That's true.Eric paints bright colors on paper, cuts out shapes, and then glues them onto another piece of paper. This method is called collage. In fact,it is what led Eric to his"ArtArt".
Eric's"ArtArt"includes large collages as well as paintings, photographs and even costumes. In all these works,he uses all kinds of colors-everything from purple to light green to orange. Now that's a lot of color!

(2021·福建·统考中考真题)If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness, can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.
Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character, that is, having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you’re self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.
Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence (信心). The World Health Organization says self - awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self - aware doesn’t mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.
How do you learn to be self-aware It’s a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with “What” instead of “Why” . So if you don’t understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you’re arguing.
Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don’t be afraid to dislike something—discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.
5.What’s one of the keys to becoming more self-aware
A.Being in high spirits. B.Discovering your weak points.
C.Having a taste for pleasant music. D.Learning to get along well with others.
In 2007, Barrington Irving became the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He was just 23 years old—and he built the plane himself. How did he achieve this
Irving's interest in flying started when he was 15. He was working in his parents' bookstore in Miami, Florida. One of the customers was a pilot, Gary Robinson. One day, Robinson asked Irving if he was interested in flying. Irving didn't think he was smart enough. But the next day, Robinson took Irving to an airport. He showed Irving inside the cockpit(驾驶舱) of a Boeing 777. That experience changed Irving's life.
Irving really wanted to fly, but flight school was expensive. To achieve his dream, he worked different jobs. He washed airplanes and cleaned swimming pools. At home, he practiced flying on a video game. In the end, he got enough money for flight school.
At flight school, Irving achieved his dream of learning how to fly. But he wasn't finished. Next, he planned to build his own plane and fly alone around the world.
Building the plane was difficult. Irving asked more than 50 companies for airplane parts. Most said no, but he persisted(顽强地坚持) in asking. Three years later, he had parts worth $300,000. Columbia, an airplane company, agreed to build a plane using the parts. Soon, his airplane was ready to fly.
On March 23, 2007, Irving began his round-the-world trip. After 97 days—with 145 hours in the air—he landed back in Miami. A cheering crowd of people was there to welcome him.
Irving saw many young people in the crowd, and this had a powerful effect(影响) on him. He wanted to use his experience to help other young people achieve their own dreams.
“Everyone told me what I couldn't do,”says Irving.“They said I was too young and that I didn't have enough money. But even if no one believes in your dream,”he says,“you have to pursue(追求) it.”
( )6. Why was Gary Robinson important in Irving's life
A. He got Irving interested in flying.
B. He sent Irving to a flight school.
C. He helped Irving build a plane.
D. He taught Irving how to fly.
If you've ever stayed up late and then got up early the next day, you know what it's like not to get enough sleep. It's a very uncomfortable feeling.
In fact, scientists have long believed that sleep is like food --if we don't get enough of it, we might get sick or even die. But now they are starting to wonder just how much sleep we need.Researchers from London recently did a study on fruit flies (果蝇).
They found that flies that slept for very short periods of time 一 about 72 minutes a day 一 still lived about as long as flies that slept for longer time.
One of the flies slept for just 4 minutes each day. This has led the researchers to wonder if sleep is less necessary than we thought before.
Humans are very different from fruit flies. Sleep is when our bodies do a lot of work, for example, repairing tissue(组织)and growing muscle (肌肉).Sleeping allows our bodies
to get a good rest.
But can we really die from not sleeping? No human has died so far from staying awake for too long. The world record for sleeplessness is held by Randy Gardner from the US, who stayed awake for 11 days and 24 minutes in 1964. However, Gardner did experience serious side effects (副作用).
Scientists have not yet found any animals that don't sleep at all.Even animals that only sleep for short periods are not completely sleepless. This suggests that a short sleep is necessary, even in short-sleeping animals, according to a German scientist.
7.What does the study on fruit flies show?______
A. Fruit flies sleep less than humans do.
B. Flies need 72 minutes of sleep every day.
C. Sleep is as necessary for animals as it is for humans.
D. Getting less sleep doesn't seem to influence how long flies live.

