So the text is a poem!
What do you know about poems
Poem is a type of writing.
Most poems are written in lines(行).
A group of lines in a poem is called a stanza(诗节).
Stanzas separate ideas in a poem. They act like paragraphs.
While-reading
Watch the video and read the poem. Try to perceive what the writer wants to express through the poem.
From the poem, we can perceive the writer’s __________
__________________ to his/her mom.
love and appreciations
Read the poem quickly and figure out how many stages of life the writer mentions in the poem.
There are four stages mentioned.
So we can divide the poem into four stanzas.
a baby and small kid
a child
a teenager
an adult
Then match each stanza with the correct main idea.
Stanza 1
Stanza 2&3
Stanza 4
enjoy mom’s love
understand mom’s love
misunderstand mom’s love
Now read each stanza carefully and answer the following questions.
When I was a tiny baby crying all night, my mom sang to me and stayed by my side.
When I was tired and hungry, she gave me food and warm arms to sleep in.
When I was two running through the field, she made sure I was safe and kept me from danger.
When I fell and hurt myself, she gave me a hug and lifted me up.
Stanza 1
What did the mom do when the writer was a baby and a small child
When the writer was a baby and a small child, the mom did these:
sang to him and stayed by his side when he cried
gave him food and warm arms to sleep in when he was tired and hungry
kept him safe when he was running through the field
hugged him and lifted him up when he fell
Can you guess the writer’s feelings and reaction to mom’s love
at the stage
When the writer was a baby and a small child, he must enjoy mom’s love very much and felt happy and satisfied.
Stanza 2&3
When I was seven coughing badly, she said no ice-cream for me.
But I talked back loudly, “I should be allowed to eat some! Give it to me now!”
When I was nine watching scary movies, she said it'd give me awful dreams.
But I shouted back angrily, “I should be allowed to watch it! I'm not a baby!”
When I was a teen going out with friends, she said, “Please be back by ten! ”
But I talked back again—“I should not be told what to do!
I'm seventeen now!”
When What did the writer want to do/ was the writer doing What did mom do or say to the writer What’s the writer’s attitude
(shout back/talk back)
seven
nine
seventeen
coughing badly/
want ice-cream
no ice-cream
should be allowed to eat; give it to me now
watching scary movies
it’d give me awful dreams
should be allowed to watch it; I’m not a baby.
going out with friends
be back by ten
should not be told what to do;I’m seventeen now.
Why do you think the writer talked back to his mom when he was seven and nine years old
He felt that he was growing up and he did not want to be treated like a small child anymore.
How did the writer feel when he was a teenager and his mom said “Please be back by ten”
He was upset because he felt that he was old enough to be independent and should not be told what to do.
Stanza 4
Now I'm an adult, thinking back to those times.
I coughed for days after eating that ice-cream
And had scary dreams after watching that film.
I was late for school from staying out past ten.
I regret talking back, not listening to Mom.
Mom knows best, and for me she wanted only the best!
What did the writer regret doing Why
He regretted talking back to mom, not listening to mom.
Because he realized he was wrong and mom was right.
After reading the whole poem, how do you think the writer feels about his mom
He loves his mom and is thankful for what she has done for him.
Group Work
