①China has its own special forms of traditional art. They all stand for Chinese appreciation of beauty and show the wisdom and craftsmanship(技艺).
②Three kinds of lanterns have been part of Chinese lantern culture for centuries: Palace lantern(宫灯),Gauze lantern(纱灯)and Shadow-picture lantern(走马灯).When making palace lanterns, fine wood and silk are used. These lanterns are not only widely used as lights but also as decorations. Less expensive bamboo and red gauze

are used to cover Gauze lanterns. Red lanterns are symbols of happiness in China, so they are hung everywhere on important festivals. There are two layers (层)of covers in Shadow-picture lanterns. People draw pictures on the inside layer. When the candle is lighted, the heat causes a paper wheel inside to turn around, so that moving pictures appear on the outside cover.
③Shadow puppetry(皮影戏)started during the Western
Han dynasty. The puppets are usually made from leather or paper.
Nowadays, in order to interest young people, new stories are
connected with the traditional form of storytelling. For example, in a recent show based on the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West, Baigujing(白骨精)dances to a Korean pop song. Popular
Chinese cartoon characters, together with the modern elements, are the secret in keeping the old art young, but its traditions and the basic of the art are still well protected.
④Toys are an important part of traditional folk art. One of the most popular toys in China which has a pleasant sound is the bird whistle usually made of clay. These bird whistles have something in common: they all have a straight tail, a hole on the tail and a hole on the head. If you put water into the whistle from the hole on the head and gently blow the whistle, it will give a sweet sound similar to bird singing.
