School Bus Safety in the United States
Each school day, millions of children ride school buses. Do you know that the school bus is one of the safest vehicles on the road Less than 1% of all traffic deaths involve children on school transportation vehicles. However, children are more at risk when approaching or leaving a school bus. It’s important for you to understand school bus safety.
Stop for School Buses
When you see a school bus slowing down or stopping, it’s not just the bus that you need to have your eyes on — but the surrounding area, too. Children wait at least several feet away from a bus and often cross the street when they’re boarding or getting off the bus. This is why you must stop for school buses, and don’t attempt to pass.
Illegal School Bus Passing
Illegal school bus passing poses a significant threat to children and others on the road. In every state, it is illegal for you to pass a school bus while the stop-arm is extended and the red lights are flashing.
Understanding School Bus Lights
Learn the school bus laws in your state and always follow them, as well as the flashing lights that school bus drivers use to warn you.
Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.
Red flashing lights and extended stop-arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving, before you can start driving again.
21.What should you especially pay attention to when a school bus stops
A.Its driver on duty. B.The direction in which you pass it.
C.Kids getting on or off it. D.The way to follow closely behind.
22.In which case is it legal for other vehicles to pass a stopped school bus
A.After it has moved. B.Before it begins moving.
C.While its stop-arm is extended. D.When the red lights are flashing.
23.Who is the text intended for
A.Parents. B.Drivers.
C.Teachers. D.Students.

Kennedy says she looked at Moon and said, “Hey, girl, maybe you want to share this ”
“And the relief on her face — and you could see it on my face — and it was mutual (相互的). And yeah, absolutely incredible to share a medal with Katie Moon. You know, we’ve been friends for so long, so it’s super special,” Kennedy told reporters after the final.

