Step 1
The teacher shows students a picture of a book cover of the Harry Potter series and asks them whether they have read it. The teacher asks students to tell what type of books they belong to.
Step 2
Students work in pairs and list some other types of literature besides novels with the help of a mind map. Students tell the features of each type briefly.
Step 3
1. The teacher asks students to have a talk about the features of good PPT slides. Then students try to figure out how the audience can make use of PPT slides when they attend a lecture.
2. The teacher has students read the PPT slides on Page 50 made by the president of the school Book Club, Gary, and try to understand the features of each type. Students try to fill in the blanks about this part of knowledge.
3. The teacher asks students to tell which type of books they like best and why.
Step 4
1. The teacher has students guess which type of books are most popular in this school and watch the video of an introduction given by the librarian to get the answer. Students then finish B1 on Page 51.
2. Students watch the video again and finish B2 on Page 51. Meanwhile they should get the reason from the speech why plays are so popular among students.
3. The teacher has students clarify the librarian’s request: to recommend the types of books they should buy.
Step 5
Students work in groups and discuss why some types of books, such as biographies, and poetry collections are less popular.
Students exchange ideas of whether it is necessary to read such books.

1. Find some PPT slides you like and figure out what makes you like them..
2. Finish the workbook.

Step 1
The teacher asks students to recall what the Book Club members are expected to do.
Step 2
The teacher lets students work in pairs, talking about the types of books they think the school library should buy. They should also tell the reasons why they choose a particular type and provide a list of books of that type.
Students are expected to use the expressions listed in Part C. The teacher lists some expressions that can be used to express purposes, reasons and results.
Step 3
1. The teacher has students go through Planning your writing in Part D on Page 52 on how to write a formal letter to recommend books and discuss the format of the letter. The teacher provides students with help if necessary.
2. Students finish the letter individually.
3. Students check their writings from the aspects of punctuation, spelling, grammar, choice of words, style and structure. After that students exchange drafts with partners for peer review.
4. The teacher asks volunteers to share their writings with the whole class and the others give comments and provide suggestions.
Step 4 Homework
1. Polish up your writing based on others’ evaluations and hand it in tomorrow.

J. R. R. Tolkien

Step 3 Discussion
Many books have been made into films. In pairs, discuss whether you prefer reading books or watching films based on books. Use the example below to help you and pay attention to the expressions in bold.
A: Have you watched The Lord of the Rings films
B: pared to watching the films, I prefer the books. A film can never be as good as a book. When a book is made into a film, the storyline is often changed and sometimes even the best part of the book is taken out!
A: But books are much less exciting. I really like the music in The Lord of the Rings, and the special effects are so cool! And my favourite actor is in the films!
B: Well, that's true, but I prefer to use my imagination. Reading a book is like having a conversation with the author. It makes me think.
