Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal. This man-made waterway—known in China as Da Yunhe is 1, 700 kilometers long and some parts of it are more than 2, 000 years old. It links (连接) the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It’s the longest man-made waterway in the world.
The Grand Canal was built as a way to transport grain (谷物) from the rich land in China’s south to cities in the north. In fact, it’s not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers linked together. It’s still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport grain and many other types of things.
Now the Chinese government is doing new work on the Grand Canal. It is making parts of it deeper, so bigger ships can use it. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not as much in the north. The canal will carry millions of liters of water from the south to the north.

For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient. It could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practiced at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year. This movement is called migration(迁徙). Most of them migrate to find a place that can feed themselves or with warmer environment. One of the most mysterious migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly(帝王蝶).
Every autumn, millions of butterflies begin a long and difficult journey. Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometers south. However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the University of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch butterfly is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to measure(测量)the position of the sun. These two pieces of information — the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky —allow the butterfly to choose the right way to go. Finally, it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.
The answer to the mystery of the butterfly’s amazing ability comes at a time when it is in serious trouble. Its population has fallen by as much as 90 percent in the past few years. Sadly, human activity is the main reason for it. In many of the places where the butterfly can be found, people are hurting the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals. As a result, baby monarch butterflies have nothing to eat.
Luckily, people have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for the monarch butterfly to feed on these years. If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again.

More than one third of the homes in the United States, Canada, and Australia have dogs. Almost one fourth of the homes in England have dogs. In each country, these dogs come in all shapes and sizes.

五、阅读判断
Have you noticed that time seems to pass more slowly when you’re waiting in a long time But when you’re playing with your friends, hours seem like minutes. Of course, time is always passing at the same speed — but why does it sometimes feel different
A study from the Journal of Neuroscience can tell us the answer. Lead author Masamichi
Hayashi and his research team found that it has to do with neurons(神经元)in our brains. Those neurons are sensitive(敏感的)to time.
The researchers measured the brain activity of 18 adults who were asked to look at a picture on a screen for a period of time. They were then asked to guess how long they’d been looking at the picture. No one could answer correctly when they were asked to stare at the picture for very long or very short periods of time.
After looking at their brain activity, the researchers found when the time-sensitive neurons receive the same stimulation(刺激)(such as staring at a screen) again and again, they finally get “tired” and don’t work properly — it doesn’t matter whether this period of time is long or short. However, other neurons still work normally, causing an imbalance(失衡)in the way that we experience time.
When you stand in line or repeat the same task for many times, such as doing math homework, your time-sensitive neurons get tired and cause you to feel like time is going slowly. But when you’re doing something more fast-paced(快节奏的), such as playing soccer, your experience of time is opposite. Either way, you can’t always trust your brain when it comes to your experience of time.
根据短文内容,判断句子正(T)、误(F)。
46.Hayashi’s study is about why time always passes at the same time.
47.In Hayashi’s study, the 18 adults were asked to draw a picture on a screen first.
48.Time-sensitive neurons feel tired when they work for a very long time.
49.From the last paragraph, doing different things makes our experience of time different.
50.We may read the article in the science column(栏目)of the newspaper.
六、阅读还原5选5
Every living thing needs to reproduce. Reproducing means creating more members of your group. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds(种子)to other areas.
____51____
The simplest way is gravity(重力). Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. ____52____ Apples spread this way.
____53____ Dandelions are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its “wings” help it fly farther from the tree.
____54____ The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole. When the seed leaves the animals, it’s in a new place.
____55____ Some seeds have a special smell that attracts ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. Then leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.
选择恰当的句子补全短文,使文章内容完整、通顺。
A.Ants also help spread seeds.
B.That helps move the seed even farther away.
C.Some animals help plants spread their seeds.
D.Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
E.Other plants use wind to spread their seeds.
