When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠)in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. He hung his head, trying to avoid eye contact with me. It was a tricky moment, calling for a good choice of words. Having thought it over, I mentioned some events which won people’s praise for his determination and perseverance. His face began to lighten. He added that even the judges thumbed up at him. The whistle went off and the competitors began to take their places. To my joy, David slowly rose to his feet.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. David stood firmly in his position, ignoring anything around. Pushing forward without balance, he was left behind. However, when he came into sight, the spectators burst into thunderous cheers and applause. Inspired by the enthusiasm and encouragement, David quickened his pace in high spirits. It turned out that he achieved his best record ever. Seeing his confident smiles, I sighed in relief. With the power to conquer himself, he could conquer anything on the way to a promising future.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

(2024届河南省部分市高三下学期第二次质量预测)Isla and I were studying in the same school. We had been friends since we were six years old. I took Isla as a smart, funny friend, but not all students at our school did, especially the girl students. Girls in our school wore fashionable branded clothes, but Isla sewed hers and her curly hair and thick glasses made her look like a fish, which made her stand out like a sore thumb(招眼).
For me, sometimes I felt embarrassed to be around Isla, particularly when students said rude words about her hair, clothes, glasses—even about the fact that she got really good grades. Isla always seemed to be able to ignore what other students thought, but I couldn’t. I began to distance myself from her.
Our school had a tradition—there was a talent show every spring. Students would sing, dance, play musical instruments, and do whatever they could to show their talents. Being our graduation season in this senior school, this year’s talent show would be obviously different. It would be a huge night.
Ava, who was an outgoing girl, invited me to be on her dance team. “We win the talent show every year, and we expect a satisfactory graduation this year,” Ava said to me excitedly. “We need a new dancer. But only you, not her!” Ava pointed to someone behind me.
I didn’t need to turn around to see who she meant. “Oh, I see,” I said quietly. Ava had hardly headed out when someone tapped on my shoulder. It was Isla. When I saw her confused face, it was like waking up from a dream. Isla asked me eagerly, “Emily, are you going to take part in the talent show ” I hesitated without response. “That’s great, Emily!” Isla told me without waiting for my answer that she was also going to participate this year. I couldn’t believe what I had heard. I started to worry about her when I imagined that she was in front of a huge crowd, and that everybody would laugh at her.
Time passed quickly, and I had barely seen Isla since then. For me, I had to practice hard every day with Ava and the team to keep up since the other dancers had already known the steps.

Ultimately, it was my turn to perform, and I felt extremely nervous. I didn’t want to be regarded as different from the others. Isla walked to me and hugged me tightly. “Come on, Emily!” Isla encouraged me. “I believe you will do great because you are a wonderful dancer. Don’t care too much about what others think. Just trust yourself.” Soon, I took my place on the stage. I remembered every step and every move. When the music was over, the crowd burst into cheers. At that moment, I felt like a dancing queen!
I stepped off the stage and expressed my thanks to Isla, who was ready to sing. I was a little worried at the beginning because the crowd became restless. Luckily, Isla ignored it. I stood up, shouting, “Isla, you are the best!” Her homemade dress was shining in the light, but her eyes were clouded with tears. When Isla’s singing died down, all the students were still lost in her unique voice. Some even began singing like her, and then more. Their singing resounded around the hall. I rushed to the stage after her performance, hugging her cheerfully. That was enough! We could never be distanced.

