D. Excited.
25. Which is TRUE about American music world in the early 1960s according to Elijah Wald
A. Great changes had taken place in folk music.
B. People had grown sincere love for rock music.
C. Folk music was once a huge mainstream pop trend.
D. Bob Dylan was the best American musician at that time.
26. What did folk musicians and followers expect Dylan to do
A. Introduce the world to the Beatles. B. Change folk music for better.
C. Play rock and roll against the Beatles. D. Recover the glory of folk music.
27. What will the author most probably talk about next
A. Dylan’s beliefs in the new direction music should go.
B. Dylan’s deep love for the Beatles, rock and roll music.

Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted,
new research suggests.
In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that
the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors for three years were 23 percent
less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed.
The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the
start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each
school day for three years.
The parents of these children were also encouraged to join their children for outdoor
activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other children, from
another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of
the kids in the intervention(干预)group became nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of
the kids in the other group.
It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight,
the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light
intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine(多巴胺)of the
eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain(抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is
associated with nearsightedness.
Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time
outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it’s important to protect
kids' skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.
28. What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day?
A. They attended an extra class of outdoor activities.
B. They just continued to do their usual activities.
C. They spent one hour in doing eye exercises.
D. They participated in outdoor activities with parents.

“You’re so smart!” This encouraging response to children’s math performance is
commonly heard.
Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging
children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken
their math achievement over time.
Parents who make comments connecting their children’s performance with personal
qualities like IQ are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast, parents who
connect their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using
process responses.
For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to
their children’s math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were divided into
two groups across a year to measure their math achievement.
The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give
process responses focused on their children’s strategy use and efforts rather than their IQ or
other personal qualities.
In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can’t

be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations for their children
give both responses. While responses focused on strategy and efforts are not related to any
achievement results, children who receive more responses about their personal qualities —
especially, related to failure — are more likely to avoid harder math problems, show higher
levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.
Because person responses mean poor math change in children over time, researchers
suggest parents limit this type of responses at home. Another recommendation for parents is to
think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them
to respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability
may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and
enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to encourage children.
32. Which of the following is an example of process response
A. What works well for your study B. Running is in your DNA.
C. You are a lucky dog. D. Why are you such a math talent
33. What can be learned from the study results
A Parents prefer to give more process responses.
B. Person responses can discourage children from learning math.
C. Process responses help with children’s math achievement.
D. Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety.
34. What do researchers advise parents to do
A. Ignore children’s math problems.
B. Protect their own beliefs.
C. Stress children’s performance.
D. Limit person responses.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Strategy Children Use to Learn Math Helps.
B. Responses to improve Children’s Math Performance.
C. The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters.

How to mend a broken friendship It may be hard, but fixing a broken friendship will make
it even stronger than before. Here are some tips that will be useful.
Be the one to reach out before the other.
36 Let it be you this time. It will show them that you want to be friends again, and
you’re serious about resolving things. Think about how you can reach them. Depending on the
person and the severity of your argument, you may need to try a few different ways to get in
touch.
37
If your friend refuses to see or speak with you, or visiting them in person isn’t an option,
you may want to just back off for a while. Your friend wants space and that should be respected.
Use the time to reflect on the situation and prepare what you want to say. Don’t push your friend
if it’s clear they want space. It will only upset them and make them frustrated with you.
Talk about the problem honestly and openly.
Explain what you feel is the problem and be honest about it. Then ask them to do the same.
Let them talk for as long as they need to. Really listen and don’t interrupt them. 38
Apologize to them and accept their apology.
Even if you didn’t do anything and you believe the situation is their fault, opening with an
apology sets the tone. You could say “I’m really sorry things have gotten to this point. I want
things to be better between us.” If you did wrong them in some way, apologize to them sincerely.
39
Avoid restarting an argument.
It’s important that you don’t say or do anything hurtful during this conversation. 40
so do your best to keep things peaceful. If things get heated, don’t allow them to escalate.
A. Let go of your anger or frustration.
B. Respect your friend’s need for space.
C. If they apologize to you, accept their apology.
D. Come up with a plan for rebuilding the friendship.