How much of your monthly grocery list ends up in the garbage A new study reveals the average American spends nearly $1,500 per year on food they’ll never eat.
A recent survey of 2,000 Americans reveals the average shopper wastes $1,493.93 on food per year. That’s almost a fifth of their grocery bill after every shopping trip. One tenth of respondents claim they “never” purchase food they don’t end up eating, while three in 10 say this is something they “always” do.
Half of respondents prefer to head to the grocery store alone, and when they do, half are more likely to stick to their list and 36% are less likely to buy food they don’t want or need.
Keeping the list in mind is important, as 38 percent are more likely to let food be wasted if it wasn’t originally on their shopping list. Seven in 10 add that when they go to the store on an empty stomach, they’re more likely to buy foods they won’t eat. So they don’t do that that way. Some respondents appear to be in a wasteful cycle when it comes to food waste. Nearly half usually buy and end up wasting the same food every month because they think they’ll get around to eating it.
“We can all do better to limit food waste by sticking to grocery lists and, when we get home, prioritizing eating our foods that are perishable, like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products” says Avocado Co-Founder and CMO Mark Abrials in a statement.
Three-quarters feel guilty about throwing away uneaten food because it’s a waste of money — and 48 percent feel the same, due to the harm food waste causes to the environment. “When it comes to food waste, nobody is perfect,” Abrials adds. “But in order to consider our environmental impact, not to mention wasted money, we think it’s essential to be thoughtful about everything we purchase — whether that’s food, mattresses or other goods.”
28.What percentage of food do people buy but never eat
A.About 10%. B.About 20%. C.About 30%. D.About 50%.
29.What is the shopping habit of the majority of respondents
A.Doing shopping alone. B.Avoiding shopping while hungry.
C.Sticking to the shopping list. D.Trying to buy fewer dairy products.
30.Which of the following can replace the underlined part “are perishable” in paragraph 5
A.Go bad easily. B.Are rich in nutrition.
C.Are easy to produce. D.Keep fresh for a long time.
31.What does Abrials want to express in the last paragraph
A.Less doing shopping means less food is wasted.
B.Treasuring food is treasuring the environment.
C.It’s worth spending more money on food safety.
D.Environment protection is as important as food.
D
Flinging brightly coloured objects around a screen at high speed is not what computers’ central processing units were designed for. So manufacturers of arcade machines invented the graphics-processing unit (GPU), a set of circuits to handle video games’ visuals in parallel to the work done by the central processor. The GPU’s ability to speed up complex tasks has since found wider uses: video editing, cryptocurrency mining and most recently, the training of artificial intelligence.
AI is now disrupting the industry that helped bring it into being. Every part of entertainment stands to be affected by generative AI, which digests inputs of text, image, audio or video to create new outputs of the same. But the games business will change the most, argues Andreessen Horowitz, a venture-capital (VC) firm. Games interactivity requires them to be stuffed with laboriously designed content: consider the 30 square miles of landscape or 60 hours of music in “Red Dead Redemption 2”, a recent cowboy adventure. Enlisting AI assistants to churn it out could drastically shrink timescales and budgets.
AI represents an “explosion of opportunity” and could drastically change the landscape of game development. Making a game is already easier than it was: nearly 13,000 titles were published last year on Steam, a games platform, almost double the number in 2017. Gaming may soon resemble the music and video industries in which most new content on Spotify or YouTube is user-generated. One games executive predicts that small firms will be the quickest to work out what new genres are made possible by AI. Last month Raja Koduri, an executive at Intel, left the chip maker to found an AI-gaming startup.
Don’t count the big studios out, though. If they can release half a dozen high-quality titles a year instead of a couple, it might chip away at the hit-driven nature of their business, says Josh Chapman of Konvoy, a gaming focused VC firm. A world of more choices also favors those with big marketing budgets. And the giants may have better answers to the mounting copyright questions around AI. If generative models have to be trained on data to which the developer has the rights, those with big back-catalogues will be better placed than startups. Trent Kaniuga, an artist who has worked on games like “Fortnite”, said last month that several clients had updated their contracts to ban AI-generated art.
If the lawyers don’t intervene, unions might. Studios diplomatically refer to AI assistants as “co-pilots”, not replacements for humans.
32.The original purpose behind the invention of the graphics-processing unit (GPU) was to ________.
A.speed up complex tasks in video editing and cryptocurrency mining
B.assist in the developing and training of artificial intelligence
C.disrupt the industry and create new outputs using generative AI
D.offload game visual tasks from the central processor
33.How might the rise of AI-gaming startups affect the development of the gaming industry
A.It contributes to the growth of user-generated content.
B.It facilitates blockbuster dependency on big studios.
C.It decreases collaboration between different stakeholders in the industry.
D.It may help to consolidate the gaming market under major corporations.
34.What can be inferred about the role of artificial intelligence in gaming
A.AI favors the businesses with small marketing budgets.
B.AI is expected to simplify game development processes.
C.AI allows startups to gain an edge over big firms with authorized data.
D.AI assistants may serve as human substitutes for studios.
35.What is this passage mainly about
A.The evolution of graphics-processing units (GPUs).
B.The impact of generative AI on the gaming industry.
C.The societal significance of graphics-processing units (GPUs).
D.The challenges generative AI presents to gaming studios.

The days when art was an Olympic sport
Did you know that creating works of art used to be an Olympic competition 36 In the first year, Walter Winans became the first and the only Olympian to win medals for both art and sports. Despite this seemingly optimistic start, the idea of the arts being included in the Olympic Games soon met with disinterest, finally resulting in the removal of the art competition from the Olympic Games.
37
The idea to include art in the Olympics came from Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who was the founder of the International Olympic Committee, which created the modern Olympics. Coubertin believed that the arts and sports were linked and was impressed by anyone who had a firm command of both a sport and an artistic discipline(项目).
Why aren’t the arts included in the Olympics today
For starters, only amateurs were allowed to compete in the arts part of the Olympics. 38 Having artists of average quality competing while only the most competent athletes were allowed to compete created a dramatic divide and gave the impression that the arts were not as important as sports.
Secondly, works of art created had to have sports as the subject matter. 39 Limiting the subjects also contributed to making the arts part of the Olympic Games boring to the general public.
Finally, one of the biggest reasons was that the arts are subjective. Sports can be judged by time and distance, making it easy to determine who is the winner. 40 This difficulty in judging a definite winner resulted in the arts part becoming a non-competitive exhibition that ran for the duration of the Olympic Games.
A.Why was art made an Olympic discipline
B.What is a discipline in the Olympic Games
C.This rule made the objects produced seem really boring.
D.The arts, on the other hand, are not quite so easy to judge
E.However, the arts part of the Olympics Games was soon abandoned
F.This means that many famous artists were banned from participating.
G.For 36 years, from 1912 to 1948, artists participated in the Olympic Games.

