2. reflect on how rules should be changed to be better;
3. consolidate the usage of passive voice with modal verbs
through writing practice.
Watch the video and figure out what rules are mentioned in the video.
What do you think of these rules Reasonable or unreasonable
In Germany, you are not allowed to stop on the motorway unless you have an accident or your car breaks down. If your petrol tank is empty, it’s your own fault. And you will have to pay a fine.
In Greece, tourists are not allowed to wear high heeled shoes when visiting historic sites .
In Singapore, you are not allowed to chew gum in public. If you do and you spit your gum out onto the street, you could pay up to 1000 dollars.

I would like to ___________________________________.
Could I ___________ if I __________________________
A Sample Style
Dear Diary,
I do not agree with the rule that I must be home for dinner every day. This is because the rule affects my social life. It takes away opportunities for me to spend time with my friends. As a result, my life is quite boring sometimes. I think I should be allowed to have dinner with my friends once in a while.
For example, I would like to hang out with my classmates after dinner on some Fridays. I hope my parents will allow me to do this if I promise not to stay out too late and if there is no important family activity on those days.
How to make home rules
Call a family meeting to brainstorm some rules.
When you're making home rules, it's important to make sure everyone is on board. Sit down with all the family members. Explain that you want to come up with a few home rules for all the family members to follow. Have a conversation about which rules you all think
are the most important, and how you plan to carry out your rules.
Write down your list of rules using clear, simple language.
Once you've come up with a few basic rules, write them down. This will help everyone remember what they are. Keep your language clear and simple so that the rules are easy for the whole family to understand.
Supplementary reading
·For example, you might write something like, “All the homework must be finished for the day before playing video games.”
·Avoid vague language, like “behave yourself” or “be good”. Set specific, clear rules so that all the family members can understand exactly what they are expected to do.
Review the rules after some time and change them if they aren't working.
Every few months, sit down with any other adult in the household and talk to them about how well the rules are working. If you have trouble enforcing a certain rule, brainstorm some possible solutions. Try to change rules to meet the teenagers’ changing needs. For example:
·You might need to change the consequences(后果)for not following a certain rule, or make sure that everyone is following the rules consistently(一以贯之地).
·Think of proper consequence for breaking family rules.
Here is an example.
Family rule Consequence
Bad school behavior at school No pocket money for a week
Breaking curfew once No playing outside for a week
Poor grades Plus 30-minute study on certain subject
Dirty words More housework
