It happened today, which we never want to happen, but we've been preparing for it for a whole school year. A tornado touched down(登陆)near our school.
I wasn't even in the classroom at the moment. I had taken a student with me to the workroom to help gather something for a test. When the emergency alarms went off, immediately I grabbed my student's hand and ran as fast as I could back to the classroom.
I never imagined needing to put our tornado practice into use. I never imagined actually needing to line my students up against the wall and have them crouch down( 蹲 伏 )with their knees and heads touching the ground, hands on the backs of their heads. Their hearts beat so fast that they couldn't catch their breath. Their fear-filled eyes looked up at me as they asked if their parents, grandparents and fiends were going to be fine. Never could I imagine that the silence would come over the whole schoolyard, with hundreds of students gathered in the classrooms of one building
Other teachers and I tried our best to comfort our students, assure(使确信)them of their safety and promise them everything would be all right, though we truly didn't know what the result would be.
Today has done something bad to me, and I am sure it has done harm to the hundreds and thousands of teachers in the local areas and surrounding areas. But at the same time, I am very proud, surprised and pleased with how my students behaved. Never have I seen they follow directions so quickly and quietly. Even though tears were in eyes and hearts were beating fast, my students were brave beyond their age today. They were able to be 100%calm and collected(镇静的)the whole time and for that, I was greatly moved.

Sleep like a giraffe
What's your favorite sleeping position On your back On your side How about standing up Unless you happen to be a giraffe, I'd never have thought anyone would choose the last one. But now thanks to a Japanese company, it could actually be a real competitor.
Giraffenap is invented to allow the user to take a rest while sanding when he/she feels tired of sleepy with the purpose of improving performance at work. It's about the size of a phone booth (电话亭)and can even blocks out noise. In an introduction to the nap(小睡)box, the company says that it will allow the user to be refreshed in just 20 minutes.
But why does it have to be standing The company explains that studies have shown that sleeping while standing allows people to reach a sleep state in which they breathe easily. When they wake up, they can feel the influence of a nap without having to sleep too much. And they can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy (头晕目眩的) . Also, making the box stand upright means that it can save much floor space.
Now, I know what you're thinking—wouldn't a person just fall down if he tried to sleep while standing Of course not. Inside the box are four points to support the body—head, buttocks (臀) , legs and feet. That means he can rest his arms, legs and head in the box while still remaining upright.
Giraffenap has been made in two different styles—an extremely modern and unusual one named "Spacia" and a wood-covered one named "Forest". They have been on sale in January. 2024, so I hope one day you'll pick your favorite design and try sleeping standing up—just like giraffes do.
43. What is the main purpose of Giraffenap
A. To encourage people to protect wild animals.
B. To prevent people from feeling dizzy after taking a nap.
C. To let people know giraffes' ability of napping while standing.
D. To improve people's performance at work after a quick standing nap.
44. Why does the company believe sleeping while standing is beneficial
A. It enables users to save much money.
B. It prevents users from falling out of bed.
C. It allows users to reach a deeper sleep state.
D. It helps users breathe more easily during the nap.
45. How does the author answer the question raised in paragraph 4
A. By explaining how the box supports the body parts.
B. By recommending a new way of keeping safe for users.
C. By suggesting that falling down is common inside the box.
D. By comparing the box with other traditional napping methods.
46. What is the author's attitude towards Giraffenap
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Unclear. D. Negative.
D
Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of our planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of oceans and seas. Scientists say these changes may have an effect on many sea animals—from very small fish to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is a better way to sense their environment than light. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Sounds help fish and other sea animals survive.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each either. The noise comes from shipping traffic, underwater oil and gas exploration and other noisy human activities. For many sea animals, their efforts to communicate are being masked by sounds that humans have made. Experts explain the term masking, which happens when one or more noises in the water block sound that is important to an ocean animal's lie.
Experts say that effects of noise on sea animals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The stress from human noise might also affect the immune(免疫)system. Many sea animals are showing higher levels of stress because of noise. Also, the overall number of sea animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record fewer animals singing and calling than in the past.
When people think of threats(威胁)facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics and overfishing. But noise pollution is another necessary thing we need to consider. When it comes to something humans can do for the ocean, we need to talk about how to make it quieter. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. You can reduce or turn off sound at once. It's not like plastics or climate change, are much harder to undo(消除).
47. Why is sound important for ocean animals
A. They use it avoid hunters.
B. They use it to sing and dance.
C. They use it to see their environment.
D. They use it to communicate with humans.
48. What does the underlined word "masked" in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Shocked. B. Showed. C. Covered. D. Protected.
49. What can we infer from the passage
A. Swimming in the sea will also cause noise pollution.
B. Noise does more harm to sea animals than humans realize.
C. There is little that humans can do to reduce noise pollution,
D. Plastic pollution is the biggest threat facing oceans and seas.
50. What is the best tile for the text
A. The Importance of Oceans and Seas
B. The Biggest Threat to Oceans and Seas
C. The Communication Methods of Sea Animals
D. The Effects of Noise Pollution on Sea Animals