Everyone faces challenges in their life, but some are more important than others. Daniel Kish had serious problems with his eyes when he was born. And doctors took away both of his eyes before he was fourteen months old.
Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He started to make clicking(咔塔) sounds with his tongue舌头) to help him move around. Much like a bat(蝙幅), he now moves about using sonar(声呐). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle in traffic. He and his group, World Access for the Blind, teach others how to use sonar. In this interview with National Geographic, Kish explains how the process works.

When you click, what do you see in your mind
"Each click is like a camera flash. I make a 3D image of the things around me for hundreds of feet in every direction
What is it like riding a bike using sonar
“It's exciting and enjoyable but requires a lot of focus. I click up to two times per second,, much more than I usually do.”
Is it dangerous to move around the world in this way
"Much of the world lives in fear of things that we mostly imagine. I have a habit of climbing anything and everything, but I never broke a bone (骨头) as a kid.”
How challenging is it to teach people to use sonar
“Many students are surprised how quickly results come. Seeing isn't in the eyes, it' s in the mind.”

In your dreams, you may clearly see something or hear someone talking. But what about smells Can you ever remember smells from your dreams
A study published in 1986 looked at difference sentory(感官的) experiences in dreams. It found visual experience mainly controls one’s dream. It takes up about 85 percent, while auditory(听觉的) makes up 69 percent ,and smell only 7 percent.
But why Now scientists from the US have possible reasons based on what is known about the brain.
In our brain, there is a special part called the cerebral cortex(大脑皮层). It is ed to our feelings. As much as two thrids of the cerebral cortex works in vision. So vision appears often in dreams. Auditory is colsely tied to language is protected entirely in the cerebral cortex.
Smell on the other hand, has little to do with the cerrebral cortex. It connects directly into the memory and emotional systems. That is why a smell can bring back a memory.
Another possibility is that perhaps smell is not easily affected by our imagination. For example, close your eyes and imaginc your favorite dish. What do you get It is easy to think about what it looks like, but it is not as easy in imagine its smell.
Vision or anditory is a complex(复杂的) process inside the brain. But smell is a direct measurement of the chemicals in the air. There is less imagination involved in smell. Therefore, smell might be less influenced by the brain activity happening during dreaming.
It is similar to taste and touch. That is why you don't often have the experience of taste and touch in your dreams.
4.Which of the following is TRUE about the US scientists’ brain theory
A.Less than half of the cerebral cortex works in vision.
B.Auditory experience is not tied to language.
C.Smell has almost nothing to do with the cerebral cortex.
D.It’s difficult to imagine what things in your dreams look like.
Cancer is now the leading cause of death in wealthy countries. Researchers say cancer has replaced heart disease as the top killer in the industrial world.
If the trend continues, they predict cancer could become the leading cause of death worldwide later in this century. However, the news is not that deaths from cancer are increasing but that deaths from CVD(心血管疾病)are decreasing.
CVD is a group of medical conditions that include heart failure, heart attack and stroke. It remains the leading cause of death among middle-aged adults worldwide.
But when you only look at deaths in the industrial world - that is not the case. In those countries, the new report shows that cancer now kills two times as many people as CVD.
The findings were published in The Lancet, The research comes from a large, ongoing study called PURE. It is a project of the Population Health Research Institute of McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences in Canada.
The PURE researchers have been collecting information about people from over 20 high-, middle- and low-income countries. The data includes a person's medical history and individual behavior, such as physical activity and diet.
Salim Yusuf is a researcher on the PURE study and a professor of medicine at McMaster University. He also serves as head of the Population Health Research Institute. He explained the study's findings in a statement to the press.
“ The fact that deaths from cancer are now twice as frequent as deaths from CVD in high-income countries, ” Yusuf said,” shows a change in the main cause of death in middle-aged people. ” He added, “ As deaths from CVD decline(减少)in many countries because of prevention and treatment, cancer will likely become the leading cause of death globally in the future.”
5.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Cancer has become the leading cause of death around the world.
B.CVD is still the main cause of death among middle-aged adults.
C.Prevention and treatment have helped to make deaths from cancer decline.