(2024届河北省承德市部分高中高三下学期二模)My two-year-old daughter was lovingly squished(挤)
between a stack of groceries in one of my two shopping carts. Shopping once a month was a well-planned process. My list was organized so that I wouldn’t miss even one item. I knew the aisle, order, and cost of each item.
A gentleman in a suit stood behind me with three items in his hads. He looked up at his watch, then at me and smiled. I’d already let a person ahead of me with a single item. While my daughter was behaving well, I knew I’d pushed her longer than her endurance promised to last. Still, I felt for the man; he obviously had to be somewhere, and he’d be behind me a good long time.
“Why don’t you go ahead of me ” I said shifting the cart backwards. “You only have a couple of items.
“Thank you,” he replied appreciatively, stepping ahead of me.
My daughter gave him a broad smile. “Heh wo,” she said in her sweetest voice.
“Hello,” he replied, taken off guard by her friendliness. His face lit with pleasure.
As the belt moved forward, I started unloading my cart. His few items were ahead of mine separated by a red marker with the store name on it. I was only halfway finished unloading the first cart when a realization hit me. My husband had borrowed my bank card the night before and I couldn’t recall him putting it back in my wallet. I hurriedly dug out my purse and opened my wallet. My heart dropped. He hadn’t returned it.
The gentleman in front of me had paid and was picking up his groceries.
“I’ve forgotten my bank card. Could I pay with my phone ” I asked the cashier hopefully.
“I’m sorry. We only accept credit card or cash. The cashier looked down the lane, disgusted at the amount of groceries. I’m sure she was predicting she’d have to put items back on the shelves.
“It will take me an hour to run home and an hour back. Can you just put my stuff on the side please “I was discouraged. All my careful planning hadn’t helped. The hour and a half of shopping left me exhausted and I wasn’t sure how my daughter would handle another two hours in the car.

Just then, the gentleman in front of me smiled at me. His eyes were shining with kindness and empathy. Without a second thought, he turned to the cashier and said, “I’ll cover her groceries.” I was surprised by his generosity and struggled to find words to express my gratitude. As he swiped his credit card, a wave of relief washed over me. It was a small act of kindness, but it meant the world to me in that moment. With tears welling up in my eyes, I thanked him heartily feeling overwhelmed by the goodness of strangers.
The next morning, my family knocked at the gentleman’s door. We wanted to personally express our gratitude for his selflessness and repay his kindness. As he opened the door, we handed him a bouquet of flowers and a heartfelt thank-you note. He was visibly touched and invited us inside for a cup of tea. Sitting in his cozy living room, we shared stories and laughter, realizing that this chance encounter had brought us together. At that moment, I realized that sometimes the greatest blessings come in the form of unexpected friendships.

(2024届河北省衡水市董子高级学校、昌黎第一中学联考高三下学期4月模拟预测)With a knee in need of replacement, Cindy Tutko was facing a long and challenging trek(跋涉)through the Atlanta airport while heading home to Florida about a month ago. She had just left Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after visiting her son, Jamie, and his family. She arrived at Terminal C in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest, and needed to get to Terminal F for her next flight. But the trains were down.
So, she started walking.
“She had actually fallen that day.” said Jamie. “And she, like, put herself into tears with how much pain her knee was in. When I was taking her to the airport, I could tell she was hurting.”
“I had a big, heavy suitcase that I was carrying, and that’s what was weighing me down.” she said. “It was full and heavy, very heavy.”
Michael Wright, who happened to be from Lafayette, Louisiana, spotted Cindy limping(跛行)along. When he initially offered to help her, Cindy declined, saying.—Oh, no, no. I’m good.” But Michael wasn’t going to take no for an answer. He grabbed her suitcase, put it on, and said. “Let’s go.”
“Within seconds really, I realized he was genuinely being nice.” Cindy said. “He was just a nice guy. He was helping me out.” For 55 minutes. Michael carried Cindy’s bag and walked right alongside her, through Terminals C, D, E, all the way to F.
“Right before we got to the gate, he seized my hand, looked at me and said. ‘You looked like my mum,’” Cindy recalled and she responded with a hug and a little kiss on his cheek, telling him, “Your mum would be proud of you.”
Cindy texted her son to tell him all about that “nice guy” from Lafayette. Jamie immediately turned to social media asking for help finding him.