Children’s Games in Ancient China
During ancient times, children didn’t have a smart phone, iPad or computer to have fun. Instead, they came up with some interesting games to play in their childhood. Let’s take a look:

My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of the carelessness, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly annoyed by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed a car pulled over(停靠)to the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He got a flat(瘪了的轮胎).
My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a neighborhood nearby. He said that this had been a bad week for him: earlier he had gotten into a car accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would be stuck if we didn’t come along. After we finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did it. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to help.”
What I loved most was watching my brother through this process. He was able to turn his mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help which I totally missed! Does rain make you sleepy If so, you’re not alone! Many people say the sound of raindrops hitting the window can put them right to sleep. In fact, people often turn on recordings of the sound of rain to help them fall asleep at night. Why does rain have this influence on people
There are a few reasons why a rainy day might make you sleepy. One is the lack of sunlight. When sunlight shines on the human body, it makes people feel more awake and cheerful. The lack of light on a rainy day can have the opposite influence—people may feel sleepy or a little depressed.
The sound of rain also plays a part. Rain is pink noise. A study found that pink noise reduces brain waves. Experts believe this makes it a possible sleep aid. Rain isn’t the only example of pink noise in nature. Other examples include blowing leaves, wind, and the sound of your own heartbeat.
Of course, rain isn’t the only type of weather that has an influence on the human body. During the winter months, many areas see less sunlight. Many people experience low spirits during this time. Have you ever noticed that more people get sick during cold months That’s because illnesses like the flu grow and spread easier when it’s cold outside.
The opposite is also true. People often experience lower blood pressure in summer. Increased sunlight can lead to a mood boost(情绪提升). Some researchers also believe spending time outside on a pleasant day can increase creative thinking.
So if you’re lucky enough to have sunny weather today, try spending some time outside! You never know how it could influence your mood.
23.What does the underlined word “depressed” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Sad. B.Excited. C.Happy. D.Energetic.

A.It can make people feel tired. B.It is a kind of man-made sound.
C.It may help people fall asleep. D.It can only be heard by humans.
25.What can we learn from paragraph 4
A.In summer, many areas see less sunlight.
B.Illnesses don’t grow when it’s cold outside.
C.In winter, more people are likely to get sick.
D.Only rain can have an influence on the human body.
26.What is the author’s advice to readers
A.Have enough sleep. B.Go out and enjoy the sun.
C.Pay close attention to ourselves. D.Record and listen to natural sounds.
Ants have the ability to find out cancerous cells (癌细胞) in humans, which has been discovered by a new study, suggesting that they could be used to find cancer in the future.
Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that Formica fusca (丝光褐林蚁) has a well-developed sense of smell. “They were able to tell cancerous cells from healthy cells in human,” limited experiment showed. “But more tests must be carried out before they could be used in hospitals,” the team said.
To do their research, the scientists did the tests with 36 ants. First, they let the ants smell some cancerous human cells. This smell was then linked with a reward of sugar solution (糖浆). In a second step, the researchers offered the ants two different smells. One was a new smell of healthy cells and the second was still the smell of the cancerous cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers made them smell different cancerous cells. As a result, the scientist found that ants could judge between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous cells.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animals’ sense of smell to find cancerous cells. “Dogs are also good at finding something with their noses. However, training dogs to do so requires several months to a year. On the other hand, insects can be easily raised. They are cheap and hundreds of them can be trained with fewer times,” the researchers pointed out.
“This study shows that ants are able to learn very quickly. The method can be used for other tasks including finding danger or other diseases,” the researchers added.
27.Why is Formica fusca able to find cancerous cells
A.It is smart and can learn quickly.
B.It has developed a good sense of smell.
C.It is able to find healthy cells in humans.
D.It has been used in hospitals to cure cancer.
28.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.The time of the tests. B.The result of the tests.
C.The way the scientists did the tests. D.The reason why the scientists did the tests.
29.Which of the following is NOT an advantage of insects compared with dogs
A.They are cheaper. B.They are easy to be raised.
C.They can be trained more quickly. D.They have a sharper sense of smell.
30.What’s the purpose of the author writing the text
A.To suggest ants are in great danger now.
B.To prove ants are more important than dogs.
C.To show ants and dogs are both humans’ friends.
D.To introduce ants will be more useful than imagined.

