Understand the meanings of appeal in the text.
T: Look at these two sentences from the article. Does appeal have the same meaning in the two situations Can you guess what does it mean in each sentence
T: In sentence a, appeal means to attract or interest somebody and it is used as a verb. In sentence b, appeal refers to a quality that makes somebody or something attractive or interesting.

T: Here are some common phrases related to description. We know we can say give a description of or issue a description of. What adjectives can be used before description For example, “Police issued a detailed description of the man.” What other adjectives can you think of to modify description

Word study: reflect
Understand the meanings of reflect in the text.
T: What does reflect mean in this sentence from the text It means to throw back light, heat, sound, etc. from a surface. Can you translate this sentence into English
T: Now let’s look at these two sentences in paragraph 5. In these two sentences, reflect means to show what something is like or the nature of something or somebody’s attitude or feeling. Can you translate this sentence into English
Learn other meanings and collocations of reflect.
T: I have two more sentences for you. What’s the meaning of reflect in each sentence In sentence a, reflect means to show the image of somebody or something on the surface of sth such as a mirror, water or glass. In sentence b, it means to think carefully and deeply about something. Different meanings have different collocations. We use be reflected in for the first meaning and reflect on/upon for the second meaning.
6. Word study: capable (be capable of)
Understand the meanings of capable in the text and in other situations.
T: Please look at the sentence from the text. “One who reads it is capable of seeing the beauty that was hidden from his eyes before.” That is to say, he or she has the ability to discover the hidden beauty. People who are capable of doing something means they have the ability or qualities necessary for doing something. Can you translate this sentence into English
T: Let’s look at another sentence. “She is a very capable teacher.” What does capable mean in this sentence Here it means having the ability to do things well.
7. Word study: contain
(1) Understand the meaning of contain in the text.
T: How can literature achieve permanence according to the article To achieve it, literature should contain two elements: universal interest and personal style. That is to say, the literature has to have both universal interest and personal style inside it to achieve permanence. Contain here means to have sth inside it or as part of it.
Learn other meanings of contain.
T: Contain has two other meanings: first, to keep your feelings under control and second, to prevent something harmful from spreading or getting worse. I have two examples for you. What’s the meaning of contain in each sentence
(3) Learn the difference between contain and include.
T: Contain and include seem quite similar to each other. Actually, they are different. If something contains something else, it has that thing inside it or as part of it. If one thing includes another, it has the second thing as one of its parts. Since you know their difference now, let’s practise using them. Please fill in the blanks.

Introduce what synonyms and antonyms are and how learning them can help with English learning.
T: Synonyms are words with the same or nearly the same meaning. Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. Learning synonyms and antonyms is very useful for English study. It can help remember the words you are trying to learn. It can also help you express yourself better by making your speech or writing richer and more colourful.
Find the synonyms and antonyms in the article and think of more.
T: In our last part, we’ve mentioned that significant and important have the similar meaning. So they are a pair of synonyms. Can you find more pairs of synonyms and antonyms in the article Can you think of more besides these Please list them in the table on page 47 of the textbook.

1. Then the man explained that the child heard nothing strange, and that the shell caught a
range of sounds too faint for human ears. (page 44, lines 4-5)
Here the phrase “a range of” means “a variety of things of a particular type”。
e.g.The company provides a full range of financial services.
这家公司提供全面的金融服务。
It also means “the limits between which something varies”。
e.g. The house is out of our price range (=We cannot afford the house).
这栋房子不在我们的价格范围内。（我们买不起这栋房子。）
The word “range” can also be used as a verb. The collocation “range from...to...”or
＂range between...and...”means “to vary between specified limits”。
e.g.Annual loan interest rates can range between 5 per cent and 6 per cent.

It can also mean “to arrange people or things in a particular position or order” as a
formal expression.
e.g.The Ministers were ranged around the table.部长们被依次安排在桌边就座。
2.What amazed the child was not a new world, but the unnoticed music of the old.(page
44,lines 5-6)
The sentence means that the child was not amazed by something new; instead,he noticed
the music of the old that had been unnoticed before. In this sentence,the structure of “not
…but..."is employed to express a contrast between information or ideas.
e.g. He was not affected most by his family but by one of his teachers at college.

3. The first step is to determine some of its significant qualities. (page 44, line 14)
The verb “determine” means “to discover the facts about something or to calculate
something exactly”。
e.g. We have to conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of the car crash.
我们不得不开展调查以确定这起车祸的确切原因。
The verb “determine" also means “to officially decide and/or arrange something".
e.g.A date for the final game has yet to be determined.

4.To achieve this, it should contain two elements: universal interest and personal style.

（1) The verb “contain” means “to have something inside or as a part”。
e.g. This kind of vegetable is beneficial to your health, as it contains a lot of vitamins.

The verb “contain” also means “to keep one's feeling under control”。
e.g.She couldn't contain herself after being treated that way.

“Contain something” can mean “to prevent something harmful from spreading or
getting worse”。
e.g.The government has successfully contained the epidemic.

（2) The adjective “universal” means “done by or involving all the people in the world
or in a particular group”。
e.g.Nowadays,Al has become a subject of universal interest.

It can also mean “being true or right at all times and in all places”。
e.g. It is a universal truth that opportunities are reserved for those who are prepared.

5.In summary, literature is the expression of life in forms of truth and beauty,the written
record of man's thoughts and feelings, and the history of the human soul. (page 45,
lines 31-32)
（1) The phrase “in summary” is usually used to introduce a brief statement of the most
important information in a piece of writing or speech.
e.g. In summary,I cannot thank you enough for helping me out.

（2)The phrase "in forms of.."or “in the form of.."means “in the way something is
or appears to be”。
e.g.They usually provide aid in forms of international cooperation.