(2024届名校教研联盟高三3月联考)It’s the Saturday, 1:00 am, and Stormy, my dog, and I were going on a pre-dawn bird-watching adventure. The weatherman predicted fog, but as we hit the road, it’s clear. Along our journey, I stopped at a petrol station, ensuring Stormy was safely locked in the truck.
“Stormy, hang tight,” I whispered, stepping out into the night air.
Back on the highway, as we were near the marshlands, a heavy fog began to swallow everything. At a sharp bend, my truck hit soft ground, and I lost control. “Oh, no!” Panic set in as the vehicle slid off the road with a bang, falling down a steep bank and into the water.
In the strange silence that followed, I was floating inside the car, gently carried downstream by the canal. “Come on, door,” I said, switching uselessly at the handle. It won’t move; the electrical system had shorted out due to the water. “I’ve got a glass breaker,” I reminded myself, reaching for the tool in the center part.
With each failed attempt to break the window—the glass bouncing back at me—I felt a growing sense of urgency. Water moved over the floorboards, cooling my feet. “Stormy, stay calm,” I said, lying down to kick at the window with all my strength. But my efforts only met resistance.
As the water level rose threateningly close to the ceiling, fear clawed at my heart. In a last effort, I dived behind the seat for my toolbox. “Got to find something solid.” My hands brushed against the cold metal toolbox, then the fire extinguisher(灭火器). “This might work.”
“Here goes everything,” I thought, holding the extinguisher and hitting it against the window. The impact resounded through the car, but the glass holds firm. “Not yet,” I begged under my breath, as the extinguisher bounced harmlessly away.
The water kept rising, and so did my fear. A voice inside me screamed to give up, but another thought pierced through—Stormy. “For Stormy, I can’t quit.” Just then, I sensed a pause in the water’s rise.
An unspoken sound said, “You have more time. What will you do ”

“I’ll fight harder,” I promised aloud. I jumped underwater again to swing the extinguisher with renewed energy. Gasping for air, sinking, swinging...the pattern repeated until suddenly, there’s a crack! “Yes! There’s a hole!” I burst through the broken window, swimming to the back door. “Stormy, hold on!” I shouted as I realized it’s locked too. Gathering every bit of strength, I forced the door open, freeing Stormy from the sinking truck.
Exhausted, we caught the now flooded vehicle, waiting for daylight. I said, “We need to get out of here, boy.” With dawn’s arrival, I spotted what could be a ladder about 70 yards upstream. Despite the freezing cold and tiredness, I managed to reach the ladder and pulled myself up, Stormy following closely behind. This experience strengthens my belief in the precious gift of time—time to live and time to value the life we’ve been given.

(2024届安徽省池州市高三二模)Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else. Whenever we had time, we’d sit together and talk about dogs. “You’re so silly, Jake,” Josie would say. “Bulldogs(斗牛犬)are scary.” “Hah. Golden retrievers(金毛猎犬)are scary,” I’d say. We had this ongoing argument about what our ideal dog would be. But it made no difference—any dog would do, as long as it had a tail to wag and a friendly face.
One summer night, as we sat together beside the window, Josie saw something. “What’s that ” she said, pointing to a dark shadow on our driveway. The moon was up and everything looked either black or milky. At first all I saw was darkness. Then the shadow moved and I heard the sound of metal. Then the shadow flowed out onto the silvery driveway. With a little fright, we found ourselves stepping down to the front door. There in our yard stood a dog—a big, black dog with long, shaggy(蓬松的)hair.
Josie made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. “Here, boy!” I said. And the dog came to us slowly, taking a few steps forward, and then a step back, not sure whether to trust us. When close enough, it had a doggy smell that always made me think of dirt and grass and piles of leaves. “Don’t say ‘Here, boy’,” said Josie. “She’s a female.” Pulling back and looking, I said, “I wonder what her name is.” I felt for her collar while she sat patiently. I found no tags, but just a chain with a small old bell on it.
“I bet she’s hungry,” said Josie. “I can feel her ribs.” I ran my hand through her fur. The dog was so skinny that you could feel every bone, and her coat was twisted and full of dirt. If she belonged to someone, they weren’t taking good care of her.

“What can we give her ” Josie asked me. “Milk! I’ll get her some milk.” I went into the kitchen to fill one plate with milk and some raw eggs. The dog ate everything up, but instantly she finished, she ran into the shadows. “Don’t go!” Josie called loudly. But the dog was gone. “She’ll be back when hungry again,” I said. “Nobody is feeding her.” The following evening, as soon as we set the plate down, she appeared as if from nowhere. We named her ‘Shadow’ and gave her food again, but this time for some reason she wouldn’t eat it.
The dog did something completely unexpected. She grabbed the plate in her mouth and dragged it away into the bushes. When running there, we couldn’t find her. This went on for several days. However, one night, Shadow didn’t come. Josie and I tried to figure out what had happened. Another two days passed but we got no answer. We couldn’t wait to comb through the bushes until we found something unexpected. At our feet lay a litter of four puppies, squeaking and climbing around on top of each other. Our plates were there, and so was Shadow, cold and motionless. She must have saved all her food for her puppies.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge.
