The Origin of Halloween
Halloween is said to originate from the Celtic festival(凯尔特节) called *Samhain(萨温节). It was celebrated at the end of the harvest season and people would light bonfires
(篝火) and don(穿上) costumes to scare off ghosts that were said to roam(漫游) the lands.
.
Some of these traditions were later incorporated(被纳入) into All Saints’ Day(万圣节), celebrated on Novermber 1. The evening before , October 31, was known as All Hallows’ Evening(also known as All Hallows’ Eve), which was then shortened(被缩短) to Halloween.
Customs of Halloween
As time progressed, this festival became more secular (世俗的:with no connection to religion) and tended to revolve around children’s activities like trick-or-treat.
Customs of Halloween
In the past, children used to dress up as characters that were associated with the supernatural(超自然的), like skeletons(骷髅), goblins(小妖精), witches(女巫), and warlocks(术士).
Nowadays, children (and adults) dress up as anyone they like, e.g. comic book heroes(漫画英雄), cartoon characters(卡通人物), television personalities(电视明星).
Here’s a video to help us have a better understanding of Halloween.