In the town of Lampang in northern Thailand, there is an unusual group of musicians. They play many different kinds of music—from traditional Thai songs to music by
Beethoven. Both children and adults love this group. What makes them so popular Is it
their music Their looks Yes, it's both of these things, but it's also something else:they're elephants.
These musical elephants are from the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC)in Lampang. The TECC protects elephants. It teaches people to understand and care for these huge, but gentle, animals. And, like many zoos around the world, the TECC encourages elephants to paint.
Richard Lair works with the TECC. He knew that elephants hear better than they see.So he had an idea:if elephants are intelligent and they have good hearing, maybe they
can play music. To test his idea, Lair and a friend started the Thai Elephant Orchestra.
During a performance, the elephants play a variety of instruments, including the drums
and the xylophone. The animals also use their voices and trunks to make sounds.
But can elephants really make music properly Yes, says Lair. they’re very creative. Humans may encourage the animals to play instruments, but the elephants make their own songs;they don't just copy their trainers or other people. There are now CDs of the
group's music, which make money for the TECC. And the music these artists create is
pretty amazing.
8. What can be inferred(推断) from the passage the passage
A. Richard Lair started the Thai Elephant Orchestra by himself.

Eating is best when it's a social activity. Think of the meal a family enjoys in the evening when everyone's together after work or school, or the big get-togethers over food at Spring Festival. But now, in the age of the Internet and social media, anyone with an Internet connection can enjoy a social eating event.
Mukbang — a South Korean phrase meaning "eating broadcast" — is an unusual food craze(狂热) that's sweeping the country. This is a meal where only one person gets to eat, while many viewers watch live shows of hosts eating large quantities of food. They leave comments on the dishes the host is taking, and the host responds to them live.
So why have people taken to this unusual new food trend Jeff Yang, an Asian-American cultural critic, thinks that it's down to "the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled South Koreans". He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South Korea, where social eating is such a long tradition. However, Mukbang gives people the feeling that they are part of something larger, it seems.
Millions of people have trouble with food. Either they eat too much of it, or too little. Some said that the popularity of Mukbang helps people with these disorders. Those who always eat too much and put on weight can watch Mukbang stream to satisfy their appetite. And those who don't eat enough can build their appetite by watching delicious food being eaten.
Even though Mukbang is a Korean phenomenon, it's also taken off in the US. But unlike Koreans who sit down to enjoy noodles and kimchi (泡菜), Americans enjoy their own native dishes. This means that viewers of US Mukbang live shows will see locals stuffing themselves with hamburgers fries and ice cream.
10. What does the writer think of mukbang
A. It has two sides. B. It is quite
C. It wastes time. D. It is helpful

In the background, a young girl reads a rejection(拒绝) letter from a ballet school.“You have the wrong body for ballet,”it says,“and at thirteen, you are too old.”This was one of the most popular advertisements(广告) of 2014 and it described the American Ballet Theatre's principal(主要的) dancer Misty Copeland.
This was not a real letter. But Copeland said it was very similar to letters from her childhood. While many dancers start at the age of three, Copeland only began to study ballet in 1995 as a thirteen-year-old. People often told her that she was too old, or that she didn't have the perfect body type. Her family moved a lot, and it was sometimes difficult for her to attend[# ballet classes. But Copeland loved dancing and did not want to give up. She stayed with her ballet teacher during the week and spent time with her family only at the weekend. This was a difficult life, but she worked hard and won her first national competition when she was fourteen years old. 长途初2 Copeland joined the American Ballet Theatre in 2000 and performed in many ballets over the next few years. In 2007, she became a solo(单独的) performer, and in 2015 she became its principal dancer.
Copeland is now a dancer, author and Broadway performer. She also starred in the film A Ballerina's Tale. So what's next According to Copeland, anything is possible:“My career(职业) really is just now beginning.”

