There once was a knight (骑士) named Sir Ross who ruled over Scotland. He was handsome and brave and won many battles (战役). Too many people said that he was great. So he became arrogant.“I truly am the greatest man in Scotland,” he said to himself.
One day, Sir Ross left the castle (城堡) and went out riding by himself. It was dangerous for anyone to ride alone but he was so arrogant that he didn't care. He rode deep into a forest. Soon he got lost and couldn't find his way home. Then a farm woman appeared.

Sir Ross was angered by the idea that he couldn't do something. He took it from her, cut it open and ate some.“See, I can. Nobody tells Sir Ross what to do.” He then rode home.
The next morning, Sir Ross woke up to a terrible smell. It was like the fruit he had eaten the day before but ten times worse. He tried to run away from the smell but it followed him everywhere. And then he realized it was him that gave out such a smell.
From that day on, nobody could stand being in the same room as him. He was no longer the greatest man in Scotland, just the smelliest (最难闻的).

This past fall was really unforgettable for me. I was at a neighborhood pool party on a Friday afternoon. I live in Texas so it's warm — even in October. My friend and I went outside to look for a pair of swimming glasses and saw someone at the bottom of the pool. We thought it was one of our friends playing, but we quickly realized that it was a little boy who didn't know how to swim. I knew something was wrong right away.
We looked around, but the adults were talking far away in the backyard and there was no time to spare. I jumped in the pool, dove (潜) underwater, and came close to the little boy. I swam as hard as I could and pulled the little boy onto a step in the pool. As soon as I got him out of the water, my friend and I started shouting for help. Once the adults heard us, they ran over. The little boy wasn't breathing, which was really scary. One neighbor did CPR (心肺复苏) and someone else called 911. Soon the doctors came and took the little boy to the hospital.
Luckily, the little boy is doing great now. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get him out of the water quickly enough, but I did. I've been taking swimming lessons since I was three years old, and I'm thankful that I'm a strong swimmer.

A polar bear swam in the Thames River in London. How did that happen Susan Fletcher remembers wondering when she first read a history of the Royal Menagerie (皇家动物园) at the Tower of London.
Fletcher knew she wanted to write about that bear, but she also knew she would have to do a lot of research. The bear lived more than 750 years ago, during the medieval (中世纪的) period in Europe.
Fletcher loves digging around in the past, though. Most of her 12 books have been set in“times long ago and far away”. And most include animal characters, both real and imaginary. Journey of the Pale Bear took five years to research and write, because there were so few facts about the bear, its keeper and their travels. Fletcher imagined the keeper as a 12-year-old boy named Arthur. In the novel, Arthur and a polar bear travel from Norway to England in 1252.
Writing the book was also a journey for Fletcher. She started it in Portland, Oregon, but finished it about 2,000 miles away, when she married the historian in Texas who was helping with her research.
Like her character Arthur, Fletcher learned much about polar bears by spending time with them. Thanks to a special invitation from the curator (负责人) of the Oregon Zoo, Fletcher had a chance to closely watch two polar bears. Neville, Fletcher's dog, also helped Fletcher better understand how humans and animals might communicate without words. Being with Neville gave Fletcher ideas about how Arthur and the bear might relate to each other.
The most exciting part of the research, though, was a visit to the Tower of London. There Fletcher saw the Thames River, where the real bear swam and caught fish.

Everyone may have the exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing to us. If we have proper stress, we can think actively and work harder. Besides, it can remind us to review our lessons in time to remember them. So we can pass the exams easily.