(Text 1)
W: Your painting is fantastic, Roger!
M: I’m happy you like it. I’m going to enter a competition. Here’s the form. Could you help me fill it out please
My hands have paint all over them.
W: OK.
(Text 2)
W: Excuse me. I want to have my hair cut, but I can’t find a barber shop.
M: I know where one e on—I’ll show you.
(Text 3)
W: Hey, Todd. This is Sarah. My flight has been delayed. I won’t be there on time. Can we postpone the meeting
M: No. The clients are catching a flight right after the meeting.
(Text 4)
W: Jane’s car was in the repair yesterday, so she had to take the bus home.
M: If I had seen her on my way home, I would have given her a ride.
(Text 5)
W: Have you tried playing City Driving yet
M: Yes, but I was a bit disappointed with it, actually.
W: Me too. But the songs that play while you’re driving add to the action at least.
M: I only got to the fifth stage of the game—the racing itself was fairly exciting.
(Text 6)
W: We reviewed your application. You are a perfect fit for our restaurant. Just curious, how many languages do
you speak
M: I used to be able to speak six, but I lost two of them completely because I didn’t practise at all.
W: I am still impressed. I can only speak two. Can you speak the rest fluently
M: Yeah. They are all close to native levels.
(Text 7)
W: I need a photographer for Sally’s birthday. Any recommendations
M: Isn’t she celebrating it this Friday I don’t think it’s possible to find one in a day.
W: She postponed the celebration for three days.
M: I see. Can Carmen help
W: No, she won’t be back from Ireland until next Friday. I also asked my neighbor Sara. She is always busy with
work.
M: Did you ask Helen
W: Great idea! She usually has time.
(Text 8)
W: What are you reading
M: A book about traveling rules in foreign countries.
W: Why
M: I’m going on a business trip next week.
W: Where are you going
M: To our branch offices in Italy and Saudi Arabia. I’m also planning a trip to France for sightseeing after that.
W: That should be interesting.
M: Have you been to Saudi Arabia
W: No. I’m scheduled to go there next month. Give me some tips after you return from your trip.
(Text 9)
M: This morning we’re talking to Carla Smith, who’s made some changes to her lifestyle. Carla, the first thing you
did was change the way you worked. Why
W: I used to have a busy job. It was interesting, so I never got stressed or needed time off like some of my colleagues,
who became ill. I traveled all over the world. Then, suddenly I realized I was living in hotels and I thought,
“You know what I’d like to spend more time in my own house!”
M: And now you run your own business.
W: Yes, and I choose which hours I work. I can stop when I want to. And I still don’t go on holidays often—but
that’s my choice instead of my company’s.
M: Do you do more exercise now
W: I spend about the same amount of time exercising as I did before. However, instead of doing it between work
and dinner, I get up at 5 am and exercise then. I’m into yoga, because it relaxes my body and mind.
M: You’re still a busy person. Do you have any time-saving advice
W: Many people think checking emails or messages on the bus to work or school and making a list of things to do
can save time. But the thing that works well for me is having lots of clothes which are similar, so you don’t
have to think about what to put on in the morning!
(Text 10)
M: In a forest in Minnesota, a fire starts and quickly spreads. At the Minnesota Fire Center, Mary Locke takes
the call and then the other fire rangers go into action. The helicopter crew sends information about the fire
back to the Fire Center. And then it’s the turn of the crew of the CL215 to take off. It is a firefighting plane.
They are going to pick up water from this lake. The CL215 is flying at 140 kilometers per hour now. The pilot
must be very careful. The plane picks up water from the lake. This is the most dangerous time for the crew.
But the pilot does his job and picks up more than 5,000 liters of water. Then it’s time to put out the fire. The
pilot has to fly low over the trees to hit the fire. He also needs to wet the ground in front of the fire so it can’t
spread. The water drops on the fire. It’s a good hit! But the fire is a big one. The crew has to drop water 20
times to put out the fire. At last, it’s time for the fire rangers to go home... until the next time.