Part of Earth's beauty comes from its oceans. Ocean scientists study the chemical make-up of the ocean, weather patterns, the geography of the ocean floor, and many other areas. Their work is exciting, although sometimes dangerous. Using technology to do certain tasks helps. For example, robotic arms are used for very dangerous tasks.
One basic part of ocean study is understanding waves and how they work. Wind is the great maker of waves. The waves we know are mostly produced by winds blowing over the sea. They are directly connected with the wind speed and the time that wind lasts.
Sometimes ocean life can be seen in the wave. Living things seem to be staying within the wave, moving slowly inside it as if they were weightless. Besides the beauty of waves, scientists are interested in their technical ways. The diagram of waves shows how
scientists examine waves. Waves are measured (测量) from the top(crest) to the bottom(trough). This allows scientists to find out the h eight of a wave. They also measure waves from crest to crest to determine(测定) the length of a wave.
During serious storms, huge waves might cut a sea ship apart. Ships are at great risk of winding up as broken pieces after being hi t by the force of a huge wave. By understanding the ocean, scientists can prevent this breakup of ships by predicting when the water will be too dangerous for people and their ships. The study of waves and the ocean also allows scientists to make sure how certain beaches were formed. By studying the oceans, a great deal can be learned about the surface we live on.

Once there were many thousands of G our ma Desert(沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source(来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.
To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project(MEP) was started in2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching(偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,”said a member of MEP.
Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations(组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants, one of the wild life treasures in the world.

Many people say dolphins are intelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand
and learn things quickly. But are they as smart as humans or are they more like cats and dogs?
Like humans, every dolphin has its own "name".The name is a special whistle.
Dolphins "talk" to each other about a lot of things—such as their age, their feelings, and
finding food. They use a system of sounds and body languages to communicate.Understanding
dolphin conversation is not easy for humans. No one speaks the dolphin language yet,but some
scientists are trying to learn.
Dolphins are (3)social animals. They live in groups, and they often join others from different
groups to play games and have fun—just like people.Scientists believe playing together is
something only intelligent animals do. Dolphins and humans both make plans for getting things they want.In the seas of southern
Brazil for example, dolphins use an intelligent plan to get food. When there are fish near a
boat, dolphins signal the fishermen to put their nets in the water. This way,the men can catch
a lot of fish. Why do dolphins help the men? They get to eat some of the fish that escape from the nets.
9.The best title of the passage may be ______.
A.Something interesting about dolphins B.How dolphins communicate

Have you ever wanted to see the Great Wall of China, or win an Oscar for Best Director, or swim with dolphins(海豚) If so, you are not alone. We all have things we want to do or achieve. These are part of our “bucket lists”. A bucket is a list of things that someone wants to experience in his or her lifetimes. These things can be big or small. Have you ever thought about what is on your bucket list
Lindsay, 15, created her bucket list when she was 14. She has given her list serious thought. “I’ve always wanted to travel into space,” she says. “I don’t really want to be an astronaut. But I do want to go to space as a tourist. I want to see the Earth from above.” Other things on her list include being on TV, seeing her favorite band in concert, learning how to speak Portuguese(葡萄牙语), and living in a foreign country. “I’ve always wanted to live in Brazil. As part of my bucket list, I want to attend Carnival(狂欢节)in the capital of Brazil,” she says.
Jose, 16, recently created a list of things he wants to achieve. It changes sometimes he adds and takes away things because he wants to keep the number of the things at seven. One thing has stayed at number one, though: he wants to visit a movie set(影视基地). He would like to see the Harry Potter of The Hobbit movie sets. Other things on the list include being on TV, meeting his favorite sports star, living in a foreign country, skateboarding down a mountain, attending the World Cup, and backpacking across Europe. He would like to spend two months visiting Eastern Europe with his best friend Adam. “Maybe after I graduate from college,” says Jose.
Carrie, 14, also has a bucket list. She first created it when she was 12. She would like to live in a foreign country for at least two years. She also wants to learn as many foreign languages as possible. But the number one thing on her list is to see her favorite band in concert. She also wants to go on a trip and to visit a movie set. A. We should keep changing our bucket lists to meet our needs.
B. We must think about our bucket lists before they are created.