Before seven o’clock one Saturday morning, a large crowd had already gathered at the stadium. David sat at the starting line, his gloved hands holding his wheelchair. With his heart beating, the boy wondered if he would be able to complete the race. His classmates were all there to support him. From a distance, he could see them holding up big banners (横幅) which screamed: WE ARE WITH YOU! ALL THE WAY, DAVID! Heartened, he smiled and waved back. He was not going to let them down.
Born with a severe condition that left him paralysed (瘫痪) from the waist down. At six, he underwent several surgeries to improve his condition. As a result, he was able to attend school and even took up sports to help strengthen his bones and muscles. Then, he fell in love with wheelchair racing. Unfortunately, he did not have a lot of coordination (协调) or strength but he had a will to keep going. Once, without warning, his condition took a turn for the worse and it almost destroyed his pursuit of his passion.
One day, David’s teachers encouraged him to compete alongside his non-wheelchair schoolmates. Unsure and yet grateful for the opportunity, he thought he should give it a shot. By the time the race was about to begin, the sun had risen. David was glad that he was well prepared. Adjusting the cap on his head and his gloves, David was all ready to protect himself from the heat and the strong strokes to his wheelchair. David’s eyes followed the starter who was waving a red flag. As soon as the gun was fired, David was off. The entire stadium erupted into thunderous cheers.
David pushed forward with all his strength, his hands holding the wheels the whole time for the long-distance race. His wheelchair rolled steadily out of the stadium, passing the shop houses. Despite doing everything he could to keep up with the other competitors, David fell behind.

W: Good afternoon, boys and girls. I’m glad to share my experience in English learning with you. I hated languages at school. I just wasn’t interested in learning, so I never did my homework and I was always bottom of the class when it came to exams! Maybe it wasn’t her fault, but I really didn’t get on with my teacher. She seemed to think I was a stupid young girl. Things started to change when I got my first job, though. I spent my first two years in the Sales Department, and I had to speak English on the phone almost every day, which wasn’t easy. I didn’t really have enough time to go to class, so at first I tried to study on my own. I also persuaded an English-speaking friend to give me some private lessons and I started to make progress. I don’t know when it was exactly that I realized my English was good enough to do First Certificate, but I did... and I passed! So, I don’t hate English any more. In fact it’s made quite a big difference in my life!

23.Who is the text intended for
A.Parents. B.Drivers.
C.Teachers. D.Students.

Overhead, the sun continued to burn in the cloudless sky. Gradually, David felt tired and thirsty. His head felt as if it were on fire as the sun was burning through his cap, which was consuming his energy. He was beginning to feel weak. David pushed on, and the heated metal of his wheels burned into his hands. With each passing minute, he was breathing harder. Every single push also made his arms and shoulders ache badly. Despite this, he never thought of stopping.
He was determined to overcome every single challenge. Removing his cap and throwing it away, he gathered up all his strength and pushed hard forward. Just at that time, the crowd shouted again, “Go, David, go!” Then, he felt as if he were flying at an unstoppable speed. Ten minutes later, the tape was finally coming into view. Delighted and grateful, he went past the ribbon. The entire stadium was filled with victorious screams because David’s persistence paid off.