My Mom hates to cook. She’d rather ride her motorcycle or practice rock climbing. She also spends a lot of time with me. Every morning, Mom takes me to school by motorcycle. Sometimes I’ll come home to find her climbing the side of the house.
As her daughter, I used to feel embarrassed that my Mom was no different. But now I am proud of her.
It all started with a cooking project. Every student in Mrs. Maitland’s class was supposed to create a homemade dish, and then present it at school the following Tuesday morning. Mon and I spent hours in the kitchen. We tried jelly-filled hot dogs, baked ham with chocolate sauce, and hard-boiled eggs rolled in coconut. We finally agreed on a chocolate cake with bright green pepper sauce. I was satisfied. It beat hot dogs, anyway.
The big day came. Our parents appeared, bringing many tasty dishes. Finally I saw Mom empty handed! I met her at the door. “You forgot it, didn’t you ”
Mom’s eyes opened wide. “I’m sorry. I...” She couldn’t finish her apology. A loud alarm cut her off.
Mrs. Maitland shouted. “Fire! Fire! Everyone out of the building!”
We all headed for the stairs and gathered at the parking lot. Smoke started to go out of one of the third-floor windows. Mom held my hand tightly. I forgot about my cake.
Suddenly, we heard a cry. We looked up and noticed Danny Patterson was blocked in the burning building!
Mom disappeared. She got her climbing tools from her motorcycle and walked quickly towards the building. She climbed the huge pine tree next to the school.
At the top, she started to throw her weight back and forth. The tree swung towards the window, and she hopped onto the window ledge (窗台) and into the building.

One of the main differences of being a teenager is what people expect from you. You’ve probably already noticed this.
When you were a little kid, people had pretty simple expectations, like:
—Listen when you’re being spoken to.
—Eat your vegetables.
—Be polite to your parents and other adults.
—Don’t lie.
But now that you’re a teenager, this really begins to change. Adults will start (they’ve probably already started) treating you like a junior adult. This can upset you at times because you won’t always like being treated like a junior adult.
But it can also be pretty cool because it’s fun to realize you’re on the road to adulthood:
—Adults will expect you to have conversations with them.
—Adults will expect you to do your part to help.
—Adults will expect you to make decisions and deal with the results.
—Adults will expect that you don’t want to be treated like a little kid.
Do you see what a major change this is It’s HUGE! Really, it is all about two things: responsibility and freedom. You want them both. Adults (parents, teachers and relatives) will start to give them to you, although probably not as quickly, or as much, as you’d like.
We encourage you to enjoy this shift. Show the adults in your life that you can be trusted with responsibility and freedom, and they’ll finally give you more.
38.When you were a little kid, people expected you to be ________.
A.honest B.polite C.healthy D.all of above
39.It is fun to realize you are becoming an adult, because ________.

41.What is the passage mainly about
A.The major changes in being a teenager.
B.The adults’ expectations to the teenagers.
C.The relationship between parents and children.
D.The advice to both adults and teenagers.
Pablo Picasso is one of the most famous artists in the world. When his paintings are sold, they usually cost millions of dollars. Now an art museum in Canada has used a special kind of x-ray to help them find new secrets in one of Picasso’s famous paintings, La Miséreuse Accroupie, or The Crouching Beggar.
We know some artists paint pictures on top of other pictures. At one point in his life. Picasso did this often, probably as a way to save money. People often call this time Picasso’s “Blue Period”, because he used a lot of blue in his paintings.
People at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) thought that Picasso’s painting The Crouching Beggar was painted on top of another picture, but they did not know exactly what. Using x-rays, they learned that Picasso had painted his picture on top of a landscape painting (风景画).
Picasso turned the landscape painting on its side and used some of the outlines (轮廓) of the old painting when he made his new painting. The people from the AGO worked with scientists at Northwestern University. These scientists used x-rays in a special way to test the painting.
The x-ray images showed more things of the landscape painting. But they also gave another surprise. They showed that at first Picasso had painted this woman with her arm out, holding a piece of bread. But in the final picture, he painted over her arm, so that all you can see is her coat.
Scientists and people who study art are happy about this new way to use x-rays. It is much cheaper than the old way. The machine is also much easier to move around. Some people think that there are many other secrets that can be known by looking at other paintings in this new way.
42.What can we know about Picasso
A.His paintings are not popular.
B.He is the most famous artist in the world.
C.He liked to use a lot of blue in all his paintings.
D.He used to paint pictures on top of other pictures to save money.
43.What did the scientists find about The Crouching Beggar using x-rays
A.It was cheaper than the traditional ways.
B.It was painted on top of a landscape painting.
C.People can’t see the beggar’s coat in the final picture.
D.Picasso didn’t use the landscape painting when he painted this one.
44.What can be a suitable title of the text
A.X-rays Show Picasso’s Secrets
B.Picasso and the Landscape Painting
C.The AGO and Picasso
D.The Woman in The Crouching Beggar
45.Where is the text probably from