Here is an interesting question you can ask your friends: How are Antarctica (南极洲) and the Sahara alike Letthem guess before you give the answer: They are both deserts! You probably don't think of Antarctica as a desert. But like the Sahara, it has low rainfall a year. That makes it a desert. The north of Greenland is a desert, too. Antarctica and the north of Greenland are polar (极地的) deserts.
There are many different kinds of deserts. Deserts along an ocean coast are coastal deserts. Imagine a sandy, rocky desert picture with cactuses(仙人掌) along a blue sea. That's the Atacama Desert, a coastal desert in Chile, South America. The Atacama Desert is the desert that receives the least rainfall in the world! The rainfall there is quite low a year. Some places in Atacama don't even get a drop of rain for several years. Temperatures aren't bad, though. The long summers of coastal deserts are pleasant. The short winters are a little cold but bearable.
The deserts of Nevada and Utah are not as dry as the Atacama Desert. Temperatures in these places often change greatly between day and night. You might perspire at 38℃under a summer sun and then shake at 10℃under a cool night sky. When the temperature drops in the cool night, water in the air is collected as drops, which are important to plants and animals.
And then there are hot, dry deserts like the Sahara, the kind of desert that is well known to people.
12. What's the passage mainly about
A. How the desert comes into being. B. Different deserts around the world.
C. Why the weather is special in the desert. D. What we can see in the desert.
Stephen Fabes worked as a medical doctor in a hospital in London. He loved his friends, job and life in the city. However, he was also thirsty for an exciting journey. One day, he came up with the idea of traveling around the world and riding across six continents( 大陆). Hoping to experience and learn about the world in a personal way, he decided to cycle across the world to help treat sick people and raise money for charity(慈善).
In January 2010, Fabes waved goodbye to his family and friends outside St Thomas’ Hospital, where he worked and set off on his bicycle. It took him six years to complete the journey. He covered more than 85,000 kilometers, which was more than twice around the planet. He visited remote( 偏远的) hospitals along the way and cured(治愈) patients in 75countries. Fabes made all his long way by bicycle just because it allowed him to visit the remotest places where poor people did need his help. During his trip, he kept a travel blog to share his interesting stories with people from all over the world. His book " Signs of Life: To the Ends of the Earth with a Doctor" will be published by Profile in August 2020. It will tell people about his valuable experience.
According to Fabes, life on the road was exciting and eye-opening. He went through amazing mountains, deserts and salt flats on his bike. He not only enjoyed the wonderful views of different places, but also used his skills to volunteer at a lot of hospitals and charities. However, the trip wasn't always fun. In fact, sometimes it was really dangerous. But Fabes never thought of giving up.

In your dreams, you may clearly see something or hear someone talking. But what about smells Can you ever remember smells from your dreams
A study published in 1896 looked at different sensors experiences in dreams. It found that visual(视觉的)experience mainly controls one's dreams. It takes up about 85 percent, while auditory(听觉的)experience makes up 69 percent, and smell only 7 percent.
But why Scientists from the University of Illinois, US, have a theory based on what is known about the brain.
In our brain, there is a special part called the cerebral cortex(大脑皮层). It is linked to our feelings. As much as two-thirds of the cerebral cortex works in vision(视觉). So vision appears often in dreams. Auditory experience is closely tied to language, and language is processed entirely in the cerebral cortex.
Smell, on the other hand, has little to do with the cerebral cortex. It connects directly to the memory and emotional systems. That is why a smell can sometimes bring back a distant memory.
Another possibility is that perhaps smell is not easily affected by our imagination. For example, close your eyes and imagine your favorite dish. What do you get It is easy to think about what it looks like. But it is not as easy to imagine its smell.
The vision and auditory lenses are part of a complex process inside the brain. But smell is a direct measurement of chemicals in the air. There is less imagination involved in smell. Therefore, smell might be less influenced by the brain activity that happens while dreaming. It is similar to taste and touch. That is why you don't usually have the experience of taste and touch in your dreams.
15.What is the best title for the story
A.How does the cerebral cortex work.
B.Why can't you smell in your dreams.
